Well, it feels like I made a thread like this about two years ago. Oh wait, I did! Well, anyway, I just accepted a position in Manhattan. It's a step up and just a great opportunity all around. Some crazy company (j/k) wants to make me a lead software developer, so of course, I jumped on it.

Now the question is I'm considering whether I should move a bit closer to Manhattan. Right now I'm in New Jersey and it's over an hour each way in travel. I was considering moving closer and was wondering if you guys had any recommendations for where a nice, safe area to rent might be that has reasonably good access to lower-ish Manhattan? Just trying to plot out where might be a good place to move, if I do decide to move. Any thoughts would be great.

Thanks in advance.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

where in manhattan will you work?

i live in queens - so that's an option as it's much much cheaper than living in the city. they fixed up some parts of brooklyn really nice also. whatever you do, do not move into the city or the hoboken area - you will be paying out the wazoo...

Edgewater's the nicest but rent is damn expensive... Hoboken's not as expensive & there's a fast ferry u can take to midtown right there, but the ferry's pretty damn expensive.

my buddy used to live in Weehawken & said the commute to Port Authority was only like 20 minutes... u might consider there... if u live along Boulevard East it's not a bad area at all, & u also get a view of the skyline which is pretty dope... just make sure u have ur own private parking space cuz finding street parking over there is a pain in the arse.

but if ur gonna be working in lower manhatten, then move to brooklyn might not be a bad idea either... rent might be expensive depending on which area of brooklyn ur in but u won't have to deal w/paying taxes for 2 different states.

don't even think about Staten Island cuz the commute's gonna take u at least an hour & a half each way.

It's not too far from Union Square. Yeah, I definitely wouldn't move into Manhattan, the driving is ridiculous. Brooklyn is interesting, but I'm not familiar with Brooklyn at all, so not sure what the nicer areas with good transportation are. Queens I'm not terribly familiar with either. A few people suggested Hoboken, but it sounds a little bit more crowded than I'm looking for.

Hmmm I hear you. Wish I was more familiar with these areas. Sounds like there's options, at least.

Brooklyn Heights is nice right by the bridge, but very expensive... Carroll Gardens is cleaning up nicely these days too, not too far a commute to the city... my dad used to have a store on Henry St & it's pretty much an old Italian family neighborhood... ain't nobody gonna mess with u over there.

as for living in Manhatten, if u do that u don't need a car to begin with, so u can save money on car payments & insurance to offset some of the rent increase... just a thought.

Hmmm I hear you. Wish I was more familiar with these areas. Sounds like there's options, at least.

Check out Weehawken and points north. Get on the 165 or the 166 (at Port Authority) and ride it for like 15 minutes - maybe as far as 79th street or so - then get off and walk around. See what you think. The areas right along the river are nice, and you can get a great view of Manhattan. Inland it can get a bit funky, but it doesn't really seem dangerous. There's also a couple of ferrys to Manhattan, but they're probably expensive. Note that the commute is usually like 20 minutes, but subject to Lincoln tunnel traffic. I've never tried to go or come during rush hour,

I don't live in the area myself, but I visit often. If my girlfriend ever kicks me out, I might head over there.

Staten Island is a pretty boring place, but possibly an option if you work downtown. The ferry is like 20 minutes to half an hour. Not bad if your office is right there.

my old studio on 12th & 3rd cost me $1250 a month, so if u factor in convenience factor, taxes, toll fees, bus fare, etc., then it might not be such a bad idea to move close to ur job.

yeah but the wait for a ferry almost always lasts at least 10-20 minutes, or an hour if you're travelling at late hours... & then you gotta catch another train or bus to get from the ferry station to whereever u live, which takes another 30-40 minutes or so... believe me, avoid Staten Island at all costs... i lived there almost my whole life & look how i turned out... bitter & angry. lol!

I'll take the studio in the East Village for $1250. Thanks.

edgewater and weehawken are close...so is union city. but that 20 min commute is to get to port authority, which is on 42nd street. from there, you will have to take a subway train and walk which will take another 15-20 mins. only reason i discourage jersey is b/c you have to deal with lincoln tunnel drama. if you live in queens or brooklyn, you got subway trains that don't have to deal with car traffic. you may get touched by a bum but after a while, you start liking it...

yeah, it was actually a great deal considering the area, but that was about 4 years ago so prices have probably gone up since then... i think u have to figure on at least $1500 for any decent studio in any decent area of manhatten these days, no?

Solace, I suggest you find a girlfriend who lives in a rent stabilized apartment in Manhattan. That worked for me.

LOL. I don't think my girlfriend would approve... unless BBJ's girlfriend is hot, then maybe.

Hmm. I think there *might* be other single women with rent stabilized apartments in NY, but then again....

TMS, my dad lives in Caroll gardens and I used to drive my sister in from there to lower Manhatten all the time. Caroll gardens isn't far from Manhatten in any way shape or form. Just about a 20-30 minute trip usually.

It's a nice place too now. No clue what the expenses are though. If it's not terribly expensive there, you should consider going there.

Congrats Solace.

yeah i know, my dad's store was right there... it's a quiet area & seems like a lot more young professionals are relocating there these days.
