2011 First Round Pick (cannot be traded prior to the draft—consecutive years rule)
2011 Second Round Pick
2012 1st Round Pick
2012 Second Round Pick

Offseason Goals:
(i) Make the Playoffs in 2009-10, meaning that the intent is not to overhaul the team throughout the year. The 8 man rotation should be constructed by August.
(ii) Attempt to eliminate one or both of the contracts of Curry and Jeffries to reduce 2010 salary.
(iii) Retain/Create salary cap flexibility to have two max players by the 2010 offseason. This means you cannot add new salary for 2010 unless you subtract players already under contract for 2010.
(iv) Only add salary for 2010-11 if the player is a legitimate 8-man rotation player on a team contending for a championship. Players obtained must “fit” the system.

PG/SG
SF/PF

good breakdown - is this from a site, or did you put this together?
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Obviously the dream scenario is to get the 1st or 2nd pick in the lottery, get Griffin or Rubio and then get a someone like Nash/Kidd/Odom/Artest to sign for the MLE.

Alright, let me unveil my actual plan:

1) Draft S. Curry (+3.8M in 2010)
2) Sign and trade Lee and Jeffries for R. Lafrentz (expiring), J. Bayless and S. Rodriguez. Since Portland has lots of money and will be over the cap for the foreseeable future after this offseason, they should be willing to swallow Jeffries contract in order to get Lee. (-$2.4M in 2010).
3) Sign M. Gortat using a portion of the MLE for 3 years at $2.7/3/3.3M (+3.0M in 2010)
4) Offer Memphis E. Curry (11.2m in 10/11) and a 2011 2nd rd pick for Darko ($7.5M expires 2010) and Marko ($7.5M in 10/11) (-3.7M in 2010). I might give them the 2012 1st Rd if they do it without us having to take back Marko Jaric.
5) Sign and trade N. Robinson for a 2010 1st Rd Pick and an expiring contract.
6) Sign Chris “Birdman” Andersen to the other half of the MLE for 3 years 3/3.3/3.7 (+3.3M in 2010)

Roster Spots:

8-Man Rotation in 2009/2010:
PG S. Curry
SG L. Hughes
SF D. Gallo
PF W. Chandler
C C. Andersen
PG/SG J. Bayless
SF/PF A. Harrington
PF/C M. Gortat

Bench:
1) S. Rodriguez
2) C. Duhon
3) R. Lafrentz
4) D. Milicic

IR/NBDL:
1) Q. Rich
2) M. Jaric
3)

2010/11 Salary:

S. Curry $4.1M
D. Gallo $3.3M
W. Chandler $2.1M
M. Gortat $3.3M
C. Andersen $3.3M
M. Jaric $7.5M
J. Bayless $2.2M
S. Rodriguez $2.8M

$28.6M under contract in 2010/11. Assuming a $64M cap in 2010/11, the Knicks would have $35.4M in cap space for the summer of 2010. That equals two max contracts.

Great job on the initial post -- the way you laid it out it really shows what an awesome job Walsh has done in just over 1-season.

He moved a tremendous amount of crap and bad salaries this year - he has amassed nearly $50M in expiring contracts and has approximately $4M in trade exceptions.
Throw in the fact that Mobley's deal would be paid by insurance and that's another little chip to play with.

Regarding your own off-season plan.

Can the MLE be broken into 2 separate deals? Wasn't sure that was possible and even if possible not sure you'd be able to get either Gortat or Andersen for the $ you suggest.

Also -- I'm ok with the S. Curry draft but then you follow that up with a Lee trade that nets us (2) more smaller guards in Bayless and Rodriquez. That would mean (2) smallish combo guards in Curry and Bayless.

How about Lee and Duhon for Rodriguez, Webster and Outlaw -- this at least gets rid of 1-point and it balances us out with a very solid 3-man off the bench.

Trade Nate for 2010 pick and expiring sounds good.

Sign - Gortat for full 3-year MLE.

Try to deal with E. Curry and Jefferies at the deadline using expirings and exemptions.

Start Sergio and Gortat -- bring Webster and Outlaw off the bench.

Rodriquez
Hughes
Chandler
Harrington
Gortat

Curry
Webster
Outlaw
Gallo
Jefferies

this is definitely a challenge to figure out a way to make the playoffs AND not take on any longterm salary, but IMHO, i don't think making the playoffs next season is an absolute must... who cares if we don't own our lottery pick? we can't take on contracts hoping to make a playoff run at the expense of killing the cap... IMO this team will be better next season just from having a full season under their belt of playing in this system & adding a couple defensive minded players in the frontcourt who can block some shots.

personally i think setting ourselves up for the 2010 offseason should be our #1 priority, which means make sure we have enough cap space to target 2 max FA's while not totally tanking as a team altogether, & add a likely lottery pick so we don't have to miss out on a draft with guys like Derrick Favors & John Wall possibly (if he doesn't declare for this year's draft that is)

i would try to do this:

- trade up 2 slots to draft Demar Derozan (offer MEM both our 2nd round picks in 2010)
- trade Lee, Nate & Jefferies to WAS for Brendon Haywood, Etan Thomas, Mike James & their 2010 1st rd. pick protected to 3 (all expirings)
- sign Chris Anderson to half the MLE

