New York Knickerbockers President of Basketball Operations Donnie Walsh announced today that Phil Weber and Dan D’Antoni have been hired as assistant coaches. In addition, Herb Williams has been retained to complete the coaching staff on the bench.

"We have three top quality assistant coaches that will be great assets as we work towards our goal of bringing winning basketball back to New York," Walsh said. "Phil and Dan enjoyed tremendous success with Coach D’Antoni in Phoenix, while Herb has been a great part of our franchise for many years."

Weber joins the Knicks after nine seasons as an assistant coach in Phoenix, which included 4½ seasons as D’Antoni’s assistant. The Northport, NY native’s specialty is in skill and player development. He co-founded an academy for player development in Los Angeles with current Nets General Manager Kiki Vandeweghe. After leading Long Island Lutheran HS to a state championship, Weber played for Jim Valvano at North Carolina State. He served as an assistant coach at the University of Florida, Chaminade University and Iona College before joining the Suns in September of 1999.

Dan D’Antoni spent the last three seasons as an assistant under Mike D’Antoni in Phoenix. The Mullens, WV native played college basketball at Marshall University and began coaching as a senior when he guided the school’s freshman team that featured his younger brother. Following school, D’Antoni embarked on a 30-year high school coaching career in South Carolina where he founded the Beach Ball Classic, one of the most prestigious high school tournaments in the country that has showcased such talents as Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Vince Carter and Jason Kidd.

Williams will enter his eighth season on New York’s bench, following a distinguished 18-year NBA career.

Where's the defensive coach?

The guy with the big "D" to go with the fense might as well put it in mothballs. A big "O" would be more appropriate. So much for NY basketball fans being more savvy than in other towns. I can hear those chants for "O"-"FFENSE" already.

Herb is like a leech that never stops sucking.

I thought we would have more than 3 assistants, especially since I don't even consider Herb a coach.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

I like the idea of more coaches. Dallas has employed the same tactic.

I have a feeling this team will remian a total disaster area

were going to put way to much emphasis on removing a player and forgetting the team scks as is.

get rid of randolp get rid of curry bring in 5 6-3 players and lets see what we have--same record.

Why do you come to this conclusion when nothing has been done yet?

After 7 years of arse-kicking putting up the jab is a natural reaction. I'm a little concerned hiring a GM who is 68 and a coach[who did well no doubt about it] but had a perfect type of team for what he wants to run with an MVP at PG and all league players at the F. After watching Boston beat up the Lakers might bet is teams slowly morph back into the 90s mode with tougher style of play. If Im reading the tea leaves correctly we are putting way too much emphasis on trying to get rid of Zach at a high cost of assets--while forgetting the team scked anyway. I have a feeling they believe that with what we have here is better than it is--they have been doing that every year. Were lottery again--my bet. If I see otherwise I will politely apologize.

I'm not interested in your apology, I can see why, after about a decade's worth of futility, you would be skeptical in your optimism. That said, you have to at least give them a chance. Right? Dont get carried away by net rumors.

BTW, what does Walsh's age have to do with it? Dementia starting to set in or something once one hits 65?

Don't worry about the coaching staff. All of the high character guys on the team will follow Mike D's approach to discipline and defense by playing like men/professionals. I am sure this new approach combined with short practices will turn the current roster into contenders very soon. It is a good thing Herb is still around. He knows where the best restuarants are in every NBA city.

I feel good about the size of his staff. It tells me that he intends to do most of the work of coaching the players and showing them how to play the game his way. I believe he's a top flight teacher, just by witnessing what he did with his teams in PHX. Nash was never considered to be the MVP type player he became until he got with D'Antoni. They made the most of guys that no one really thought much of. Like Raja Bell and Diaw.

I know some are concerned about the team being molded as an offensive team rather than a defensive team, but I think Walsh has every intention of making sure the team is balanced. Not just offensive or defensive. The championship Magic Laker teams weren't the best defensive teams of their time, but they had good balance. You can win it all with a team that is slanted towards offense.

This team is stuck with some contracts that we won't be able to move and thus we will have players who don't defend well. Still we can begin to change the team make up and look forward to the future. For right now tho it's not likely that we'll be able to field a great defensive team, even if we added Tom Thibodeau. There's no KG on this team to lead and anchor the D.

Walsh got D'Antoni because he did not place the demand or expectation of coaching defense on him. That is why D'Antoni is not in Phoenix or Chicago.
