Donnie Walsh says he will consider giving more than a one-year deal to a free agent, following a report that he plans to do that with Jason Kidd.

ESPN.com, citing sources close to the process, reported Thursday that the Knicks would offer a three-year deal to the point guard. The Knicks hosted Kidd and his agent Wednesday on the first day of free agency and are hoping he'll leave Dallas to come to New York.

The midlevel exception is $5.6 million for the first year, and Walsh said last week he wouldn't give a multiyear deal to a free agent unless he could move another contract off his payroll. The Knicks want to be major players in free agency next summer, but still have about $18 million committed to Eddy Curry and Jared Jeffries in the 2010-11 season.

Walsh backed away from that a bit Friday.

"I have a little leeway which will leave me in good position for next year," he wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press. "I know what it is but do not talk much about it."

I'm excited...I just want the Knicks to get better...the Power is shifting and I just want the Knicks to be compeditive with the change.

Even if the Knicks don't get Lebron...the Knicks should be able to get somebody...here's hoping some of the guys alreay on the team step up to the point the Knicks don't need to rely too heavily on free agency right now.

So will Knicks fans be happy if you sign Jason Kidd for three years?

No. By that time Kidd will be like 40 years old throw alley-oop jumpshots to Herb Williams in practice.

When Kidd is 40 he'll be an expiring deal so I don't care.

If Kidd gets sign for 2 years and at a good price I would not mind him being hear. I just hope it is not the same amount of money the Mavs are offering him.

Have to wait for the 3rd years to really give you an answer. With the addition of some shot blockers it is easier to deal with his defensive limitations.

It would be nice if we had a young franchise type PG for him to tutor, though.

Walsh is being mysterious. He does have alot of expirings that he could package with Jeffries or Curry and possibly take back a lesser contract that went beyond 2010 as part of that deal. Up to this point everything has been on hold for 2010. I don't think he would jeopardize that for a 36 year old Jason Kidd so there must be something to his leeway statement. Also, does anyone remember how many years ago Kidd had micro fracture surgery on his knee? I know he came right back the next year and played.

The leeway thing intrigues me......... Walsh is a man always on the hush and for him to say that something is up!!

But what?

Must be clearing space though if he is offering Kidd 3 yrs which now seems official!!

I think that clearing more space was in the plan regardless...Knicks need a point guard...Kidd hasn't shown signs that he is done. Yeah he lost a step but he lost a step and he's still like the 5th best point guard in the league....he's still the smartest point guard in the league next to Nash. He's not gonna go from this level to Duhon level over night....

All this and I don't even like Kidd as a person....lol

My guess is Walsh has a JJ trade in his back pocket.

Kidd would be great for the development of guys like Chandler, Gallo, Hill maybe even Douglas as well. If Douglas comes in wanting to be true PG, maybe he can become a Billups.

maybe washington can use him again. They are clearly "all in" for the next couple of years and they could use his defensive versitility. They have plenty of offensive firepower. I remember an article saying they were interested in him at the deadline but bc they were so awful last year maybe they didnt want/need him. But now it would make a lotta of sense. I wish we could flip him for Mike James who has an expiring contract and makes about the same money.

Washington has a ton of guards and are thin up front:
-Arenas, Crittenton, N Young, Stevenson, Foye, Miller(if considered at the 2 spot)

Get it done, Donnie!!!
