All before Gall-Atari and I'd wager he was probably projected around this spot on most other teams Mocks/Board in the league.

Well hey look. I know we're all experts here but we're simply not the ones running things. Regardless of their plan it's going to take Walsh and DAntoni quite some time to get us heading in not only the right direction but a new direction. We're talking a minimum of a season and a half.
They have a vision. They're immediately on the same page regarding that vision. They're moving forward with it.
With Gallinari he has the family friendship ties, he suits DAntoni's style, and he was not selected to be an immediate saviour nor to be marketed as a foundation stone. He is merely a piece that fits the long term puzzle and it just so happened he came first.
Given the state of the team there was no home run at #6. There was no clear cut chance to dump a contract that night. So Gallinari fits the long term plan as a piece of the puzzle and they took him.
I think as fans we all need to back away from the home run scenarios that have plagued the team for 7+ seasons. It's not going to happen and there's no reason to get all riled up over one single move believing we blew some sort of chance to hit a home run. The home run just isn't there.
As the team is shaped for all we know Gallinari fits perfectly for the final product which is a couple of seasons away. Again, he just happened to come first.
It's a basketball team not a skyscraper. We don't have to pour the foundation first. No harm in acquiring the paint now and setting it aside. When you see a piece that fits you get it and that's what they have done here.
