Until ricky rubio get his buyout taken care off there is no need talking about him. There has been so many teams that have gotten ripped off by europe players or buy there contracts it has happen way too much. European basketball clubs most times won't let a player go with a big contract because they own him. Say we do draft him and his contract still hasn't been bought out what would guys do if he is not here and ripped us off. There going be a lot of teams that will pass up on him if his contract isn't dealt with because teams aren't going to waste time with his contract. It just a lost cause to this becaue nobody wins if his contract isn't taken care off.

If the Knicks are in the position to acquire the rights to Rubio, DO IT.

The contract stuff can always be worked out later. I think JVK will likely be more reasonable because of the touch economic situation, they'll probably look to cut some kind of a deal with him.

rather than buy out his contracts, why doesn't MSG or some cablevision entity just buy his team? I mean, yea, I'm sure Stern wouldn't be happy, but is there anything in the By Laws to prevent? Probably.

With Rubio likely entering his name for the NBA 2009 Draft, rumors have been circulating that once a buyout is reached Rubio will likely state what teams he wishes too play for. (translated) I really would love to get drafted by the NBA and from what my friends and coach tells me I am probable to go as early as the number 2 pick in the NBA draft. It would be a great honor". When asked what team he envisions drafting him Rubio with a smirk claimed " any team will do fine, but I heard New York City is a wonderful place from my friend Danilo" Danilo could not be contacted to confirm this but its likely with Rubio roots and his friendship with New York Knickerbocker Danilo Gallinari, Rubio can state his want to play for New York and New York alone. The Knicks coming off a dissapointing 32-50 season are looking at all their options and would probably take Rubio immediately if given the chance and if the consensus 1st overall pick Blake Griffen is taken before then.

Found this on Knicks PSD forum. Get these rumors started people..... I would love nothing more then this kid coming here and having a trio of young kids in Rubio-Gallo-Chandler moving forward.... GET IT DONE WALSH!!!!

I will let The Skeptic and The Fan to react to this:

Skeptic: I've seen this before oh so many times, its ridiculous. Don't you guys remember the Yao Ming saga? They probably asked him the same thing and he mentioned the Knicks. Rumors started floating around and suddenly every fan believed Yao was a Knick. We know what happened after that. So yay, he wants to be in NY because Gallo is his friend. We'll see if he really has the guts to shut down every workout and state he will only go to NY. Then I'll praise him and become a believer. Until then, every candidate in the draft always seems to have a conection to NY and would love playing here.

Fan: This is awesome! Practically the best news we've had in a while!! I really hope the Knicks grab one of the three top spots this draft, but if not, it would be so huge to be able to draft Rubio! I really hope this friendship with Gallo is true because it would be just the best thing to happen to the Knicks in a while! Having both Rubio and Gallo in a team coached by Mike D'Antoni would be unreal! There is no doubt that Rubio needs a guy like Mike D as his coach. Its a match made in heaven. I believe this Gallo conection could be huge on draft night, along with the buyout thing, If the Knicks could use that buyout issue to scare teams away and guaranteed Rubio they will pick him, it would be the first real step of progress and a good future for the Knicks. If this happens its gonna be a great birthday present for me (its a day after the draft).

Consensus: As Lebron-to-the-Knicks, it sounds great but everything would have to go Knicks favor for this to happen. Is playing in NY, with D'Antoni and Danillo enough for Rubio to reject being taken #2 in the draft? Cancel his workouts and say he will only sign with NY? Will the buyout thing play a role in this? Will the Knicks move up? A Knicks Fan hopes so, but won't believe until he sees it. We've been in this road before and the results haven't been good for us.

More gasoline for the fire:
Guest Post: Why Rubio in NY Makes Sense
By Tommy Dee - Apr 20, 2009 8:13 pm

Tommy Dee says: I’d hope the Kings, who have a 25% chance at 1, fall to 2. Then the Knicks can offer their first round pick and Nate Robinson, who the Kings were reportedly interested in, for Kenny Thomas and the 2nd pick in a sign and trade.

