Ariza

Trevor Ariza has made a verbal commitment to sign with the Houston Rockets, according to sources close to the process.

The 6-foot-8 Ariza averaged 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists for the Lakers last season, which ended with the NBA championship.

With at least five teams pursuing Ariza, the Lakers appeared unwilling to pay him more than the $5.6 million mid-level exception.

You never know how this player flip/flop will work out. Ariza might be the better player for LA to have- especially in the long run, but even short term- you have to see how Artest works himself into the Laker's system and how he deals with the role Jackson gives him.

On paper it may work, but...

The Lakes are a win now team, and Artest is miles ahead of Ariza so they gotta make the move. But I agree with the sentiment, because I saw the Yankees grab so many rotisserie stars who looked great on paper after their championship years, but didnt fit the team. Artest is volatile as hell, could backfire.

I don't like this swap for LA. This could be a chemistry breaker. He's not a % shooter yet he takes a large volume of shots. He's wild, unpredictable with very questionable character. They had a good thing going with Ariza--maybe paying him an extra mm and adding the extra year--i.e 6 years 39.5mm with an opt out for both sides after 4 years[something like that wouldve been smarter] Trevor is kind of a blend in player who makes big plays in a team concept. He's not going to disrupt balance and he plays both sides of the ball with 110% energy and efficiency. Dealing with a Dennis Rodman is one thing because Dennis knew his role--I will have to see what type of role Ron Artest plays because it's kind of unknown and inevitable could be quite disruptive both on and off the court

If Jackson isn't back this could blow up on them. I remember reading that Isiah Thomas was afraid of Artest and the out of control rage he displayed. It was the only time I ever remember reading that Isiah was afraid of anything.

Ron could be Kobes protecter and enjoy the role.

Also, Kobe is a darn good defender who takes pride in it, as does Ron. They could enjoy shutting down other players!

I agree with Reezy being a good thing. I don't understand the comments from "not respecting him and it was not about money". It is said he signed for less in Houstan than LA but felt disrespected!

What do they do with Odom?

THey are intersted in Nate? They can have Al Harrington also!

he signed less than toronto, not la:
"We had a substantially larger offer above the mid-level from Toronto," Lee said. "Trevor decided to go to Houston. I told Mitch (Kupchak, the Lakers' general manager) that it was never about the money; it was about respect." NBA.com

Ariza played himself. He tried to play tough guy and demand a big contract from the Lakers. While Ariza was trying to play "Mr. Payday" the Lakers signed Artest. lol So the end result is Ariza did not get the money he wanted and had to sign in Houston for the same money the Lakers would have gave him. The only difference is Ariza is now on a Houston Rockets team that might win about 20 games while the Lakers are on their way for another title. Ariza's agent must have had Ariza smoking that championship pipe a little too long.
