Knicks Frustration!!
Susan Is About To Catch A Case

via SLAM Online

It’s 10:34 and I just walked home from the Garden. The Knicks hosted the Cavs, and all the talk was about LeBron coming here in 2010. From the media in the press room, from the lady selling me my French fries, from the Whoo Hoo guy two rows behind me. (More about him later.)

As a Knicks fan for some years now, I’ve been in the Garden for my share of amazing things. Allow me a quick moment to reminisce…Starks dunking on Mike. Reggie’s 8 points in 11 seconds. LJ’s four-point play. Van Gundy holding onto Zo’s leg for dear life. Patrick standing on the scorer’s table. And Patrick standing center court as his number was retired. Those were and are great memories for me and Knicks fans everywhere. Which brings me to this letter, manifesto, whatever you want to call it.

Knicks fans…I am one of you. I sympathize with you. I feel your pain, too. But people, please, you need to chill. Stop celebrating like LeBron (or even DWade or Bosh) coming to the Knicks is a lock. Nothing is happening for two years. At least. TWO YEARS! Do you know what can happen in two years? Two years ago, Miami won the NBA Championship. See how things change?
Yes, I’ve been disappointed as a Knicks fan these last years. Yes, they haven’t done their best. Yes, front office debacles have put the spotlight on the higher ups rather than the team and made the franchise a complete embarrassment. But you know what? I don’t think it helps the guys who are on the team right now, playing in front of you right now, trying to win right now, to hear chants of “We Love LeBron” and “2010.” Walking to my seat, I saw a guy wearing a t-shirt he made himself that said “2010: Change we can believe in.” Clever, yes. But oh so wrong.

Player introductions….and the crowd goes wild…for LeBron. When he does his little powder thing (which he stole, yes, STOLE from KG, thank you very much), he takes extra long to pour the stuff into his hands. Then a big pause for dramatic effect. Then up in the air. Cue crowd to go wild again. These are not Knicks fans. These are not New York fans. The fans I grew up cheering with, booing Reggie Miller with, standing during timeouts and for entire 4th quarters with, they would not have cheered for someone on the other team. MJ got some cheers, sure, but he got a hell of a lot more boos.

And then, it happened. Finally. Some time during the second quarter. A real fan. “I hate you LeBron!” It comes up from behind me, the blue seats for those Garden fans in the know. At first, Khalid and I just laughed a little. But when he continued…“I hate you LeBron”….my heart grew all warm and fuzzy. And when the Knicks scored, he let out a “Whoo Hoo!” He cheered. For his team. Shocking, right? Every so often, someone would start changing “2010” or “We love LeBron” but thankfully it didn’t take to the whole arena. Trust me, the sound of entire The Garden chanting is awesome. It’s an amazing thing. It’s just been a long time since I heard it. And if I heard it with “We love LeBron,” I would have left that instant. Whoo Hoo Guy made me think, even for just a few minutes, that the attitude, the intensity, the passion was back in The Garden. Thanks, Whoo Hoo Guy.

That’s what this place needs. It needs its toughness back. It needs its fire back. Sorry, Knicks fans, but you need your balls back. Don’t cheer for the other team. Don’t chant against your team. You look dumb and sound even dumber. To the dude who screamed out “LeBron’s our MVP!” Really? Really? You are a moron.
The crowd went nuts for LeBron the whole night. And for those of you who think I’m a LeBron hater, it’s just not true. Quite the opposite. He’s an amazing athlete, amazing leader, might turn out to be the best ever, blah blah blah. To be able to watch someone of that level, with his knowledge and skill is a treat to be remembered forever. As a Knicks fan, would I love him on my team? Sure. But it’s, um, 2008. Fans, let me see a fight in the stands. Steal someone’s beer. Chant something about someone’s mother. Do something. Show everyone that we are still the greatest fans in the world.

And to the guys on the team…fellas, this goes out to you too. I’m by no means saying I know how to play in the NBA. But I do know a few things about basketball. LeBron gets a pass outside. You don’t let him dribble in, putting a half-ass body in his path. Knock the man down. Hard. He’s big. He’s strong. Trust me. He can take it. You don’t let him pull up for a 20-footer. Get your hand in his face. Yes, he’s an amazing player. Yes, he’ll probably hit the shot anyway. But do something, anything.

I first started watching the Knicks in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Mark Jackson. Hubert Davis. Marcus Camby. Patrick Ewing. Herb Williams. Charles Oakley. Derek Harper. Rolando Blackman. Latrell Sprewell. Rick Brunson. Chris Childs. Chris Dudley! John Starks. Allan Houston. Larry Johnson. Anthony Mason. Xavier McDaniel. Johnny Newman. Doc Rivers. Kurt Thomas. Gerald Wilkins. Those were my Knicks. Those are my Knicks. And I want to add some names to the list. Knicks fans, I know you feel me on this. So please, for the love of Red Holzman, start acting like Knicks fans.
Oh, and Darnell Jackson, Khalid says you owe him money.

I couldn't agree more with this. I sure hope we strike gold in 2010. But until Lebron is on my team, he can go... [fill in the blank, doesn't really matter to me]

I'll add to that free agency can backfire as much as anything else. It will be good to have but weve been dropping all of the eggs in one basket.

Ahhh so refreshing! Loved that article! Written by a real Knicks fan. And loved the way she wrote it. Reminded me of a very straightforward friend that I like a lot.

