Not be a doomsayer, but really, why is Lebron leaving Cleveland. They just upgraded their roster with Mo Williams and look like they have a damn good chance of winning a championship. Assuming they can win one before 2010, why would LeBron leave. The Knicks are going to have Chandler, DG, Nate, and maybe Lee, plus whoever we pick up in 2009. While that is some talent, that really is not enough talent to entice Lebron from a team that won a championship. We just traded a 20/10 scorer, who was playing the best basketball of his career, for essentially nothing. No draft picks, no young prospects, nothing. This seems an awful like the Orlando plan about 9 years ago, when they thought they would get Tim Duncan and it did not work. If we miss out on LeBron we are going to have to overpay to get some free agents in. Walsh is really putting all his eggs in one basket at this point and he is not even acquiring draft picks as a backup plan. BAsically, what bothers me the most about these moves is that no draft picks were involved. Even if we only picked up second rounders, that would have been something we could have parlayed into maybe a better spot in the draft.
If the Knicks have enough cap space to sign two max players, why wouldn't Lebron come here with a Bosh or Wade or Stoudemire?
A lineup of Lebron Bosh Charlie Brown Scooby Doo & Popa Smurf is a better lineup than anything on Cleveland. Just having the space available for Lebron and an Olympic teamate should be appealing enough.
Two reasons: (a) we still need a PG, unless you think Duhon and Nate can lead a team to a championship; and (b) we still need a center, unless we get AMare, who can probably play center. Lebron gives you a SF and Bosh gives you a PF, but it is a longshot to get both. We have CHandler who I expect will be at a Caron Butler level by then and we may still have Lee and Nate as solid bench players, but we still are going to need a pg and a center and we have no draft picks to get those players unless we luck up in 2009.
Of course we would still need pieces, but the if you can start your team with a foundation of Lebron and Bosh, for crying out loud thats a championship foundation. Once you have said player set in stone (or conrete to continue my foundation analogy) then you can overspend as the Knicks have proven to do in the past. But this time, you are overspending to find the final piece for a championship (pg. cneter etc...and BTW, with Lebron and Bosh, you dont necessarily need Chris Paul to run the point or Yao to man the post). All of a sudden, Wilson Chanlder looks that much better next to Lebron and Bosh. Duhon becomes better. With Lebron and Bosh, you can overspend for that center who only plays defense because he might mbe the final piece wee need to advance to the championship.
Think about it, how good would Rondo and Perkins look on this current team right now? Yet, next to KG, Pierce and Ray, they are apart of a championship starting lineup.
Don't forget, Steve Nash! I believe he is also a FA in 2010, and though he might be older, I bet he will still be effective and he would definitely come to NY for less money to play here for his old coach & possibly bring a title here.