Just a thought.

Kudos to loyal Gym Rat “NYCBaller,” who emailed me his top 4 reasons why he thinks Ricky Rubio to NY makes sense. As always we encourage your thoughts, so if you have a submission, send it to theknicksblog@gmail.com

“…Why Rubio to NY makes so much sense….

1. Rubio and his agent know that he has some control over where he lands in the NBA. Once the lottery shakes out he can tell teams he does not wish to play for that he is going back to Europe as International players are allowed 3 exits from the draft.

2. Rubio and his agent know that the Knicks do not have a 2010 1st round draft pick. Declaring this year may be a bit earlier then he wanted but it makes good business sense and would be his best chance to land in NY. Acquiring a 2010 first round pick is easier said then done and since the Knicks are in the Lottery this year this may be their best chance to land someone like Rubio.

3. The NBA is controlling his destination to a certain extent - Rubio has a sizeable buyout. It will take much more then a rookie salary to bridge the gap. He is extremely marketable and the NBA knows this. Rubio wants to be in NY and the NBA wants him to be in NY. I just feel it. It makes too much sense.

4. Rubio wants to play for the Knicks - Tons of opportunities and it is a diverse city. Also, D’Antoni is running the team which is a huge draw for international players.

The Knicks are in the lottery and there are several teams who can’t afford not to get young talent out of this draft. Remember Gallinari was adamant about being drafted by New York or New Jersey. Rubio hasn’t made such demands, and obviously will be a higher pick, but it will be interesting to see what comes out of his camp. The NBA needs him here…now.

Let me address your points...

Ok then...

It's interesting that Rubio has the Euro connection here and more than likely really wants to play here AND fits this system to a T. Anyway, I do hope we can get the second pick in the draft and get this guy. As far as another point guard, I do like Flynn.

The NBA really needs NY to succeed. With this economic climate, that is no longer an opinion. It is a fact of business. Having a great point guard (e.g. Rubio) and a playmaker/shooter like Gallo along with Chandler and DLee, we would really be one superstar away from contention. Maybe we do "get" 2nd in the lottery. And if we don't and Rubio slips a bit, we might be able to trade for him. Rubios's buy out might really become an issue. Even though teams can't pay more than 500k, he might need some sort of endorsement deal that would be available in NY. Regarding trading for Rubio, if not on draft night (e.g. - Nate) then once we can do sign and trades. We at least have some thing worth trading (e.g. - Nate and Dlee (preferably Nate as DLee would thrive being the third of fourth option).

Stranger things have happened (e.g. - Chicago "winning" the lottery last year).

Knicks need to win the lottery and move to a top 3 pick, end of story. If they go #1 the obviously take Griffin. If they are 2 or 3 they get Rubio. If they stay where they are they are hosed

Wow, he's the TRUTH!! That video was awesome I played it twice. I have a gut feeling that the Knicks will get a top 3 pick in the lottery because it's just our time to get lucky.

He is in a similar situation Gasol was in 2001. I mean, if he is drafted before 4th, he will play in the NBA this coming year. If he does not, he wont do it next year. Its all about the money.

Every year we always go through this thing where we think "the knicks have to get a high draft pick because XXXX is coming out and the NBA wants him here" and it never happens. I would like Rubio as much as anyone else, but it's pretty tough for us to get the #2 pick in the draft.

only things that could help the Knicks chances, besides getting lucky in the lotto, is

1) Rubio does the "I will only play for these teams" thing
2) The potential $7.8 mil buyout for him scares some teams enough given the economy

Well then the knicks should be primed to take the kid if the buyout is in play. A team isn't going to spend 10 million on a question mark.

Teams can only pay 500k of the buy out so Rubio will have to up the rest. Thats a big buy out number but the kid can just sign another endorsement deal and give it to the team in payments, so its not a big number in reality.

But He must go high in the draft to make some numbers work, and he can make more money in NY which he has to in order to pay his old team.

The knicks have assets to make a trade/swap to move up.

We likely have to give up Dlee.
