Should we keep this guy?

His numbers after the Zach Randolph trade are indicating that he would command upward of 10 million per year. But is he really worth it? Lee is a top 5 rebounder in the NBA. I would love to see anyone challenge that fact. With increased playing time his rebounds have increased significantly. He is also a capable scorer. He is averaging 20 pts a game since the trade. He has a nice jumper that he constantly works on and you can see it developing and he shoots FT's at a solid clip.
But his defense is piss poor and he doesn't block any shots. He is also a above average passer for a big man.

I would love to see Lee resigned, but at what cost? Maybe he comes here for a discounted price, knowing that if he did that he would be a instant hero and would give the team a chance to sign TWO stars (lebron + ?). He would likely be a pivotal piece in a championship team and then get his big contract later in his career. But if he doesn't do that is he really worth 10 million dollars? He is a great rebounder, but you can find plenty of those. He is a horrible defender, and you can find plenty of those. I just don't know what is going to happen with Dlee and he is one of my fav knicks and I dont want him to leave. But what is it going to cost us to keep him?

DLee needs a pass first PG that can run the pick-and-roll. We have that now. I hope we sign him for a cap friendly contract.

His numbers look like Zach, but he doesn't impact the game like a low post scorer like Zach can. You can dump the ball into Zach and get out of the way and Zach will get his numbers.

Lee needs to be set up to score whether its off penetration by the pg or Lee getting put backs. Not knocking Lee, but thats not a 10 million dollar a year player in my book. Would love to keep him because he is a piece we would need eventually when we are piecing together a championship team. But not at 10 million plus.

lee is a hustle player. someone has to grab a rebound. seriously, he plays zero defense, not because he doesnt want to, but he's just not good at that. he can run and dunk, but his midrange sucks, and he doesnt command double teams.

the only way i'd resign D Lee to that extension is if we can dump Curry & Fishlips' contracts for ones that expire before 2010... otherwise u should look to trade him while his value is at its peak... we almost got a #5 overall pick for him in the offseason, there's no reason to hold onto this guy if u can get that type of value.

No one is going to give you fair trade value for Lee if they cant resign him.

Lee and Nate's signings are most assuredly tied to Jeffries and Curry. If we can move one, we can resign one. If we move two, we can resign two.

The only other possibility is to sign them for one year, and then resign them after the two Max deals we're looking to sign.

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

that would be ideal but if u were D Lee or Nate u would never agree to something like that, no matter what they promised you under the table... u take the money when u can get it cuz u never know what kind of injuries u might suffer tomorrow, much less next season... both those guys have done everything that's been asked of them ever since they were drafted & have worked hard on improving their skills... they deserve to reap the rewards in a new contract... if the Knicks can't make the moves they need to so we can re-sign these guys, then they need to go somewhere that can accomodate them.

i really hope Donnie can pull off another miracle & dump Curry & Fishlips this year.

Yes they have shouldered the load and been unselfish, gotta give them their due. But Lee still plays no defense and Nate is still undersized, he wont have those insane ability to jump for ever. I wouldnt mind keeping Nate, but Lee may be too much of a luxury for this team right now. We desperately need a big that can run and defend, we NEED CAMBY

hopefully we can dump Curry & JJ2 & draft Thabeet... that would negate alot of D Lee's defensive liability & we can enjoy the type of stuff he did last night & we'd have a better team in the long run for it... then in 2010 u can always look to use him in a S&T if you have to if things come to that... he's still going to be a desirable player even if he's making $10 mil per IMO.

If DLee is making 10 mil per year...I certainly hope it isn't in a Knick uniform...You guys are nuts if you think Lee is a 10 mil per year player...

Let the market dictate the price. He is an RFA.

i'll take the tradeoff of D Lee making 10 mil over Curry... i'd still look to trade him for a high 1st round pick if i can tho... i think there are guys u can draft who can replicate his skillset who will come much cheaper... but if we free up the space to re-sign him, i wouldn't mind it.

I doubt David Lee will get 10 mil, but he will be an extremely high demand at the 7-8 mil range. In fact, that coupled with his RFA status will make him a hot commodity on the sign and trade market as teams will likely sweeten their offers to make sure the Knicks don't match and so that they don't have to bid up the contract on Lee.. Knicks would be wise to let the market dictate here.

Some contracts for similar players

Reggie Evans - approximately $5M per
Luke Walton - approximately $5M per
Darko - approximately $7M per
Kendrick Perkins - approximately $4M per
Kurt Thomas - approximately $4M per
D Diop - approximately $6M per
Al Horford - approximately $6M per

Reggie Evans averages 4 points a game for his career and shoot 46 from the field and 50 from the line. He has never averged 10 rebounds for a season. Al Horford will be making about 13 million when his contract comes up.
