Far from it being his fault(toxicbury), but Steve and Barry's is on the verge of going under. I remember years ago they did a study of all of the companies Jordan endorsed and how the stock faired and it was pretty impressive.

ToxicBury, or AntiMidasTouchBury seems to deflate all he touches these days.

NEW YORK -
A bankruptcy firm on Tuesday confirmed it is working with apparel retailer Steve & Barry's LLC to negotiate with its lenders and review strategic alternatives.

The privately held company's apparent financial difficulties are the latest indication of the increasingly hostile environment for retailers.

Bankruptcy attorney Harvey Miller said his partner Lori Fife at law firm Weil Gotshal & Manges LLP is advising the company as it negotiates with lenders and reviews alternatives.

The Port Washington, N.Y.-based retailer had no comment.

Steve & Barry's, which operates more than 200 stores, made a name for itself in recent years by keeping all of its clothing and accessories priced below $19.98, proliferating rapidly and collaborating on products with big-name celebrities and athletes such as tennis star Venus Williams, actress Sarah Jessica Parker and basketball player Stephon Marbury.

However, experts say it is likely the company's rapid expansion and low price points that lead to its current difficulties as the retail environment steadily worsened.

Consumers have cut back on discretionary spending as food and gas prices rise, home values decline and the credit market tightens. The weak operating environment has already caused companies including home-furnishing retailer Linens 'n Things, gift catalog and online retailer Lillian Vernon and gadget-seller The Sharper Image to file for bankruptcy protection.

Michael Imber, director at Grant Thornton LLC in New York and part of its corporate advisory and restructuring services practice, said the difficult environment likely worsened Steve & Barry's woes.

"A weak environment is absolutely a catalyst for what's going on here," he said. "The price points for Steve & Barry's are relatively modest, but people are still being tight with dollars."

He added that rapid expansion, as well as beefed-up inventory to stock its quickly growing store base, may have pressured margins.

"If you're carrying a lot of inventory, that ties up your cash," he said. "If it moves very slowly, you're not getting the kind of return on investment you'd like to have."

Michael Appel of Quest Turnaround Advisors, a turnaround management and advisory firm in Purchase, N.Y., said keeping costs down could have been an issue as well.

He said prices for footwear coming out of manufacturing hubs such as China have risen 5 to 15 percent, and apparel prices are likely rising as well.

"They may have not been able to increase prices as much as vendors, which increases pressure on margins."

Dan Ansell, a partner at Greenberg Traurig LLP and chairman of its real estate operations division, said Steve & Barry's apparent troubles - as well as other retailer's woes - should serve as a warning for landlords who might give tenants concessions to rent out a space in a mall.

Instead, they should practice "defensive leasing," to avoid being left in the lurch, he said.

"The appearance of runaway success is sometimes an illusion," he said. "Recent bankruptcy filings by companies that appear profitable on the surface highlight a need for landlords to have a coherent national strategy to prepare for and address tenant failures."

LOL @ anyone who bought any Starbury Gear. Worst Crap ever!

I notice I don't hear anybody talking about this movement anymore and what good it's doing for the Hood. I don't hear Marbury talking about it. I don't hear anything from Ben Wallace. That's right because it always was about Money.

Hopefully if Steve & Barry are going under Marbury takes his own money and invest in a venture fully supported by himself to help out the Hood.

Agreed. That would be a real charitable venture worthy of praise.

Or he could put up the money to help Steve & Barry recuperate their losses so they can continue to provide low economically priced product to lower income families. He's probably spending time along with the lenders to make sure all his cut from the Starbury Line are recuperated from Steve & Barry's.

He and Ben Wallace should hook up and make something happen for the ghettos.

I happen to like Steve & Barry's and in fact many parents that I know like the store and it's pricing policy. Between them and Walmart you can save some money on clothing. We just got 2 new stores here in Georgia where I live and we were glad to get the stores. NO matter what I feel about Steph, I want the company to pull thru this.

The clothes aren't bad for the price. I wear a lot of their stuff myself. I've got one kid in college and 2 more right behind so I totally identify with the concept.

ah. Definately a sad thing to happen, but why you find it so funny confuses me. Marbury donates a lot off the court, Hurricane Trina victims comes to mind of recent, but he does a lot of other things in the hood. I have no problem with him making money off of his name, even if he is trying to look like a humanitarian doing so. Is that really a crime? Let me ask you, what do you give to your hood? Are you as generous (proportionate to income that is) as marbury is? I am just asking, because I really am suprised that you find it funny that a business is going bankrupt that has provided affordable clothing to many middle to lower income families.. Not trying to sound self righteous here, but just confused on why you seem so thrilled this happened?

People made a bigger deal out of this than what it should have been. I already spoke on what Marbury could do to help the situation out with Steve & Barry. Personally I do community service every month free of charge and my daily job I assist in helping kids in getting an education. I don't make 1/100 of what Marbury makes so it's much more difficult for me to give in ways that he has. But the Steve & Barry venture separate from his other philanthropic givings was not all that some made it cracked up to be.

