Does the double-rejection hurt the Knicks FA options next summer?

*First post, Hi All*

Now that everyone we have approached has rejected the Knicks as if we were the ugly, nerdy guy at the school dance, will it have any carryover effect on our appeal to a marquee FA next summer?

Seems to me that stardom in the City, expanded marketing opportunities in the largest market, and a chance to bring competitiveness back to NY basketball has lost some of it's allure

Or is it just that Kidd and Hill are in their last deal and don't figure they will get to enjoy the renessaince of NY basketball as it would happen after they're gone.

What do you think?

Welcome.

I'm beginning to think that this is the case. That nobody will sign here next summer. Why? We've been owned by 2 old men. I can't imagine any prime all-star player seriously considering New York at all. At all. The Knicks have been destroyed by Isiah. It will take years to rebuild their name and credibility.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

Naw, not time to panic yet. Hill and Kidd are washed up and signing those two wouldnt have made any significant difference in wins and losses and whether a Lebron would sign in the future. They are both old and have different priorities.

But if Walsh doesnt put us in a better position roster wise by this time next year, then yeah this situation could repeat itself in 2010. Time to put the hard hat on and get to work.

Money speaks volumes. Hedo took a few more million from Toronto vs. Portland. Sorry, Toronto won how many games last year?

We are not getting a top tier talent in 2010 through FA.

MAYBE free-agent options get hurt but we're still going to be extremely far under the cap and can absorb any contract in a dump trade.

the Knicks have always been a second-tier franchise, this is nothing new. The Knicks never had any allure. Outside of a over-achieving stretch in the 90s, when the Knicks couldn't draw a big name either, this team has largely been a heap of garbage.

lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

You big babies. Years of Layden, years of Thomas and so far Walsh has not shown results in terms of wins. It's going to take a while for NY to become a destination of choice. Take a deep breath and realize the reality. This is where years of mismanagement has gotten us.

knicks aren't even re-signing their own players (in nate/lee) - agents and players take note of that...

Notwithstanding our lack of any recent championships, I thought the Ewing era (i.e., early to mid '90s) was incredibly fun to watch, even though we always got pwned by Jordan's Bulls or other elite teams. It was VERY entertaining. Starks' dunk is one of the greatest highlights of all time.

I am seeking to get us into contention, not necessarily be the "Yankees of basketball". And the points I mentioned ought to lure top tier FAs (from a purely $$ perspective).

I don't care if we add any significant talent this summer (fingers will remain crossed for miracle Rubio deal). I would like to see N8 and JJ packaged and moved asap; and Lee signed to a fair but modest 3+1 deal with the Knicks. Maybe bring in a defensive oriented assistant coach to do the prep work MDA seems averse to (i.e., defense).

Then if we're 40+ wins next year and showing greater potential in our young core, I think we will have good things to post about next July.

You post a picture of a lady in the Alba thread (see off-topic forum) and then it counts towards your Alba count. I have posted several such pictures of pretty ladies.

I think one of the problems in NYC is fans and media. It's tuff out there.
Decent people, and players are not an exception to this, want peace of mind for comparable money.
NY is a place for head cases, washed up veterans (if they cannot hookup with Florida teams), and players with no choice.

Kidd wants to win more than the money. He got both. Why come here to be the leader at less than market prices.

Hill stays with a better team in Phx. He is one ankle twist away from retirement and his 5.8 contract for one year was a great deal, but if you have to uproot your family and kids into a differnt school then its kind of a lock. They stay.

We are looking for some vet leadership to replace what may be trade fodder.

We are rebuilding. Be patient.

Kidd and Hill really stood to gain little by playing here at the twilight of their career.

The taunts and jeers can resume. New York still has Patrick Ewing to kick around. Ewing, an 11-time All-Star who has led his team to the playoffs 13 times, is arguably the greatest player in Knicks history and one of the best centers of all time. He is also called a choke artist, a bum who can't win the big one, a churlish, selfish millionaire who won't sign autographs for sick children. Good riddance, some said before the trade that would have sent him to Seattle last week was nixed.

I doubt highly players and agents alike have forgotten Ewings last days as of yet.

Sports is all cyclical. Free agents will be happy to sign with us at a later date. Right now there are better options. Unfortunately it's been so long since we have even been in the free agent competing game that this is getting blown out of proportion. Years ago we signed Allan Houston adn Chris Childs. One of the best PG's of that era(Tim Hardaway) holds a grudge against us to this day because we did not sign him. Nothing has changed in NY. NY has become a tougher place to play. The media and the fans are still the same as they were back when we got Allan and Chris. What's different is that we just went through years of ineptitude. Years of our GM dragging our name through the mud or being a top 10 list on Letterman and a joke for every comedian in the country. You guys want to believe that it's easy to recover from that. But as a person that has built a program before I can tell you it is not.

We are doing things right. We got rid of all the malcontents and guys that helped to drag our name through the mud. We are replacing them with youth or attempting to replace them with quality, CLASSY VETS. We will struggle to do this. But over time it will get better and eventually free agents will want to come here just like they seem to want to come to every successful NY team. Don't be surprised if this takes a while. The only way to speed it up is getting lucky in 2010/2011 free agent pools. If not, we are going to have to continue to tear it down while we lose games. There is no other way.

Yeah, I remember co-workers who were saying those things about Ewing and I was just shocked. The still current treatment of Ewing by the organization speaks volume too.

the "allure" is associated with winning. Nothing more nothing less. Winning teams with stars attract other players. Its always been that way.
