The Bulls have hired Vinny Del Negro as their new head coach, according to league sources.

Del Negro was a late arrival to the search process and has no formal coaching experience. He spent last season as an assistant to Phoenix Suns general manager Steve Kerr. Prior to that, he was a broadcaster for the Suns and San Antonio Spurs.

Del Negro, 41, spent 12 seasons playing point guard for five NBA teams, mostly with the Spurs. He averaged 9.1 points and 3.2 assists.

The Springfield, Mass., native beat out former Minnesota coach Dwane Casey and Sacramento assistant Chuck Person for the Bulls' job, which has been vacant since interim coach Jim Boylan was dismissed on April 17.

according to their guys in chicago:

1. reinsdorf is mega cheap and doesn't want to pay for another coach (while paying skiles)
2. vinny del toro supposedly has 2 veteran assistants lined up to come along

so tibs asking price may have been too high OR he did interview and paxson wasn't sold on him. apparently paxson suggested other guys to reinsdorf first which reinsdorf vetoed. VDN may not have been high on the list until recently.

I remember someone on Realgm said that he would make a good head coach. Other than that I don't really if this is a good or bad hire. Right now I'm not expected it to turn out particularly well for them.

I recall Don Nelson wanting to trade Starks for Del Negro. Checketts didn't think it was such a good idea.

as a budding Bulls hater, here's hoping that he coaches like he plays --- flat and uninspiring. Ha, at cheap azz Reinsdork, counting pennies.