Not really Steve & Barry were already providing low economical goods to a targeted market well before Marbury got in on it. As has been stated Marbury ran out of endorsement opportunities from the Big Name Corporations and latched on to a Franchise who could support his name for what appears to be a short period of time. It was a smart business move by Marbury, not Philanthropic. He got a cut from sales and then went out and tried to hire other athletes to endorse the Brand to make more money. Or you could say Steve & Barry Solicited for his name to advertise their store line. When Marbury has no other endorsers at his doorstep of course such an offer seemed lucrative while at the same time makes him look good in the public eye. I'll give him credit for passing out kicks in the hood and things of that nature. But Steve & Barry stores weren't located in the ghettos, mainly in the nicer area of the inner cities. Really what it gets down to is opportunity or lack thereof and being Less Greedy than other athletes.

so again, I ask, what makes it so funny that this company that provides low cost goods is now going bankrupt? Is it the fact that you dislike marbury so much you find it funny? I just don't get it... And really you don't have to open stores in the ghettos to support the hood, it is not like they put the stores on park avenue or in beverly hills. If it is accesable to the "hood" the prices are affordable, then a service is done.. Marbury has the right to make a dollar and really you don't know if he had no other endorsement opportunities, to assume that and then post it as a fact is wrong..... Just admit, you have an ax to grind with marbury, that is cool, but to wish bad on people who's only crime is not saving your team from the gutter is just wrong...... off the court, marbury does a lot of good things, and as you call it, if he is being less greedy than most, than that should be commended....

The movement made him out to be a martyr type figure which the self centered cheat on his wife sulking professional is not.

His philithrapic endevors always have an air to them as if they were for public relations purpose than being genuine.

He is a clown, but I think his philanthropic endeavors are genuine, I think at times he comes off ****y, cookly and just flat out silly a lot of the times, but I do think they are sincere. In the end, I don't think he is a bad guy off the court, but as you said, he is a clown, and really how many of these pro athletes who we call " great " guys have cheated on teir wives and are self centered. A lot of them. Not condoning their actions, but marbury is no different than most of these guys and not as bad as people make him out to be.. I think, as you said, he is just a clown and doesn't know how to be anything else, no matter how hard he tries...

This is disappointing, but not terribly shocking. They took a nutcase on as their key marketing piece. Marbury cost them millions and millions because he's an absolute loser and most people have realized it by now. Not to mention that the shoes were utter garbage from what I was told. Steve and Barry's would've been far better off had they made an attempt to make higher quality products and had gone for someone sane.

It's a shame that others have to take the fall for Barfbury being such a loser.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Laird Hamilton, Amanda Bynes, and Sara Jessica Parker all have similar type deals with Steve and Barry's besides Big Ben and Starbury.

None of them are cannonized for being anything but involved as designers of low cost price merchandise. Same model as "the movement" and they have had "tours" to promote, but not as "saviors of the poor".

There is no doubt that the theme of "socially reposneable" for marketing to urban market was a good thing, but it conflicts with Starbury who has a history of excess spending and lavish excess. His benevelant activities are usually pretty orchestrated media events to help his image.

Like I said, he is not a bad guy and maybe his heart is in the right place. Too bad his brain isn't.

But none of them sell items that are marketed to lower class inner city kids at these high prices they can't really afford. The appeal was that marbury sold items that are generally very expensive in price at a much lower cost, available to kids in the inner city who normally buy these items... I mean how many lower class family are looking for items from sara Jessica parker? come on man, the low income families don't associate themselves with these types of people, but marbury is one of them, his items, like most athletes are what these inner city kids want, and unlike Nike and Reebok, marbury decided to make his affordable, although he is a nutcase, in the retail sporting goods world I am sure marbury carries a lot more clout than sara jessica parker, he could have made more money, easily, he chose another way, I find that Ok.... I have no problem with that...

No Marbury attached his name to a product that has similar quality as the best/or comparable pair of kicks you can get at Wal-Mart, Payless Shoes Store, Famous Footwear. Marbury didn't provide the lower income families with a shoe as high of quality as say a shoe that would retail for $80.00 normally. Instead he put his name on a cheap product in which these lower income families will have to return back to the store in the very near future to replace the kicks they purchased because they SUCK! Which in turn really doesn't save them any money in the long run. Matter of fact you had many supposed lower income individuals buying out the store when supposedly they don't have the money to begin with. And1 dropped Marbury he didn't really have any other alternatives.

Sam Walton where is his praise what about Senator Kohl where is his praise?

As I said TKF I'd like to think Marbury would front Steve & Barry money for their losses so they don't have to start closing up shop across the States. Less Steve & Barry stores, less opportunities for the lower income families to take advantage of.

Remember Marbury said it would be a MOVEMENT!