And another thing: this is exactly why right now Im really tired of the Lebron talk. Yeah, I would love the Knicks signing him in 2010 and all that. But watching the game last night I couldn't stop thinking about how much I want to see the Knicks compete out there. Last night it was sad as they barely cared to play with passion. But that was exactly what you could always count on when watching the Knicks. Passion, great defense, great team work. I wanna see that again even if we don't make the playoffs. I wanna see the other team struggling against us. And I think it can happen now.

Is Donnie dropping all his eggs in the Lebron basket, or are the fans? To me it's clear that Donnie is starting over(as we should do) and getting in position to compete for the top named free-agents in 2010(as we also should do). He now has 2 years to develop a team so taht if Lebron or others don't sign here, we have at least taken 2 steps forward. It's the fans that are "lebron or bust". The front office hasn't had time to get to step 2 yet.
I just hope that people will like me

The Plan is the same as every other team has that is not that good. If any of the big names leave their teams there will be lots of suitors. However, at least two, Detroit and NJ will already be very good teams that might only be a player away. The best thing about the Plan is that there is one. The Knicks have shown that they cannot build thru the draft because they are not capable of drafting well.

i think the guy who wrote this just likes to hear himself sound tough, much like a lot of posters on this forum... just because fans are cheering for guys like Lebron when they come to the garden doesn't mean they've switched allegiances & are now rooting against their team... that's about as moronic a notion as i've heard in a long time... it's OK to show ur respect & appreciation for someone w/that type of talent... Knick fans give Jordan a standing ovation all the time even after he cut our hearts out in some of the biggest games in our history... does that show that Knick fans got no balls or does it show we have an appreciation & respect for the game of basketball? i think it shows the latter.

That guy is a douchebag, plain and simple. Who the hell is he? We need our balls back? This franchise has been terrible for 8 years and in 2010 it will be 10. This isn't the 90's. The NBA isn't gritty anymore. It's a soft league. But besides that, this franchise needs a savior like LeBron. In the short and long term, that's what we need. Whether it be LeBron or anyone else, we need a guy like that. So forgive Knick fans for having some hope. Cheering for LeBron doesn't mean they lost their balls. It means they want something to believe in again. So this guy should get off his high horse and shut the hell up.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

Exactly!

Managment has to do whats best for the Knicks at the end of the day. Getting cap space for 2010 is whats best for the Knicks.

Fans might be the ones jumping the gun. If yelling for Lebron can help entice him to come here then I can't complain. We can worry about getting our balls back when Lebron is in a knicks uni.

We went through the era of having balls, but no championships. Now its time for the championships. We paid our dues.

The craw move was legit. Flawed talent for flawed talent with a year less on the contract.

The Zach move was tough because it really makes it hard for this team to even stay in games.

Had to be done I suppose.

Most striking thing to come out of this is that we need Nate in order to function as a competitive team. We need to Move Curry and or Jeffries so that we can lock up Nate. He may have more value here than anywhere else and the mid-level might be too much for him, but it doesn't matter. He fits this team better than any other player and we've got to keep him regardless of the 2010 crap.

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Frankly I think the person that wrote this is an ******* and has no concept of why fans are actually on board with what's happening here.

We are supposed to go wild when Scott Layden signs Houston for 50 million more than he's worth or when we trade a young center and a draft selection for a power foward coming off of knee surgery to add to Thomas, Spoon and Harrington? Or are we supposed to maintain our toughness as fans after watching a GM come in here fire 3 coaches and bring in Marbury, Rose, Francis and Taylor, character guys you see next to you at church on Sunday. Or watch as an owner approves trade after trade, bringing in max contracts to secure late round picks only to use them on second round talent....

Frankly Jamal Crawford sucks he is shooting 35% with the warriors who are off to an 0-3 start after acquiring him a player isiah spent 21 extra million to bring in by adding jyd in the trade, or a power foward that puts up numbers and doesn't get you to the playoffs. If we had stuck to this plan with ewing and had a smart gm in here we would have been in the playoffs, if isiah didn't trade lottery cornerstones away for the 10th man on the team maybe we would already have assets in place that would be rounding into championship form by 2010.

But my balls are intact, because even if the plan is two years away, for the first time in 7 years there is a plan. We can keep falling short of the playoffs or limb into them or we can ask why the knicks in this market don't have a championship since 1970.

mythfaze. We're supposed to keep it cool and you have to go and bring all this up? Your feeding BRIGGS the 'no chance in hell' attitude

Lebron James can do whatever the hell he wants to. If he wants to come to New York, then what the hell is wrong with that? I don't understand some fans who claim to be Knick fans. I mean who the hell are you sticking up for?

I love that piece from Slam. When Jordan was doing his retirement rounds, I said to my friends "wow, I wish I got to appreciate his game, I was too blinded by hate."

Because to me, I just hated Jordan... also helped that my sister was a bandwagon Bulls fan at the time. I knew he was great, but he just showed up my team too much, and I hated him! I only got to appreciate him when he was no longer the player he was before and on the way out.

Sort of like Reggie Miller that last year... I got a bit wistful in that last season of his, but he's an annoying announcer so the hate returned. :P

I didn't hate Olajuwon though even though he took Pat's trophies for whatever reason.

I think I've matured a bit as a fan and I'm not just a Knicks fanboy, but trying to be a fan of the game itself. Or maybe I've lost my balls, because if I was there, I think I might have been cheering for LeBron too. Which just shows how far we've fallen... I'm going to ignore all the slick ****e this guy has been saying about the Knicks and go "LeBron, I love you!" like a lame??? Where's our pride?

Homegirl from Slam has me checking myself.
