Question about blu ray

With the ever changing world of electronics, I been wanting to ask this questions on the latest kinds of DVD's. Blu Ray.

From what I understand, blu ray is supposed to be more highly defined video? Better sound, better picture? Or is it made for the newer models of television sets, or player? I'm a little confused about blu ray. Does this mean that if you have a DVD collection, that you been building for the last 10 years or so, does it mean that it is now obsolete? I know you cannot play blu ray on the last DVD player models and have to get a new kind. I am making the assumption that the blu ray DVDs make the old DVDs obsolete, just like those first DVDs made the video tape obsolete.

Do I have that right? Because if it is right and there is conflict again about having a collection of movies at your convenience, then I may not deal with DVDs of any kind ever again. I might just switch totally over to pay per view type of situations from now on. There is no way in hell I am replacing my collection with another updated collection. What exactly is blu ray for?

Any takers for good brands of either DVD players or Blu Ray players or combos?

Blu ray is a high definition disc format - think of it like a high definition DVD that will look really good on a high def 1080p capable television set. It does not work on your old DVD player, you need a blu ray player (I recommend the Playstation 3). Blu ray players will play DVD's and in most cases will upscale them to 1080p so they look better.

Upscaled DVDs look really good so there are still useful. Blu rays tend to look a little better, especially on larger television sets (46+ inches).

In the long run you are right, it is a waste of $$$ to purchase films and have them in a library. Especially since we are headed toward digital storage where you will just download a movie and not have an actual disc to play. However, getting a netflix account or a blockbuster online account is a good way to save some $$$ - you can just get whatever movie you want when you feel like watching it and they mail it to you. Both also offer blu rays and DVD's. I havent bought a movie since switching to online renting.

Thanks Martin for moving it. And thanks OasisBU for the info. Just as I thought and glad to hear that Netflix still has a use. I actually like handling a disk, like some people still like to handle newspapers.

And I will still keep online renting in mind for the future. It's probably better for our GREEN minded situation for planet earth. Just hate putting people out of work though.

The Playstation 3 has been consistently rated as the best blu ray player - you can upgrade the firmware in it through downloads meaning the blu ray standard can be upgraded in the player. Right now I think blu ray 2.0 is the standard but if they came out with an update, the PS3 would be able to handle it.

You also get a gaming machine that is pretty amazing (I ended up selling my Xbox 360 and have barely touched my Wii since buying a PS3).

There are some cheaper options out there if you have no need for gaming, Sone makes a line of BDP-S350 and BDP-S550 (check them out on amazon.com or some other website for reviews and pricing). Those are both supposedly solid players.

The PS3 is consistently rated as the best player among reviewers though so I would recommend going that route if you want. The only downside is it doesnt come with a remote, you have to buy it or use the game controller. I use the controller and have no issues with it.

The other important thing to note is that you should have a 1080p resolution television set. I have a 40 inch LCD which has a really nice picture and does 1080p but even I am sometimes hard pressed to tell the difference between an upscaled DVD and a Blu ray on it. I have heard that larger sets 46+ inches have a clearer difference. It also depends on the blu ray you are watching, some do not have great film transfers and wont look all that much better. Others will look outstanding.

If you want to look at reviews of TV's and DVD and Blu ray players I highly recommend heading over to avsforum.com - it is a great place to get questions answered, figure out how to calibrate your TV and your DVD/Blu ray players.

I think renting through the mail is pretty green - at least you are reusing the discs. Only downside is delivering them uses carbon fuels but its probably better than purchasing new discs.

i rather purchase the discs myself but only movies i know i will watch over & over again... u never know when u'll be in the mood to watch 1 of your favorites & waiting a day or 2 for your netflix movie to arrive in the mail is like making an appointment to watch porn... it will be different once live streaming in HD becomes a viable option for most users but until then i'd rather have my own discs within reach.

1 point of advice tho, i wouldn't purchase or even spend the extra money to rent bluray discs of older titles... the remasters are not worth the price i've noticed... only for newer movies like Iron Man or Transformers, or computer generated animated titles like Pixar & Dreamworks titles, would i spend the bucks to buy them on disc.

My PS3 keeps paying for itself. It plays all my current DVD in 1080p. I am trying to build a blu ray collection now. Blu Ray is so damn expensive though.

right now, i have Iron Man, Transformers, Planet Earth nature series, Ratatouille & King Arthur on Bluray... i bought the Top Gun remaster & 300 in bluray too but really there was no big difference than the upscaled DVD versions so i sold those.

i would suggest u guys buy or rent the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy on bluray... the picture quality is awesome & u will notice details u never saw in the theater release.

can't wait til LOTR is out on bluray.

i discussed this for the past year. i started out with the now obsolete hd dvd player. the picture quality was incredible on the hd dvd ( in king kong, it felt like the t-rex was there and you could see the mosquitoes flying in and out of the t-rex's nose!). then people here told me to get the ps3 instead of a regular blu ray player. the jury is out on the quality of the picture. i have the dark knight, wall-e, iron man and incredible hulk and you could only tell the picture upgrade on the dark knight and most definately wall-e ( it looked INCREDIBLE) consistently throughout the film. iron man had some scenes but not many that are not different from an upscale dvd. incredible hulk was pretty much the same and i don't know if that was on purpose to give it a grainy look or not ( though the scene with the helicopter crash and rain looked great, especially the rain on hulk's skin). on the good side, the sound is awesome! it is unbelievable and feels like you are in the film. even low grade sounds like the hulk grunting booms on the subwoofer. it is a total home cinema experience. i rented wanted and traitor and it is the same thing, grainy look. i wonder, is it my tv ( though i did not experience the problem with the hd dvd) or maybe the firmware is not updated though it said it is updated? don't know but i will see with other titles coming in. righteous kill should come in tomorrow followed by kung fu panda.

yeah that's exactly how it is in the movie '300' too... but i know that the film was shot that way to appear grainy cuz it's the same way in the DVD version... i have a feeling Kung Fu Panda's gonna look incredible on bluray... most Computer animated titles look awesome on HD.

in general i've noticed that sometimes the graphics are a bit different in the PS3 games than the XBox 360 versions too... u will notice a lot sharper hard edges in the PS3 games as compared to the 360 titles at times, which appear more smoothed out overall... this is especially noticeable in Madden & Streetfighter HD remix.

& word, the sound is awesome on bluray! definitely pays to have a good surround sound system when u invest in this stuff... it makes the viewing experience so much more enjoyable.

So basically dropping 4 bills for a PS3 is worth it? I'm not a gaming head, but I did mess with my PS2 quite often so I am familiar with the system and more importantly the controllers. Thats one thing I hate about the X-Box.

I cant lie I'm damn near salivating at coppin' this thing and matching it with a major flat screen off of Craigslist. But the price has me nervous. When is it coming down?

Yeah, when you get the right movie its serious. Even tho I technically cant afford it, per say, being able to watch sports on a bomb ass t.v and ridiculous movies on a blu-ray is probably worth the debt. Its actually not super expensive. I blow that kind of money each month on Alcohol damn near.
