Already it seems a thousand articles have been written about the intricate dance unfolding between Ricky Rubio and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

One thing that really impresses me: Minnesota GM David Kahn has skillfully removed the Rubio camp's biggest threat. In any normal situation they would have said give us what we want or we'll stay in Europe. But before the music even really started, right there on draft night, Kahn was assuring everyone that Rubio might stay in Europe and that's just fine. The Timberwolves, he said, are more than willing to wait.

That sends the message to everyone that the Timberwolves are ready for good offers, but not bad ones.

The Rubio camp does still have a big hammer, though, and it's one that has almost never been used.

Rubio can sit out a year, and re-enter next year's draft.

The way the collective bargaining agreement works, the Timberwolves hold Rubio's NBA rights so long as they make him an offer, and he plays professional ball in some FIBA-sanctioned league, which is just about all of the leagues he'd consider playing in.

But if he doesn't play professionally anywhere, then he can be right back in next year's draft.

You can only do this once -- no one can be drafted more than twice.

Clearly, this is an illogical move. To leave his Spanish team, he'd still have a buyout, only now coupled with almost no income at all. (Barnstorming Nike tour, anyone?)

But he could certainly get himself some elite basketball training, maybe a year of being a college student, followed by a career with a team more to his liking. It might at least be worth threatening that, as a way to imbue the Timberwolves with some urgency.

You know what would be just hilarious, though? If Rubio actually did sit out the year, and somehow or another the Timberwolves drafted him again.

lol - hopefully the lockout puts an end to all this foolishness.

my proposal, if you get drafted into the nba and refuse to sign with the team, you are banned from the nba for 5 years.

never will happen. Stern is not going to discourage players from coming to the NBA.

Timberwolves are turning into a joke...this Rubio thing is a complete embarrassment.

Its clear Rubio isnt trying to play in Minnesota, so instead of doing the prudent thing and bringing in a Curry or a Hill, they want to try and prove a point by drafting Rubio and another a point guard. To make matters worse, they have developed this hard edged posture like they are so tough and have this master plan.

Kahn is going the drama route and is trying to make a name for himself rather than doing the right thing for the organization. He's not fooling anybody, Rubio is not coming and his bargaining power is evaporating by the second. No GM is coming in with a Lebron for Rubio offer; Chandler and the #8 was as good as it was going to get. Mchale must still be pulling the strings, because this is absurd.

I totally agree with you. Knicks look like they are in the market for a PG and are looking at JKidd, Sessions. I really want the Knicks to get Rubio here a trade has to be in the works. Send Chandler, Douglass and Mobley's contract the Wolves way and get a deal done.

Kahn is a moron. Chandler is a young and promising player he should've pulled the trigger on, and he still could've had his man Flynn at #8.

Kahn did a miserable job with the draft.

I could be wrong but I thought that was were they were headed. I am not sure about the years but there is suppose to be a ban period on players who sit out. I remember reading that in the SI article last year about the new CBA.

Yeah...but Kahn wont do that, because he is having too much fun sticking his chest out at Rubio and staying in the headlines.

The Timberwolves knew damn well Rubio wasnt going to set foot inside Minnesota unless he was playing for the visiting team. Fair? Not really, but its reality. Now any reasonable GM is going to know that and either draft somebody else, or take a strong offer for the rights to pick him.

So instead of the Timberwolves going into the SL with their draft picks ready to go, or having a good young player like Chandler on their roster, they are dealing with this nonsense that is turning more pathetic as each day passes. Unreal

i can't blame Kahn for takin Rubio when he did... if i were him i would've done the same thing... he's a valuable trade chip & was the BPA on the board at the time, u have to take him regardless if u think u can get him to sign a contract or not... what makes me scratch my head is why he took Flynn where he did... if he was so high on Flynn he could have easily traded down w/a team like NY & gotten someone like Chandler in the process while taking their man Flynn down at #8... NY would have taken Curry in that scenario in all likelihood... this is what makes me think he already has some kind of under the table deal worked out w/Walsh already for Rubio to end up in NY... it doesn't make any sense otherwise for him to have taken Flynn at #6 when he could have just traded down & gotten him later while picking up another nice asset.

This is odd, I think this guy stole this from a poster on realgm who goes by the name of duhon-duhon. I rememember the other day when he posted this....Actually the poster made this same post, word for word, last week...!

You have to have a discernible plan in place or else an asset can turn into a liability real quick, and I think that is what has happened here. Rubio is looking like damaged goods right now. What GM is going to give him full value when there is this complete fiasco going on?

Kahn needed to have a deal on draft day or at least a contingent one. But ol' boy seems content to try to play chicken with a 19 year old --- hence the drafting of Flynn which looks like Kahn's attempt to try to intimidate Rubio into signing. Bush league.

i don't think anyone thought Rubio was gonna fall to #5... i don't think Kahn made the trade to move up to #5 w/the thought of taking Rubio in mind... OKL made the idiotic move of the draft by taking Harden so high, which threw everyone else off kilter.

Kahn is not a moron. Yet.

This can play on for another 10 days before it gets silly.

He can end up with a sign and trade for David Lee. Al Jeff, Love and Lee are all differnt type bigs so there is nothing redundant.

Can't Kall Kahn a Kunt yet. He will come out of this with a good deal and can simply say he drafted Ruby for the asset and he got more for the 5 because of it.

I feel like the only one that really values Chandler. I am not looking to move him for any old PG. I think the guy can really be a breakout player. He just needs more time. Whats he? 21? 22?

I love Rubio for the Knicks but I see Chandler as the center piece of any trade. He played what? One year at Depaul as a role player? He's a guy thats really going to fill out a stat sheet for many many years in this league and possibly be an all star type player

Jeffries, Chandlers and cash for Cardinal and the rights to Rubio.

Exactly, we would have probably given up Chandler for a chance to draft curry and Minny could have gotten Flynn at 8 or Jennings. Taking them both in a row was the height of stupidity.
