Are we a gimmick team? No, I don't think so. But it's a fresh new perspective, man. I hadn't thought about it like that until today.

Wearing gold, the Lakers were red-faced and heavy-lidded and extremely fortunate to escape with a 116-114 victory over a gimmick team that shouldn't have had a squirting flower of a chance.

"Speedball," Jackson described the Knicks' style before the game.

Trash journalism at it's best. The Lakers got beat by the Kings and nearly lost to them twice. Are the Kings, a disastrous mess of a team, a gimmick as well?

Whatever.

It's nothing new. It's a style that can be effective in the regular season when teams can't prepare for it but in the playoffs it's a whole different story.

Phil Jackson called us a "speedball" team. Somehow, that doesn't shock me.

"Gimmick team"? Eh, it's an improvement over what they were calling us last year.

Gimmick team or not, the team *is* better. I don't disagree that the Knicks are a gimmick team... makes sense to push the pace and get some high scores while the team is rebuilding. Keep fan interest high. Even if it is a gimmick, at least it is a gimmick the Knicks excel at. So, whatever.

I thought Jackson liked our coach's style or did the media run with it not realizing underneath it all Jackson is all about subliminals and sending messages. When someone laughs giving a compliment or makes reference to a professional scheme as Speedball you have to wonder about his sincerity.

Not to mention our coach and Jackson have exchanged words in the past. I'm not sure the level of respect is 100% there from both sides. I remember our coach taking offense to Jackson when he decided to call a late timeout in a regular season game, in which the Lakers were blowing the Suns out to draw up a play. Our coach motioned and said to him "We'll see you 3 more times" and threw in a couple of dirty words.

I don't think Jackson feels highly of our coach personally.

does it really matter what the LA Times or Phil Jackson calls our team? we ain't no championship contenders, not by a long shot... everyone sees the improvement & the Knicks are no longer a laughing stock when they come in to anyone's house... that's good enough for now... just need to keep focused on improving this team & then maybe some day you'll get the "this team's a legit contender" comments from other teams & newspapers... right now we don't deserve those comments.

uh oh, we're being upgraded from being dismissed as a complete joke, to people trying to hate. Once that turncoat Phil Jackson, who went from NY cult favorite to the biggest NY hater in the world, takes notice you know we might be on the right track.

If your pissed over the quote then your buying into the WWF type hype.

Coaches all get pissy on the court but they are tight and respectful off it.

Jax got 9 rings. NObody liked Auerbach, and IM sure Phil got his haters also. He is the greatest coach of this generation.

Jax from where he sits can call us speedball and thats cool. IN a way he is right. We play lousy defense and have hoist 3's to succeed. DLee is our center and our go to guy is a 5-7' freak of nature.

BUT, the team is improving, and speedball is better than IsiahSulkBall so its progress.

THe Lakers can afford to be smug. They win and have a history behind them.

I love MDA, but when Jackson said wtf is wrong with you, I started hysterically laughing. Thanks for posting that, I needed a laugh.

.

I suppose it doesn't matter what JAX thinks, but it was interesting to me because I had never thought about us as that. Gimmicks don't last, and gimmicks don't win; I really don't feel that we're a gimmick team, MDA is doing something very real here that I think will bring us success this season and in the future.

I would agree in fact I think I used the term here in the forum. For me the best thing to do is love'em from a distance, cause I don't agree that we can win big time this way.

Thanks for giving the visual of what I was referring to. Our coach can be such a little Italian Diva. Phil is about as overrated as they come but he one ups him something fierce here. You can't take Phil seriously when talking about our team.

Phil is over rated? He got more rings (11) than fingers!

He got 6 rings with Jordan-Pippen and role players
3 with Kobe and shaq and role players.
He won with Rick Fox as his 3. He won with Bill Wennington, WIll Purdue, Luke Longley, Paxton, Kerr, Armstrong, and Rodman. He made Jordan into Jordan. Jordan was a smaller version of Dominique Wilkins until Jax got him to believe the triangle.

Of course he is over rated, he is a coaching GOD!

He is overrated. Jordan was not only the greatest player of all time, but the de facto coach of that team. And the rest of the rings happened when he had by far and way the two best players in the league and arguably the most dominant big man of all time.

Good motivator, good strategist, but c'mon. Kobe, Shaq, Pippen, Jordan? He hasnt won jack when he didnt have an extreme talent advantage over the rest of the league.

I used to think exactly the same thing, but he's good. He won 50 games the year Jordan left with Pippen and Kujo and probably would have beaten the Knicks in the playoff if not for the Hubert Davis phantom call.

I think the # of titles he's won is overrated. I dont think he's accomplished much more than Riley, Sloan, Pop or even guys like DMA, Flip, Nellie, etc etc because he's been blessed to have probably the best two pairs of players to ever play. Shaq/Kobe, Jordan Pippin... were there any better? I guess Magic/Kareem? Eisley and Anderson?
