ESPN INSIDER says:
Kurt Thomas, Charlie Ward and Travis Knight, Knicks
Their names came up again as part of the Walker trade. Apparently, Scott Layden offered Thomas, Ward and Knight to the Celtics in return for Walker . Layden also offered this combination to the Mavs for LaFrentz and to the Warriors for Nick Van Exel . Clearly all three are still in play. Ward has a $2 million buyout on his $6 million contract this season. Knight is in the last year of his deal. The Knicks need to trim a roster spot or two, so expect Layden to keep working the phones to make something happen. With Dikembe Mutombo in the fold, apparently Thomas is now expendable.

im happy the knicks didnt make the trade for walker, because i dont think he is a team player or a good defender. but it is good to see layden trying to make something happen. i would have liked to get lafrentz i think he would do great next to deke. also he can strech the defense with his shooting. that would also give us to legit shot blockers with him and deke.

"but it is good to see layden trying to make something happen."

So this guy gets credit for failing? I dont get it... of course Boston said no. Hmm.. a 4 time all star for a 6'8 center thats in foul trouble after 90 seconds, a $6 million a year backup pg with bad knees and Travis freakin Knight.

Come on... I also heard he tried to get Garnett in the Sprewell deal, but Eisley and Spoon werent enough for McHale to pull the trigger.

Layden singlehandedly created this mess. When this team starts advancing in the playoffs every year we will be right where we were BEFORE this monkey took over.

This is the first year he has done ANYTHING positive, and getting Deke and Lampe were pure strokes of luck. Hopefully his luck continues and he catches some of the leagues GMs coming off nasty drinking binges.

You guys probaly won't even give him credit if he continues pulling off trades to continue to better this team huh? It's called forgiveness, we had 15 straight good playoff years.

Layden was dealt a tough hand and played it terribly. Now he seems to be taking some small steps toward redeeming himself.

He had an aging, overpaid team that was in inevitable decline. He had a management that didn't want to rebuild, he had a press corp and fan base that for some reason I'll never understand refused to embrace our superstar, and he had a superstar who therefore wanted out.

All that said, he made some terrible mistakes: Houston's contract, Eisley, Shandon, Rice, etc. That doesn't mean every move he makes going forward is doomed.

I liked the Dice trade at the time, even though it obviously hasn't worked out (we get excited about Lampe and Sweets -- think how pumped we'd be if we had Nene). Trading Spree was the right move, and KVH was probably the most we could get. Deke's a good signing. Can't write it off as good luck ... half of what a GM does is luck.

In sum, he's not an idiot. He made some mistakes but seems to be making some good moves now. Sure, there are others who I'd rather have as our GM, but who says they want to work in NY.

The offer to boston would have made sense for boston if they were more concerned with the financial aspect.

Boston took on 35milllion more in commitment. Dallas got a better player, but boston is redoing the team. It was a win-win.

I don't like Walker, but getting him also opens up other possiblilities for the team. His contract also is done in two years, so long term would not be a killer. I view Lafrenz as long term role player and not a star.

Laydog should be credited with not giving away the store in his attempts. The KT-Ward_Knight combo is an ecnomomic trade whom accepts it. Its not easy to move 3 for 1, and that is what laydog is trying to do.

"He had an aging, overpaid team that was in inevitable decline. He had a management that didn't want to rebuild, he had a press corp and fan base that for some reason I'll never understand refused to embrace our superstar, and he had a superstar who therefore wanted out."

This is where you are wrong, and why Layden is a BAD GM. A good GM would recognize the state of his roster (old and declining) and see the inevitable coming and do something about it.

An example of GOOD GM is in Indiana. Walsh knew the core of Antonio Davis, Dale Davis, Jalen Rose, Reggie Miller, Rik Smits and Derrik McKey wasnt going to win a title. So rather then adding MORE OLD players to a declining core he did the opposite. He traded Dale Davis for Jermaine Oneil. He didnt trade his draftpicks for players like Othella, and instead drafted a HS kid named Al Harrington. He traded his best player in Rose for young moveable players like Mercer, Miller and Artest. He drafted and brought in YOUNG players like Bender and Foster and all he has to show for it is one of the more talented rosters in the NBA.

Ernie Grunfeld recognized the Knicks plight and lack of athletecism and traded fan favorite Oakley for Camby. He traded OLD guys like Starks, Cummings and Mills for a then 27 year old Sprewell.

Layden has been terrible. You dont run a team based on fans and media, you do it based on what best for the team. Rather then just letting Ewing's $20 million expire and actually give us cap space he turned that into Rice, Longley, Knight, Anderson, and Eisley. Great way to rebuild.

