I'd say laid off, but don't know if that's accurate. Long story short, I'm completely inexperienced at the position I was hired at and they needed more experience there, which they can get more cheaply if they hire in house. Because I was contract, my hours end at 5 PM today. Well, the cat got out of the bag before then, so now I'm sitting in an apartment I can't afford.

I really have no idea where to look for a job or what to do now. My training is to be a financial analyst at an investment bank (good luck now, right) and I have a successful sales history. I don't want to call anyone. I really have no idea what my next step is. So, I'm looking here for advice

Don't feel sorry for yourself--go get a basic job immediately--maybe two of them--nothing wrong with hard work to keep income coming in. That means supermarket--restaurant waiter any dirty job cut lawns etc..convenience store--get the jobs before OTHERS do. Continue to start applying for jobs you are QUALIFIED for but make sure you secure 1 or possibly two jobs now. Always make sure you have income coming in--don't rely on employment compensation--it runs out. Don't feel humility of taking a step down-- it's only temporary. You'll look back one day and laugh about it. The main thing is keeping the ability to pay your bills and have money for enjoyment.

I was having this discussion at lunch with a few people--what would you do if you had to start over right now--my answer would be work 80-100 hours put up a sign where I would cut lawns paint clean out gutters landscape and try to find a job at night at a fish restaurant as a waiter--do what it takes--thats what Im getting at. My grandfather had 4 kids--he ran an ice cream truck at night and worked for a tire company during the day when he was in his mid 20's and he ended up very well to do--thats what people did back then--thats what people must do now.

Use your brains and think outside the box---be aggressive--do what it takes.

Tell every-one you know you are looking for a job. Get onto a job networking site like linked-in and link in with as many work colleages, school colleages, friends and family as you can. When you're out of work you need to let people know you're looking. Be sure to let them know what kind of work you're looking for. I've been a software contractor for a lot of years, I'm currently looking myself and although I've worked with head hunters every full-time and contracting job I have ever landed has been via networking.

Most people understand that good people lose jobs and are happy to help if they can. Contact even those folks you've fallen out of contact with. I always feel bad when I realize the last time I contacted someone was the last time I was between contracts - but no one has ever complained.

jim, I need to update it, but I'll send it your way later... I really have no idea what to do. I sold financial products, learned to design them... I don't have a plan B. I didn't think I'd need one. I know how to put drywall. I've reported and written articles. Maybe try that. But other than that I can't think of anything to do or a store that's hiring

don't listen to BRIGGS... collect that unemployment, take a breather & reassess ur plan for the future... now is a good time to continue ur education & get certified to move up in your career path, or u can explore other career courses & try what u may have always wanted to try but never quite had the nerve to... for u it probably makes no sense to bust ur ass at a grocery store working for minimum wage (not that there's anything wrong w/honest work), but right now that will only add to your daily stress... losing ur job in your chosen career path is stressful enough.

my advice to u would be to register w/as many good recruitment & temp agencies in your field as possible, get ur resume out there as quickly as possible, flood all the internet job sites like Monster, Indeed, CareerBuilders, Yahoo jobs, etc... be proactive in your job search... don't sit idly by & wait for an opportunity to come to you... go out & find it.

most importantly, DO NOT feel sorry for yourself... right now in this economy being laid off is nothing uncommon... don't feel like you've failed... look at this as an opportunity! things always happen for a reason bro... it's up to u to take advantage of this opportunity & not let the situation defeat you... there's absolutely nothing wrong w/using unemployment, u've paid your taxes just like everyone else, u've earned that right.

You should sit down and exam if you just got terminated from a career position or a job. Once you decide then you can move on. If it is a career position then you most likely want to use what they gave you in that exit interivew (hopefully they did that) to good use. If it was lack of experience, immediately work on rectifying that. You are entitled to benefits but use your time wisely.

If it was a job then maybe keep in mind what Briggs said. Jobs and careers aren't the same and shouldn't be treated the same. HR person gave me that advice on an exit interview early in my career.

He didn't put posters up or anything, he just sat on the porch like a goon and waited. That little boy's gotta think 'You got a pet. You got a responsibility.' You may want to consider living with your parents or siblings, so you don't have to worry about expenses and just worry about securing a job. Also, ask your former boss if you can do anything for a salary your are comfortable with. I am sure you've left a positive impression with your boss, and you can contribute to the company's bottomline someway. If not, let your boss know you have sales experience and see if he/she can give you a recommendation to someone else. Good luck.

One suggestion, is take a look at Public Accounting firms like E&Y and PWC. Particularly at E&Y. They tend to hire a lot of financial analysts and are willing to train them as auditors. Once more you also can select financial fields in public accounting.

I agree, take the unemployment, most people think it is a handout, but it isn't, it is inurance, unemployment insurance that you earn by working , as you have been. TAke it! then hit the market hard, looking for a job in your field or any related field. You may have to take something you don't really like, but you have to eat and live, so always keep your eyes open, but keep your income flowing..

I see, pretty tough situation. Your parents, aunts, uncles, other relatives are still options. They may also be able to pass your resume along.

I watched 20/20 last Friday, and there was a special on a stock trader (in the mid 40's) who was making 750K, has an MBA from UCLA, but has been unemployed for the prior 2 years. He finally sucked up his ego and became a pizza delievery boy this year. He also accepted the fact that his multi-million dollar house will be foreclosed. The lesson I got from it was to live beneath my means, save and invest, and I am not too good for any job.
