Yeah I'm not too sure what the logic is on not extending him now.. Nate too for that matter. It's just going to cost more in the offseason, no?

I understand his logic. However, I think it is going to cost the Knicks alot more to sign him next summer. If DA gives Lee 33 mins a game, which might be the case if Curry does not get his act together, Lee will do about 18 pts, 9 rbs, and 2.5 asts a game this year. For a pf, that is pretty good and worth about $13-$14 mill. I am sure that we could sign Lee for $10-$11 mill now if walsh made a 5-6 year offer.

Lee could also be the next Troy Murphy.. minus the jump shot.

If someone signs him to an offer sheet you match. Or just wait for Lebron to get here

This is the direct result of Walsh screwing up the Zach trade offers last summer

It doesn't really make sense. I don't think anyone can predict what will happen in 2010 so I think not signing your best player to an extension because there is a 'chance' that you might be able to get a better player in 2 years is crazy. I am very frustrated with Walsh so far. I think he really messed up the draft. I think he should have bought out Marbury or at least handled him like the Pacers are handling Tinsley. Lee plays the game right and may be an all star by 2010. I think the positive press is about to stop and D'Antoni and Walsh are going to be dealing with a fan base, and media that is extremely frustrated and angry already at all the mistakes the franchise has made in the last decade.

I don't see the point not trading him during summer if you weren't going to extend him. So what's the plan wait until he has a breakout year and then offer him more money? BTW, where are all those posters who said don't worry this ain't Isiah, Lee will be signed?

Maybe this means that Walsh has interest in trading Lee before the end of this year, it'd be easier to trade him with his current contract instead of the high priced one he'd be looking for. You can pair him with any of the garbage contracts on our roster to get a pretty decent player in return.

Who knows.

maybe they wanna see if he'll still be knocking down jumpers in april before signing him. IMO thats the difference between 7 or 8 mill per and 10-12 mill per

To give anyone on this team a contract would be rewarding them for the 23, 33 and 23 wins the last three years. I think this is a good move let Lee and the team prove they are winners, whats the point of giving these guys contracts if they prove to be losers.

Besides I not gonna give Lee a contract and jepordize a possible 2010 free agent signing.

Yes, but the up side is 'we now have a ton of options'. Up until the end of last year we had virtually none. Something will happen and one way or the other, it will be good.

Lee wants to stay a Knick, so more than likely he will sign a fair deal, slightly to his liking.

Nate's contract is also up and like Lee, he too wants to stay a Knick and I think between the both of them, they will come to a fair contract to all three parties liking.

Walsh will stay the course of what he has already made clear about getting LeBron in a Knick uniform.

D'Antoni has expressed the need to earn the respect of the fans back again. Something I have been saying all along.

I think factoring in 'breaking up the big Zach contract' is gonna have to happen eventually, because that is the key thing that will either keep LeBron from coming to New York or opening the door for him.

Plus another important year will be under our young players belts and we will really see what we have going after this season.

D'Antoni has also made it clear that if you 'can't keep up, then you'll be left behind'. WHO'S THE BOSS NOW?? It certainly isn't the players and the attitudes have taken a back seat. Love it!
I'll never trust this' team again.

As much as I like Lee, he still hasn't been fully tested. HIs first year showed great promise, his second he was injured and his third was basically given to Zach. So this may be the first full test Lee has to prove he is worth the money. I too want to know if he is worth keeping for a long term. Because if he is injury prone, then that is something that has to be taken into consideration.

Like I said, he hasn't been fully tested.

business wise, there is no pressure to sign him now. just like the hawks didn't do with josh smith. you wait for someone to make an offer then match.

there's always a chance that a ben gordon situation could happen. but regardless, lee will get paid either next summer or in 2010.

^ Same here. I love DLee but it is just good business sense to let someone else set the price for DLee. I am sure Donnie will match any offer that is offered.

I disagree. Sorry, but keep in mind, no matter what happens the next two seasons, the ultimate goal is to free cap space and if LeBron is still on the table, if Lee is still a Knick then that will be great. BUT' if they are not, then we still have a lot of options and by then, I suspect there'd be a number of super stars that we can make a pitch for. But the most important thing is 'we will have the money this time'.

That's what makes this period exciting! Our home grown boy (Walsh) is fixing us up for a championship type team.
I'll never trust this' team again.

i don't mind the Knicks waiting to see how the season pans out before extending Lee or Nate personally... anything can happen & we still retain the rights to match any offers they get... i still say we shoulda dumped Zach when we had the chance tho... the money that woulda been freed up w/dumping Zach woulda given Walsh so much more flexibility to make roster decisions later not even withstanding the big names like Lebron, Wade, etc.

I don't know about that, but isiah would have signed him long ago, to a six year, 70 million dollar contract already. Lee's a good player, but that's just the going rate Layden and isiah would have put up already. I like the Walsh move and I think I understand what he is doing.

This will cost them about 15 million dollars because now he get to test the market. You could have gotten it done 5 for 47 now it will be 5 for 60. You can trade him because no one will take him without him signing a deal.
