CLEVELAND - Cuttino Mobley is strongly mulling a medical retirement because of an enlarged heart condition and could make the announcement tomorrow, according to a person familiar with the situation.

...If Mobley, obtained in the Zach Randolph trade from the Clippers, retires, it would free open a roster spot and save the Knicks about 75 percent of the $18. 9 million left on his pact because of insurance.

Roster spot opens up. We need a PG in the worse way. Honestly, Walsh should have tried to swap in Roberson or someone else for Collins when Cuttino's physical failed.

I hope we can luck out and find a decent PG. I am sick of watching teams like G State discover great cheap talent like Anthony Morrow.

This is false. It is written by Marc Berman.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

I find it hard to believe this guy was playing for the Clippers but now wants to retire. This report is probably bs.

Sounds like BS to me. The same beat writer also reports that Marbury wants to play. Now I know what the problem is, MDA needs to let Berman know when he wants Marbury to play. Then Berman can tell Marbury to suit up. Here's a big tip for Marbles...if you want to play TELL YOUR COACH.

could be that they found his prior condition had deteriorated? That's possible, no?

I mean, if it were the same I would have to believe the Mobley would just sign an extended waiver as he had done in the past.

Please dont tell me we are serious about signing Houston. There are better, younger options in the D league (Marcus Williams) or sitting on the ends of benches (Almond, etc)

The Knicks may be angling for disabled player exception for Mobley. Interesting thing is there are 2 time frames that the exception can be used.

If the player is disabled between July 1 and November 30 you get 45 days to use the exception.

If the player is disabled between December 1 and June 30, then the team has until October 1st.

This could be the reason for all the tests and delays.

The excpetion can be used to sign a single player, or to take back more $ in a trade.

This is Due Dilligence for knicks and Cat.

The guy got a bad ticker and he is being smart to see if anything has happend that might have gotten worse. Not stupid by any means. Knicks insurance needs to also get this guy proper condition before rendering an opinion.

The guy will get his money in anyevent.

If he has to retire knicks might get some relief in 12 months against the cap. But not this summer.

Lets hope the guy is ok.

not saying he does'nt have a heart condition, but he could sign a waiver like he did last time. maybe donnie said "no no now cat you don't have to do that. it's your health we're dealing w/here. plus I think I can convince jimmie d to hook you up w/a cool mil AND we can put you up in a quaint little 3acre estate upstate while you collect yo dough".

My guess is his problem is called LVH. It can slowly get worse over time and it has to do with the left ventricle becoming bigger/thicker through the walls and can slowly diminish blood flow. You can have LVH and have normal blood flow[thus allowing the player to play as long as he signs a waiver against the condition] but it's possible over time it can become worse--especially with the demands from basketball. If it is LVH and it hasnt become worse--it's still a problem that no cardiologist could ignore even with no symptoms and regular blood flow.

If this is the case (that Mobley's heart is no worse), Walsh has 2 options: Have Mobley sign the waiver again or sign a D-Leaguer or trade the injury exception for a 2-guard. Which would you do?

You should unlock the other thread Martin, what I have going is a whole new take on the Mobley situation, about how the Knicks are doing Mobley Dirty, not a generic discussion!

Well the Rangers just lost their draft pick, Alexei Cherepanov, to a heart condition this year r.i.p.....maybe the MSG brass wants to completely make sure the dude is healthy enough to play. Maybe the guy's health is really in trouble. I hope the guy is alright and can continue his career.

We'll find out soon enough.

I agreed with whoever posted that the condition got worse and Walsh didnt know until the physicals. The most important thing is that mobley does what he hasta do to have a good life. I had mobley in my fantasy league and dropped him for a free agent so i really dont think hes playing this year. GOOD LUCK CAT!!

Why is it so hard for people to imagine that a heart condition that he had from the beginning and signed a waiver to play through it has gotten worse in a way that its recommended not to play anymore and the Knicks may be doing something positive here? Have we bought all the media crap so much that we always think the Knicks have something sinister behind the scenes going on? I mean, its easier to think that the Knicks are doing Mobley a dirty one instead of helping him and making sure he is healthy?

We need a guard and I think Walsh did the trade because he thought the team could still compete with Al, Tim and Cuttino and he probably was right, but given what happened to the Rangers draft pick and the seriousness of a heart condition Walsh wants to investigate it to the end. I mean, any responsible manager will look for their employees' safety first and Walsh may very well do this.

I have never ever liked Cuttino Mobley, and I never really wanted to see him a Knick.

However, I think the team, Walsh in specific is doing him dirty.

Walsh makes 2 huge trades in one day then reportedly acts like he didn't know that Mobley had a heart condition and tries to get more from the clippers. I think that is buyer's remorse.

Then it seems like he/the Knicks are doing all they can do to not let him suit up. Mobley already signed a waiver in Houston. He's been playing for 11 years. He is a man and it is his life.

I don't believe that this heart issue was news to Walsh when Mobley took his physical. I feel like they are toying with this man's career and life to save some money. In addition, he can actually help this team regardless of the fact that he is no great player. They are sabotaging his career. How can this be the right way to behave?

Is there something I am not getting here?

This leaves me with a very bad taste...