He traded picks away for guys like Othella and Eric Strickland, at a time when we had NO young players.

Half of being a GM is NOT LUCK. Its all about having a plan. Granted, some plans dont work out, the MAgic's plan was get under the cap and sign 2 max level studs. Good plan. TMac has been great, GHill...not so great. The fact that Hill got hurt doesnt take away from the plan was solid.

What's LAyden's plan? McDyess was NOT a good gamble. He was coming off major surgery and cost us too much. On top of that he was part of a roster that had 6 guards and 7 PFs. Good plan.

He drafts 2 PFs this year. Ok, I can live with just taking the best players available, and Sweetney and Lampe were arguably those players. Thats fine. So please explain to me why you then trade Spree for ANOTHER POWERFORWARD. Another good plan Scottie. Thomas, McDyess, KVH, Spoon, Harrington, Lampe, Sweetney all PFs. Knight and Doleac might as well be also. Good plan Scottie.

Somebody please tell me why NOT screwing up the draft constitutes "steps in the right direction"

This guys is total garbage and has PLENTY of chances to chage the make up of this team. Offering Ward and Thomas for every all star in the league and getting hung up on is NOT a good effort.

I don't defend any of his moves prior to last year. I said, "He was dealt a tough hand and played it terribly." But let's look at last 2 years.

Dice was a dominant player. Took a risk on him, yes, but gave up Camby, a less dominant and seemingly more or just as injury-prone player, and a low lottery pick. No one knew what Nene would turn into (still don't, to be honest). I think this was a good trade that hasn't worked out. Maybe it will yet.

Was right to trade Spree. I love the guy, but he's on the decline and shouldn't be on a team like the Knicks that, at best, can hope to make the playoffs and maybe win one series (and that's a longshot). KVH is plenty flawed, but he has some skills and could be part of a better team 3 or 4 years from now. Can you say the same for Spree?

Lampe fell into our lap ... all luck. I don't buy it. The other GM's passed him by. Scared of his contract. That contract wasn't so hard to get out of, and he's locked up for a few years with the Knicks. Don't know if he'll pan out, but to get a late lottery value in round 2 is what GM's are paid to do.

Now he's trying to move some of those power forwards. Not a work of genius to try. We'll see where it goes, but if we pick up Mo Pete or someone like him, I'll be happy.

In sum, yes he screwed up in his first couple of years and probably should have been fired then. But in last couple of years he's doing a credible job of digging us out of the ****ty position he helped put us in.

This is a touchy subject with Knick fans. Layden has definitely screwed up, and he has also made attempts at correcting it. However - I stress the term ATTEMPTS. Nothing has panned out yet, yes we have a center now (he might suck) yes we have 2 draft picks now (they might not get any playing time) yes we got rid of Spree for someone younger (nobody wants him, he could be decent).

Layden has been shopping the combo of KT, Ward and Knight since last season - nobody wants them. We have a team overloaded with PF's nobody wants or needs. McDyess...please guys, come on - lets be realistic for once about him. He has been no good for this team, all of our hopes are on his bum knee. I would love nothing more then to see the guy come back and be a 20-10 type of player but I am just not that optomistic. He shouldnt even be in the team equation until he can prove that he can come back and remain durable. Everyone who lists him as our starting PF is only kidding themselves. He might take that job someday but that is a huge if - and I wouldnt gamble a franchise on it.

Overall I would let Layden finish this year, cut him some slack - and see what Layden v3.0 can produce on the court. Another losing season and he should be fired - a decent season and maybe he's got another year left in him to prove more.

Allow me to retort:
If the trade for McDyess was for just the players GREAT. It was a bad trade because that pick could have been Nene, Caron Butler or Stoudemire. If McDyess had no previous injury and THEN got hurt.. thats bad luck. He was already broken, and Layden traded everything we had and neefed (size and youth) for a broken player. then he breaks again. Shocker.

"Was right to trade Spree."
I agree. I loved Spree also. He was my favorite player. Nobody on 30 and 37 win team is untradable though. So who do we trade him for? ANOTHER UNDERACHEIVING MAX CONTRACT PLAYER WITH AN EVEN LONGER DEAL THAN SPREWELL'S.

Again, as for the draft all Layden did is not screw up. He just did what any GM would have done... took what he thought was the best player at that selection. Layden was originally brought in to be a draft expert. So far he has yet to draft a player to make the rotation.

Is all this changing? It might be, I hope it is. I'm not Layden-bashing, just calling it like I see it. I want Layden to be NBA exec of the year. All I see is him cling to roster that fails to produce wins.

