"If it's up to the team, he'll have a positive effect," the 75-year-old NBA legend told The Post yesterday at the NBA Store in midtown. "But you don't know how much he's been damaged psychologically playing here." "Here" of course, is with the Knicks, where his rocky tenure came to a disastrous end when it became clear that coach Mike D'Antoni had no intention of playing him and team president Donnie Walsh long refused to buy him out of his $21 million contract. When asked if he thought the point guard indeed had been "damaged psychologically" by the Knicks, Russell said: "He may have been. No matter how strong you are, that kind of stuff that went on this season was so ridiculous." After suiting up in the preseason, Marbury was banished to the bench and later told to stay away from the team before finally being bought out and signing with the Celtics on Feb. 27. "I think what the Knicks did to him, having the whole thing play out in the papers [was wrong]," said Russell.

Why do people keep overlooking that Marbury had been in decline for a couple seasons already prior to this year. He lacks the explosiveness that once made him a special player and he can no longer get to the basket at will.

The Knicks under Layden and Isiah were a seriously dysfunctional franchise. The Knicks and Marbury probably did each damage each other.

thats why I'm glad Walsh runs the show. Instead of a million stories about how Gallo is a stiff back butter soft euro reminiscent of Weiss, we get fluff pieces about how he can finally sleep thru the night that tip toe around them not knowing when he'll return the court.

regardless of what folks feel about steph and his affect on the knicks (fans, especially), russell may be right.

he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder this year, which is pretty serious, as that espn report had indicated.x

a professional mental health worker would not diagnose someone with something like that unless they met the proper criteria.

Russell STFU!! Since when is russell doing a head doctor?? does he have a degree?? I wish when the NBA needs to stir up some crap they look in the mirror and think about the refs favoring certain players(kobe and his elbow) and call it equal. Its getting frustratng thinking im gonna sit and watch a good game and the refs dont get it right.

key question is: will boston resign Marbury?

I suspect the answer is NO!
