9 GMs Rate the Top 10 Prospects....

New postby Johnny Hoops on Wed Apr 15, 2009 2:42 pm
Pretty interesting article...

They asked 9 GMs at the Portsmouth tournament to rank the Top 10 draft prospects.

The unanimous selections were Griffin, Rubio, Thabeet, Harden and Hill ...Tyreke Evans was 1 vote short of a unanimous selection. Rounding out the top 10 were Aminu, Curry, Teague and Lawson (each with 5 votes)

E. Clark was 11th with 4 votes and Flynn 12th with 3 votes.

Others receiving (1) vote included....

Blair, J. Johnson, Mullens, Jennings, Henderson and Derozan.

So 9 GMs view the draft in this order...

#1 Griffin (10 Top 10 Votes - rated # 1)
#2 Rubio (10 Top 10 Votes - rated #2)
#3 Thabeet (10 Top 10 Votes - rated #3)
#4 Harden (10 Top 10 Votes - rated #4)
#5 Hill (10 Top 10 Votes - rated #5)
#6 Evans (9 Top 10 Votes - rated #6)
#7 Aminu (5 Top 10 votes -- ranked between 7 - 10)
#8 Curry (5 Top 10 Votes -- ranked between 7-10)
#9 Teague (5 Top 10 Votes -- ranked between 7-10)
#10 Lawson (5 Top 10 Votes -- ranked between 7-10)
#11 Clark (4 Top 10 Votes)
#12 Flynn (3 Top 10 Votes)
#13 - 18 (in no particular order were Blair, J. Johnson, Mullens, Jennings, Henderson and Derozan)

The things I find most interesting are Jennings with (1) vote and Derozan with (1) vote.

This would seem to indicate that Derozan will be there when we pick...(nice). But it is a bit worrisome that so many failed to see him as a top 10 pick.

I also think its interesting that 5 GMs view Curry as a top 10 pick -- that says that many believe his skill and make-up will overcome his lack of NBA athleticism.

I personally an NOT a Ty Lawson fan and would have him in the late teens.

I'm not a fan of Jordan Hill or Harden and hope the Knicks do NOT have a shot at either -- basically I just don't like watching them play.

Also find it intersesting that 10 guys view Thabeet as a top 10 pick yet so many knuckle heads on this board call him a stiff and a bust. Heard Jimmy Sykes on ESPN this morning say that Thabeet could walk on to an NBA game today without practice and change the game at the defensive end. Jim Calhoun also called him one of the greatest defenders in NCAA history -- both are right on Thabeet.

NBA officials rate their top draft prospects

PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- The Milwaukee Bucks won't be in the NBA playoffs, but they will be in the Draft Lottery -- for the third straight year.

The Bucks, who wrap up their season Wednesday night on the road against the Indiana Pacers, would have 10th overall pick if the draft was held today.

With that in mind, nine NBA general managers and player personnel officials attending the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament last week were asked to select their top 10 draft prospects.

A total of 18 players received votes, although only five of them were unanimous selections.

They were power forward Blake Griffin of Oklahoma, center Hasheem Thabeet of Connecticut, point guard Ricky Rubio of DKV Joventut, shooting guard James Harden of Arizona State and power forward Jordan Hill of Arizona.

Guard Tyreke Evans of Memphis also came close to being a unanimous choice. While a Western Conference scout felt Evans was a top 10 talent, he left him off his ballot because he felt Evans wouldn't fit in well with his team's style of play and couldn't make a perimeter shot on a consistent basis.

Of those aforementioned six players, Griffin was a unanimous choice as the best player. Rubio and Thabeet were regarded as the second- and third-best draft prospects.

Rounding out the top 10 best players were forward Al-Farouq Aminu of Wake Forest and guards Stephen Curry of Davidson, Jeff Teague of Wake Forest and Ty Lawson of North Carolina.

Each received five votes. Just missing being a top 10 selection was forward Earl Clark of Louisville, who had four votes..

Seven other players drew top 10 votes, led by point guard Jonny Flynn of Syracuse, who has yet to declare for the draft, with three votes.

The other players were power forward DeJuan Blair of Pittsburgh, combo forward James Johnson of Wake Forest, center B.J Mullens of Ohio State and point guard Brandon Jennings, who is playing for Virtus Roma in Italy – all with two votes – along with shooting guard Gerald Henderson of Duke and shooting guard DeMar DeRozan of Southern California – with one vote each.

I don't value too many GMs opinions. They actually get picks wrong more than they get them right. The funny thing is that I found fans more knowledgable about players skillsets and potential then people in the business to do so. Ernie Grunfeld while in Milwaukee admitted that as Knick GM he didn't spend a lot of time scouting. He relied more on word of mouth and the NCAA tournaments (this would explain his 96 draft). I found that most GMs depend on trusted relationships, familarity with and popularity of certain conferences and word of mouth in evaluating talent. There is a lot of bias in drafting that sometimes benefits and at other times hurt teams. The Knicks scouts are heavy Big East guys for example.

It's getting pretty tiresome. The other day in a thread people were talking about a prospect (I think it was Pharz actually) and Briggs said "Trust me, I know." You have an opinion and it's just that.

Because GMs see guys like Derozan stink it up every year. Super college athletes dont impress GMs. Skill does. Thats why someone like Curry is ranked and Derozan isnt. At the very worst skill guys stick around. GMs watch the Harold Minors, Deshawn Stevenson, Quentel Woods, Gerald Green... these guys are a dime a dozen. Some show some flashes, most are flops.

There is a reason Rubio is #2 and ahead of Thabeet. The only thing more valuable that a long athletic pinpoint passing two way playing PG is that star frontcourt player and thats why you have Griffen/Rubio at 1/2 and all nine GMs agreeing.

Also if you want a run and jump guy lacking NBA skills like Derozan your better off gambling later down. Josh Howard, Ariza, Chandler, Prince, Granger (because he was hurt so much), Travis Outlaw... If I am a GM I thinking 8 is way to high for a guy like Derozan.

You're fired.
Seriously, though there is a lot of truth to what you said about these guy getting burnt in the past.

Thabeet is a top 10 because this draft is crap after one and two. Maybe Thabeet will learn how to play basketball in the NBA. Maybe he's the next Shawn Bradley or Steven hunter. He will have some moments because someone with his size will but hes going to get posterized on a nightly basis.

If I was picking 4 I would probably take him because he's the best player available there. You hope he hits his upside before he's 30 which is in like 2 years.

If Bynum hadn't been courted by Calhoun, would Briggs have known about him?

Whoa, Phar, Fish, and Allenfan are droppin' straight heat in this thread!

I dont think I have ever seen Derozan in any mock draft top ten. We should have the same critical eye trained towards these prospects as we do towards rising stars like Nate, Lee, and Chandler.

^^^^^ arent you at one of those Fox News tea bag parties dressed as Ben Franklin, Bip? You attention slut.

There isnt one around here, but I would go...should be some fine white trim at these things. We can talk about the tyranny of Obama, how much of a disappointment Greg Anthony was as a draft pick, and Dharma and Greg.

...Oh, and butt sex.
