just think bro... if we suck bad enough this year & trade D Lee for another pick, we could have our very own Payton to Kemp type combo someday.

Posted by djsunyc: He was even more nastier than Amare. Kemp was breath taking. Amare kinda skips around the lane. Shawn Kemp drove the lane in a full horse like sprint as you can see in the clips. And the flaire? oh man! I'm Glad I witnessed those Gary to Shawn Kemp alley oops!!! In theat clip they even have that wicked double clutch dunk he had on Kenny Skywalker on the Knicks. Sweet Christmas. [Edited by - enyspree on 07-11-2008 11:32 AM] Subscribe to my Podcast https://youtube.com/c/DiehardknicksPodcast

DJ.....check how boring this clip is.....Amare is stiff and has to jump off 2 feet. Kemp was a freak and just a joy to have witnessed such an athlete.

Kemp was an athletic freak and a very very good player. I watched some NBA Hardwood classics and for a while there nobody could hang with him, he was a monster.
I'd still take Stoudemire over him. oohah Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

How Quickly we forget....Shawn Kemp was just as good a scorer. His crowning achievement was taking on the bulls in the finals basically alone cuz his team didnt show up. He was apart of those 2 historical defeats but technically so has Amare.
Anyway, If they were lined up in their primes I would take Shawn Kemp over Amare any day. Subscribe to my Podcast https://youtube.com/c/DiehardknicksPodcast

The Alton Lister dunk is Top 3 all-time, IMO. If only for Kemp's reaction afterwards.

Posted by EnySpree: +1. In the 96 finals, Kemp abused Rodman, one of the best defensive players to ever play in the game. I still remember his base line dunk with Rodman defending him. He took a one step dribble and dunk it over Rodman on the base line. It was an impossible dunk with no room. I don't like to play bad rookies , I like to play good rookies - Mike D'Antoni

Kemp was very good. He was also not even the best player on his own team, which was Gary Payton. The Hall of fame will back me up on that in a couple of years.
Use whatever standard you want to, in their primes or out of their primes (Which Stoudemire is only reaching now.), team success, defense, Stoudemire comes out ahead: http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/stoudam01.html http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/k/kempsh01.html What I remember about the Seattle/Chicago Finals is that Payton had to guard Jordan and Kemp had to guard nobody of consequence and neither were good enough to really threaten the Bulls. However, Payton held Jordan/Bulls to their worst offensive finals output. oohah Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

Wait a minute, oohah. So what are you going to say next that Ewing games against the Bulls were meaningless because he didn't have to guard anybody of consequence? Give me a break, Kemp went up against one of the best defensive players in the history of the NBA and abused him not to mention the times that Jackson had to double team him with Pippen and we are still having this conversation. The Glove's ability is another story. One of the best defensive players himself.

Amare is a great player but has to be one of the most overrated guys out there. He is unable to create points himself. He can't take anyone of the dribble unless he is in the post. You will never see him shake off a guy on the perimeter because he lacks ball handling skills. I agree 5 feet from the basket, he's amazing. Both he and Kemp are way below average defenders for their abilities.

Wait a minute, oohah. So what are you going to say next that Ewing games against the Bulls were meaningless because he didn't have to guard anybody of consequence? What I am saying is that Kemp had great games against one of the great defensive player in history (Though to be honest Rodman was not the same defensive presence he once was), while Payton had to play against Jordan and Pippen, both among the greatest players in NBA history including defense, and he had the added pressure of guarding the greatest offensive player in history. Even then Payton did more to uplift his team than Kemp did. I think if we had NBA hardwood classics on that we would see that while Kemp had his moments he had some situations where he did not rise like we all thought he should. Kemp and Amare are both very similar. Kemp was a flashier dunker, Amare more of a power dunker(Which is strange considering Kemps's power but we are talking about two hammers here.). Neither can/could create shots for themselves, but that really isn't their role anyway. I just think that Stoudemire has already reached Kemp's lvel, he got there faster, and will probably outstrip him when all is said and done, health willing. P.S. No it doesn't diminish Ewing's great games that he had to play sucky centers vs. the Bulls. If Ewing ever had a Payton to shoulder some of the load like Kemp did we would have had a championship. oohah [Edited by - oohah on 07-11-2008 1:07 PM] Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!
