Eddy Curry in hurry for $8 million BY FRANK ISOLA DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Saturday, January 31st 2009, 2:58 AM Eddy Curry asked the Knicks for an advance of approximately $8 million last year to offset his increasing financial debt, the Daily News has learned. The Knicks rejected Curry's bailout package, according to a person close to the troubled center, because the organization considered the amount excessive. The same source says that the Knicks did advance Curry approximately $2 million, which is commonplace in the NBA as long as the player is guaranteed to make double that amount on his existing contract. Curry will earn $9.7 million this season and is scheduled to make $22 million in the last two years of his current pact. Curry, 26, was granted an indefinite leave of absence by the Knicks on Monday, two days after his former girlfriend and the mother of two of his six children was murdered in her Chicago apartment. A 9-month-old girl also was killed and according to the Chicago Sun-Times, DNA tests determined that Curry was the father of the baby. According to the report, Curry was ordered in November to increase his monthly child support payments to Nova Henry from $6,000 to $15,000. Curry also has a 3-year-old son with Henry who witnessed the double homicide. Reports of Curry's financial troubles first surfaced in December when Casual Male Retail Group sued the center for an unpaid bill of $46,000 dating back to 2006. Earlier this month, David Kuchinsky, Curry's driver from 2005-08, filed a lawsuit claiming he was the victim of sexual harassment. He accuses Curry of dropping his pants and making lewd remarks, and, in one incident, of brandishing a gun. In the suit, Kuchinsky also seeks $93,000 in unpaid wages and reimbursements. Curry has denied all charges. But Curry's lavish spending apparently dates back to his rookie season, when he was the first-round pick of his hometown Chicago Bulls. "He's been irresponsible with his money," said a person close to Curry. "He's a nice guy with a big heart and people have taken advantage of him. This started right when he was a teenager and drafted right out of high school. He started buying cars, jewelry and anything else you can think of." Curry's career and life began to spiral out of control in July 2007 when he and his family were robbed at gunpoint in their home in Burr Ridge, Ill. This season, Curry has appeared in only one game due to recurring knee pain and was recently criticized by Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni for his poor conditioning. D'Antoni said that Curry, who weighs between 340 and 350 pounds, must lose weight before he can play again. Teammates and friends have all expressed concern for the affable and easygoing Curry and wonder if his off-the-court troubles will permanently derail his career. Curry won't turn 27 until December and, if he can get himself fit, he still has time to salvage his career. It is unlikely that he will play again this season, but if Curry can come back strong over the next two seasons he could put himself in position to earn another lucrative contract.
