This from Alan Hahn's chat today:
“… I know Donnie tried to buy that pick to get Chalmers. They absolutely loved him. But the cost was astronomical ($2M I heard) so they passed and Miami got him. I know the Knicks have boatloads of cash, but $2M for a second-round pick is a big investment for a player that you could not (at the time) guarantee would make the team."
Are you ****ing kidding me??? Why the hell would Walsh refuse to use the one advantage that the Knicks have over most teams? $2M is nothing for a high 2nd round pick that you really like. It costs less in money and roster space than if they bought a pick at the end of the 1st round since the contract isn't guaranteed and neither is the roster spot.
A lot of people on this board were clamoring for Walsh to buy a pick, in order to draft a player exactly like Chalmers. The fact that he had the opportunity and declined it is mind boggling. Chalmers is making $700,000 this year. Since when is $2.7 million too expensive for a talented young PG that could be groomed to be your starting PG for the next decade?
That's just ****ed up.

If it didn’t work in Phoenix with Nash and Stoutamire... it’s just not a winning formula. It’s an entertaining formula, but not a winning one. - Derek Harper talking about D'Antoni's System