8-Man Rotation:
PG Duhon (expiring)
SG Derozan
SF Chandler
PF Harrington (expiring)
C Haywood (expiring)
PG/SG Hughes (expiring)
SF/PF Gallinari
PF/C E. Thomas (expiring)

Bench:
1) Q Rich (expiring)
2) Birdman
3) M James (expiring)
4) Curry (he's not tradeable anywhere until he proves he can play again)

IR/NBDL:
1) D-Leaguer
2) D-Leaguer
3) D-Leaguer

* I honestly think this team would be an improvement over last year's team, just from the fact that we would finally have some shotblockers on the roster, & a very talented young SG who we can groom to be the star of this franchise some day... that way, even if we miss out on Lebron or Wade in free agency, we can still target guys like Amare, Bosh or Nash & have a potential big 3 as our nucleus going forward along w/Chandler & Gallo, & we'd still have a likely lottery pick in the 2010 draft to fill whatever hole we need to fill... sure we'd be losing some rebounding production from Lee for a year at least, but we'd be adding to overall depth on the team & set ourselves up for a ton of flexibility down the road.

The MLE (not the LLE) can be split among one or more players. I think pairing Lee with Jeffries could net us something close to your package including Webster or Outlaw instead of Bayless. But I really don't see any other way to get rid of Curry/Jeffries than to package it in a sign and trade with Lee or Nate or to take back a bad contract like Jaric. As for Andersen and Gortat... you probably are correct about what they will command, I think paying Gortat the full MLE for backups isn't a good idea.

I don't think we need to trade up for Derozan... the combine will make that clear, but whether we end up with Derozan, Jennings, Curry, Evans or Teague, I think we can stand pat at the 8 spot. Not sure why Washington does that deal though... but I can understand not making moves for the sake of making the playoffs, I just would like to put a competitive team out there to truly start changing the culture of the Knicks... got to start somewhere... if it has to be 2010, so be it...

I think there will be a lot of pressure to make the playoffs this upcoming season. Walsh indicated that is a big goal in some interview I recall on his wrap up of the season and state of the Knicks. 1) Don't want to give up a lottery pick in 2010 2) Wants the younger players to experience the playoffs and believes anything can happen in the playoffs 3) Said the fans deserve to experience the playoffs 4) Said it is a way to attract top free agents 4) He didn't directly imply but suggested on a follow up question that the owner would like the team to make the playoffs.

I will try to find the article, I think it was Sporting News but he did others and said pretty much the same thing.

i just don't wanna take any chances of losing out on the kid & i know MEM has no need for another SG w/Mayo there... they need some help in the frontcourt & they seem like a likely candidate who maybe looking to trade down to take a guy like Earl Clark & get some value out of their pick IMO... GS is always unpredictable w/their roster moves & if they end up trading Monta Ellis like it's been rumored, they may be looking to add another scorer who can play in an uptempo style offense... Derozan has a following in Cali, he grew up there & played college ball there... IMO he's a player that could become a marketable guy for them... plus Stephen Jackson is very tradeable w/his contract.

Too bad Lee wasn't sign to that reasonable contract because Memphis is a team that wants Lee very bad. There I go again throwing that salt.

MEM wanted him but Lee said he wouldn't sign w/them... wasn't that the reason the whole trade was nixed for Mayo in the first place?

Take Mullens 8

Resign David Lee

Go back to Sacremento and offer them Nate in the same deal they would take Jefferies
Offer the LLE to Morris Almond--put him on the SL team but show the love and the intention to sign.
Offer the MLE to Steve Nash

Try to acquire a second pick at 14 from Pheonix using a 2012 top 10 protected 1 and 3mm in cash and grab the best PG available also buy one of Minnesota's second round picks and take either Demarre Carrol or Jeff Pendegraph

Offer the MLE to Steve Nash

according to Hoopshype, Phoenix has a team option on him for next season... why would they let their franchise PG go via free agency for nothing in return? that's even more idiotic than us letting D Lee walk w/o getting back any value.

Briggs, I like your scouting, but your math and understanding of the cap severely limits the value of your proposed trades. Take the Robinson/Jeffries to SacTown scenario. That worked because Nate's and Jeffries' salaries matched Kenny Thomas. SacTown would end up with the RFA rights to Nate. Now, we would have to re-sign Nate to trade him. They now have Thomas's $8.8m expiring contract and SAR's $6.6M expiring-- while something might be arranged, the deal isn't as nice and neat as it was.

As for offering the MLE to Nash, if you don't wait for him to opt out of his contract, that is tampering... we will lose draft picks (he isn't a FA this year unless he opts out).

I like the idea of offering Almond the LLE...kid can shoot. The idea of grabbing another 1st is also good... see if it works.

i've heard conflicting reports... some media sources say the 2010 FA class will include Nash as 1 of the big names, & Hoopshype has it being a team option for next year... other people have been saying Nash can opt out himself & become a FA this year... i don't see why he would tho... $13 mil is a lot to give up at his age... he can still easily get a MLE contract in 2010, why would he leave that money on the table if he didn't have to?
