"The Knicks are feeling UCLA 6-foot-3 sophomore point guard Russell Westbrook could be both an engine and stopper. The athletic, rugged guard has seen his stock explode since pre-draft workouts began earlier this month.

With Arizona guard Jerryd Bayless starting to fall off the Knicks' radar, the Knicks are hoping O.J. Mayo falls to six. But that is unlikely. As such, Westbrook has emerged as a strong candidate for the Knicks, if he's even still there.

Eric Gordon, more a shooting guard, is also a consideration, especially if Westbrook isn't there, and his handlers are trying to steer him to New York. Forward Danilo Gallinari, the 19-year-old Italian Stallion, is still being linked to the Knicks in some circles but may be too much of a reach and project at six."

There are rumblings Seattle, which was linked to Bayless, may opt for Westbrook instead. Indeed, one personnel director told The Post Bayless may sink the most Thursday night.

while Alexander is my first choice I would have to be very happy with Westbrook, especially considering our coaching staff. He's prob a bench player in year one anyway. Westbrook will have a pretty big learning curve to becoming an NBA PG, but he's got that motor intensity that I like about Alexander. Westbrook might be like a Banks on D and Barbosa on O... but I certainly see him as a core rotation guy no matter what role he settles into.

If that's the case then he'll be glued to the bench half the time.

I go back and forth on Westbrook. Its hard to get a good read on him. Sometimes I see a more athletic version of Rondo, but then I remember, Rondo had more game experience at the point than Westbrook has at this point. Rondo ran the point for the famed OakHill Academy. And two years at Kentucky.

Is Westbrook that much better than Keyon Dooling & Antonio Daniels coming out of college? All three are about 6'3 190 and are very athletic. Daniels like Westbrook was noted for their defense coming out of college and none of them were considered pure point guards.

He's going to come off the bench first year anyway. He's good but he's not CP3

On NBATV they made it sound like Westbrook is a nice selection with great upside but may be a little overhyped right now. He may be a bench player his first yr was what they said.

I can be O.K. with this pic but it doesn't do anything for me overall if we walk out of this draft with Westbrook and no other transactions take place. I'm sticking to my guns I still think this Westbrook is being used as a bargaining chip.

No matter what we do with the #6 pick, we have to add some latter picks and build a core of interior defense.

I don't like Tony Parker, and I don't want him for this team.
I want a better distributor and orchestrator.

I think he has the same abilities as far as speed with the ball and ability to finish at the rim (something that clearly seperates him from the Rondo comparison IMO). It took time and tough love for Tony to mature into the lead guard role. It took time for him to develop a reliable 18 footer to go along with his explosive first step.

I think Russell's got the game to develop like Parker did if a coach wants him to develop in that direction.

The best comparison I've heard for Westbrook would be Alvin Robertson. I think it was Briggs who made it. I'd sign up for that right now, especially if the alternatives are Gilbert Arenas (Bayless) or Ben Gordon (Eric Gordon). Or even worse, big foreign bust Gallinari.

He's Italian. What more do you need to know?

I expect Gallinari to make as big a contribution to the Knicks as Frederic Weis & Milos Vujanic did.
