Dallas Mavericks' Kidd expected to have plenty of suitors

EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News

There will be a new bad guy to deal with when the Mavericks open their pursuit of re-signing Jason Kidd on Wednesday.

The New York Knicks are expected to join the ranks of serious competitors for Kidd's services for two reasons.

First, it is widely known that Kidd has an affinity for New York. He still has a home there and enjoys the area. He played

for New Jersey for 6 ½ seasons before being traded to Dallas in 2008.

Secondly, the Knicks are going to start stockpiling assets to help lure LeBron James next summer. Having Kidd as their point

guard, even at age 37 in 2010, would be a nice selling point.

Wednesday is when teams officially can begin talking to free agents, and Kidd is expected to get overtures from several

teams: Cleveland, Portland, Boston, New York and perhaps the Lakers.

All of those teams except for Portland are stymied by the salary cap. The Knicks can only offer their mid-level exception,

expected to be between $5 million and $6 million. Kidd earned $21 million last season.

The Mavericks can pay him any amount up to the league maximum. The only way the Knicks can pay him more than the mid-level

exception is through a sign-and-trade.

He's finished.

He's not even worth a 1 year deal because he just breaks up any continuity we had going. No thanks.

I'm not enthusiastic. His productivity has been going down each season. The most I'd think about offering is a one year deal. He really belongs on a winner. He'd be a perfect fit on the Lakers.

Exactly. The only way I would want him here is with an understanding that he will only play 10 minutes a game and a strict mandate to keep his mouth shut and act like a regular player.

I don't even see how a 1 year deal with Kidd helps us. We already have Duhon and whether or not Duhon is here beyond 2010 the fact is he was here last year and it's imperative, with the thought of developing Chandler and Gallo and maybe retaining Lee and/or Nate, that the same offense be run by the same player to keep some continuity intact. If we grab Kidd and put Duhon on the back burner what's the value of that? Now Chandler/Gallo/Lee/Nate have to learn how to play with Kidd instead of already knowing how Duhon plays and just being able to work on their games some more during this year.

Kidd as a 10 minute backup is USELESS to us and to him. He needs to go to the Spurs or Lakers or Celtics or Magic or Cavs or Nuggets and leave us alone. Same goes for guys like Rasheed if you will.

^exactly. 10 minutes is useless for both parties, but any more 10 minutes and we suffer. so no go, no way. DEAL BREAKER.

Kidd is in decline but he is declining from one of the best ever to very good....the dude can still play with the best and he is still the best in the open floor and pure decision making.

I don't want him cuz he's a douche but just because its possible he could play here doesn't mean he is all of a sudden the worst point guard in the league....He will be 60years old doing promo spots for the league and still be better tnan Duhon is right now

THIS WOULD BE A MISTAKE! Overpaying for a Big Name PG with a declining game.... Go after Ramon Sessions or Ronnie Price for part of the MLE

Mistake it would be. If they do something as silly as that then, to me, that says that the team isn't about winning but just about flashy lights and fancy sneakers and selling tickets.

I am not opposed to having Kidd as long as we dont overpay for him. If he takes teh LLE fine, otherwise find somewhere else to go. I would much rather have Nash though.

Don't mistake it- while Kidd is now a shell of what he was he is still better than Duhon. He'd probably have a mini-renassaince playing here. I would take him on a 1 yr contract if no other options at PG materialized.

What are you talking about dude? lol....seriously.

If they get Kidd that means they are dead serious in trying to make things work on the court. I dunno where selling sneakers comes from, lol....

I don't even wanna see Duhon in uniform next year...I hope Donnie packeges him somewhere too.

I'm trying to break it down like-- Kidd hurts the long term, but he helps sell fancy sneakers and tickets in the short term, and he can't even play well in the short term, he is a saboteur! So you gotta just think with the future in mind, not the Kidd, that's what I would say to DW.

Are we talking about the same Jason Kidd? The one who basically averaged a double double with 6 rebounds and 2 steals? He's not the same player he used to be but it would be crazy not to take him for a small contract (like half the MLE or the full LLE). He could help the team and/or be a good trade asset.

How does Kidd hurt the long term? What PG are we developing?

In 30 minutes a game, he can probably continue to average the 9 pts & 8 assists he did last year in 35.

And - as an added benefit, I'm sure Kidd in this system helps inflate other players numbers (think Curry), which might help with trades & the recruitment effort in 2010.

Kidd on a short contract is a no lose situation.

This happens every year. Players threaten their current team by saying they will take the MLE from NY and it never happens. The Mavs will pay him 7 to 8 million a year for 2 or 3 years and that will be it.

If cubans smart he,ll package howard with kidd in s n t. I also prefer nash but quite frankly any pg is going to shine with mda, kidds no exception, and his experience help even more.