The worst part is the Knicks because of their budget have more resources than almost every other team in the league. Those have gone to overpaying Houston, Spoon, Sprewell and trading for other overpaid players nobody else in the league wants.

thanks... I love this team. I want them to win, but even more I want a title. I am a ig Yankees fan. I share season tickets with a couple guys and will be at game 6 and hopefully game 7 this weekend. Nothing is like the feeling of watching a team you love win it all. Like the Yankees I am willing to rebuild with this group. At one point the Yankees stopped signing guys like Tartabull, and starting putting money into young guys. All of the sudden you have Bernie, Jeter, Posada, Mariano, Soriano, Nick Johnson, Juan Rivera, Andy Pettitte..

Danny Ainge was killed for making the Twan Walker trade. What he got was an extra draft pick, a great prospect in Welsh, and a servicable bigman in Raef. But I credit Ainge for having the balls to say "I look at this team and dont see a championship contender." He flat out said they were taking one step back to take 2 steps forward.

There are lots of young guys worth taking a risk on.. Eddie Griffen, Darius Miles, Demarr Johnson, Joe Johnson, Stro Swift... who knows. Problem is if you wait to long to take a chance on a couple guys like Fizer and Crawford, next thing you know they are off limits.

Imagine if Layden traded Kurt, Ward and Sprewell for some young players, draft picks and expiring contracts 2 YEARS AGO, and then said "I dont see this team (that just won 30 games) winning a title. We need take a step back to take 2 steps forward and get closer to our goal of winning a title."

Would Layden be run out of town? Would he be fired? I dont think so

Fish:

I'm with you on the step backward today for 2 steps forward tomorrow. There's a good deal of risk in doing this as who knows what Dallas #1 next year or Welsh will turn into, but you don't become a top-level team without taking some risk and making some good and lucky calls. I see the Spree/KVH deal as a variation on the 1 step, 2 step cha cha: a step back today vs. 2 steps back tomorrow.

I'd prefer to be stocking up with players that are improving rather than just getting rid of ones that are declining. Don't know what was available for Spree ... certainly tried to shop for him long enough that I suspect it wasn't much. And if we had trouble getting value for spree, what will we get for the overpaid, over-the-hill gang we've got left.

One thing's for sure: I'd rather write off Travis than have to watch him get any run.

no doubt.... I have no problem with KVH. I have some knocks on him but he's ok. What pissed me off so much is that we took on another max player (we had to for Spree under the CBA) with MORE years.

The problem isnt the bad players, its the bad contracts. Eisley, Anderson, KVH, Houston and Spoon are here for 3 years. We are a losing 2 time lottery team and we have a long term bad contract at almost every position. For all we know Matt Carol is the next John Starks.. a tough kid that just fights his way on the roster, except there are no spots because of the above mentioned players.

The thing with taking a risk on young players is your situation; the KNicks are in NBA limbo. Not bad enough to get a high pick and draft a franchise player, not good enough to add a player like Chauncy Billups that will give us the "one extra guy" that will elevate us to really contending for the finals each year again.

So we are stuck here forever until we break this pattern of adding mediocre players with bad deals that will keep us in this limbo, while management lies to fans and says they will field a great team.

If you replaced Anderson, Eisley, Spoon, Knight and Harrington with:
DeMarr Johnson, Theron Smith, Donyell Harvey, Matt Caroll Mike Doleac we would
1) win just as many games
2) save $24 million
3) have a bench/roster filled out with players under 25 that will work their asses off everyday to get better and stay in the NBA. You never know if one of these guys can be the next Starks, Mason or even Ben Wallace (undrafted).

We desperatly need a change in philosophy.

Sounds to me man that you've been spoiled by Steinbrenner too much. Remember there aren't too many Owners in sports like him, so to compare him with others would be unfair. The nets haven't won squat yet but conf titles , knicks did that already.

fish I am with you on that man, I am a big yankee fan and I agree, as soon as the Yankees stop using the quick fix, they started wining, Like you said, our core of Jeter, williams, Rivera, Pettite were the reasons why we won 4 rings in 7 years and have gone to 6 world series in 8 years, Regardless of what happens this year the Yanks and that core still have 4 rings, and will still compete for years to come, that is building a team, I want the same for the knicks, but it has to start with commiting to guys like Lampe, sweetney, andF. will, along with Milos and future draft picks....

yea playa but under the ownership of George and he isn't as involved in the nets as much as he is with his pet team the yankees, has already turned the nets from the ridiculous to the sublime and they are young and will compete for years to come, the knicks have not done that in a long time bro..
