NEW YORK -- Stan Van Gundy loves having Patrick Ewing on his staff. He can't figure out why the New York Knicks don't want him.

Van Gundy criticized the Knicks on Monday night for failing to give Ewing, the franchise's career scoring leader, a coaching job in the organization.

"I'm not trying to needle anybody or tell them their business," Van Gundy said after Orlando beat the Knicks 106-102. "What's amazing is they honor the guy, I don't know, every year. They honor him, but while they've got a lot of ex-players in their organization, they've never made any move to try to hire him. That to me is amazing."

Ewing was honored at halftime, when the Knicks presented seven of their former players with "legends awards." Introduced last, he received a loud ovation from the fans, who seem to appreciate him even more than they did when he was playing in New York from 1985-2000.

Van Gundy isn't sure the organization does.

"I mean, I don't know. It's sort of back and forth," Van Gundy said. "They seem to like you. The fans certainly love him. The organization to me sort of pretends to appreciate him and like him."

Ewing was a favorite of Van Gundy's brother, Jeff, who coached the Knicks from March 1996 until resigning in December 2001.

Ewing is in his second season on Van Gundy's staff after previously serving as an assistant coach in Washington and Houston. He is credited for his work with centers Yao Ming and the Magic's Dwight Howard, who came out early to watch the halftime ceremony -- none of the Knicks players did.

Yet he was apparently never a serious candidate for the Knicks' coaching job last year when Isiah Thomas was fired. Meanwhile, New York did interview former Knicks guard Mark Jackson, even though he has no coaching experience.

"This is a guy that not only was the face of their franchise, but when your best player works as hard as he does and competes as hard as he does, he gives your team a chance to be great. They say great things about him, but when it's time to put up or shut up, they don't do anything," said Van Gundy, who recently feuded with Shaquille O'Neal over his comments about O'Neal's flopping.

"So you know, it's been amazing and it's been our fortune in Orlando, that it's pretty amazing that with the ex-players that they hire here to me, there hasn't been a move. There are other ex-players that got interviews for their head coaching job, but then a guy who's been in the league with three different teams as an assistant can't get an interview."

Ewing has said he wants a top job in the NBA and there was some thought he would end up back in New York last year, either as the head coach or perhaps as an assistant on Mike D'Antoni's staff.

"I'm just like any person who is coaching in this league," Ewing said before the game. "I'm just looking for an opportunity, that's all."

Stan's droppin' ether this year. He's got swag now that his magic are dumpin. Fat boy's gums are flappin now, he cant shut up. First Shaq, now this.

This isnt really his place to talk. He doesnt know what the hell went on between the Knicks and Patrick. At first thought, I reasoned that Jeff put his ass up to it. I mean, why the hell would Stan even care about something like that?

But my ultimate theory is that Stan probably feels like he needs to be a star in order to have job security. He's insecure. He did real well for the Heat, but he got fired because he wasnt a "star coach" and when things went bad it was easier to go for a bigger, splashier name. He's trying to create some cache and carve an image so he becomes less expendable. Hence, why he's going for unnecessary drama.

Stan the man told the truth. Ewing should have had an interview. I think that D'Antono will be gone in 2010 and Ewing will be in. We will never play defense under D'antonio. He likes to play the gambles game. Hoist up shots and hope the other team miss.

DAntoni was brought here for one reason: FA class of 2010. Walsh is going to purge this whole roster and hope like hell he can get Wade and Lebron to pair up at the garden

Why would anyone have a problem with the statements that were made. We have a fat underachieving big man with no desire that we need to get value out of. We had to watch Aguire do nothing and now whos in charge of the bigs Herb?

Dwight and Yao sing the guys praises and credit him with the strides they have made. There has to be something to it, there is no reason that herb can be a coach and ewing can't.

This is a trash organization right now that has missed the playoffs for 8 straight years next year will be our 9th out of the playoffs and we don't have one star to build around. It's a disgrace we aren't elite at anything, there is no reason the suns should have a better medical staff then we do, and there was no reason to suffer through mismangment for the previous 7 seasons. We have pg that don't know how to play and Clyde begging to help. This organization is to stupid to really maintain it's history. Small steps were taken last night, but give me a break give the guy a job.

Well I kind of agree that Stan might be better served not speaking up like this, but it's hard to disagree. The Knicks make a lot of questionable decisions. You always get concerned about management when they miss the no brainers. Hiring Ewing is a no brainer. I guess that means they have no brain.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Stan is doing what many coaches do, they promote their assistants.

Its not like Pat has been interviewing in other places either.

He has done a great job with Yao and Dwight but does that qualify him as a head coach?

The fans would have loved a starphuch return of our warrior but if he sucked it would be a disaster. With this team, I think MDA has done a great job with all the roster changes and increasing the value and output of Dlee, Nate, and Chandler.

Herb Williams has certainly earned his place to coach the team ahead of Pat, as have many assistants in the league. Pat the player an pat the coach are two different animals.

Stan just sticking up for his guy. He might have overstepped his comments a bit, but its no biggie. I think you have a chance to hire MDA you don't think Ewing, you just go after your man!

Knicks is not only one organization that was mismanaged lately.
The cancer of "politic correctness" almost destroyed American economy and undercut greatest American traditions of hard work, commitments, dedication, and loyalty.
Knicks club and Cablevision is just small example.
But when smoke will settle all this crap will phase out itself.

What?

...and Ewing wanted to be the HEAD COACH. Something he is clearly not qualified for.

No one is saying give him the head coaches job. He isn't polished enough to take over a team or speak with the media. But, to not offer the guy a position is criminal.

The lakers do it all the time the celtics do it, you just have to in order to maintain the history of the team. He has a number of great moves, fakes and you can't put a price on a guy that has been there and done it in this city. That can help coach players through the mistakes he made in this city.

It's not that hard to figure this **** out I just don't know why things have to be overcomplicated all the time in this league and with this team.

Think pat really wanted to be just the big mans coach? I thought he wanted to at very least be top assistant. Ahead of Herb? I also think MDA gets to bring in his top trusted guys to be HIS guys.

I think if your not even interested in giving him the gig its best to not even interview him.

I always wondered why ewing was never officially offered a job here... but SVG needs to shut his fat arse up. It is not his place to say who we should hire, and then question our respect for Ewing... This guy is a tool... wouldn't be suprised to dwight use his trump card to get rid of that fat turd when his opt out year arrives.....

Van Gundy is right. At the least, Ewing should have been brought here YEARS ago when we got Curry. Isiah hates Ewing though. Hates him. I'm surprised Isiah even decided to come to the Knicks.

And Dolan probably likes the fact that Isiah doesn't like him at all.

It bothers me too, but this in particular hits a nerve. The freaking visiting team is paying their dues by giving respect to Ewing and the rest of the great Knicks as well.

Yet our team stays in the locker room doing whatever, while the visiting team is giving respect to the guys that paved the way for the current Knicks to crap on. I do hope Walsh was paying attention to that.

Stan Van Gundy was absolutely right with what he said.
The Garden is nothing but a joke that uses people.
There is no possible explanation why Patrick hasn't been bought back to the organization.
This has nothing to do with Walsh or Dantoni.
This is all about Dolan.
Van Gundy is a great coach.

We still need a GM... I think him and Herb would have a lot of synergy as coaches because they've warred with each other before. Ewing could run the defensive and effort portion of practice. I don't really give a damn... he definitely deserves to be a part of this organization.
