avg. 22 points 10 rebounds and 3 blocks last year
all big east selection
had 31 pt 19 rebound game against syracuse
has drawn comparisions to elton brand

not a great athlete
poor body tone
undersized
figures to be a solid contributor in the nba due to great hands and footwork

9th pick of the new york knicks

QUESTION: Why is it that every time media types mention the best players in college, they never seem to mention Mike Sweetney of Georgetown? This big guy averages 18.5 ppg and 10 rpg and shoots 61.5 percent in 27 mpg. Can you name a power forward other than Drew Gooden who does that on a nightly basis? If not, then why doesn't Sweetney receive the credit he is due? -- Geo, Washington, D.C.

VITALE: You can make a very good case for Sweetney, as he is one of the top power forwards in America. Unfortunately for him, there are guys like Gooden, Reggie Evans, Sam Clancy and a host of other outstanding power forwards. If I picked my top 15 players in America, Sweetney would be on that list

I'm a little worried about Sweetney being effective once the NBA season starts....mostly due to his lack of athleticism. In college he looked like a man amoung boys...now it seems the tables have turned. Granted I haven't actually seen hime in the summer league games, but the reports have indicated as so.

I won't be too upset and only really be sad if Nick Collison turns out to be a better pro player, since he really was the Knicks only other choice for a big man. Collison has been putting up some strong numbers in the Summer league with Seattle.

The guy has a good frame ... he has a soft touch ... he can run... his quickness has gotten much better... he doesn't get off the floor well.. good wingspan ... if he lives in the weight room he can be an elite role player like Malik Rose with more of post game.. the Fat Albert likeness is spooky, downright spooky indeed.

drew ... I agree about Collison. I would have taken him over Sweets.. rumor has it here in Seattle that Sonics brass would have taken Sweetney over Collison.

you guys make some good and interesting points about sweetney. i agree with anyone who thinks that he will be a solid player to have coming off the bench at the pf position. you know we all hope for the knicks to find that one player. the one like neo in the matrix but i guess sweetney and collison both would have been decent picks at 9.

hopefully the guy does what it takes so he can actually fulfill those possibilities like dedicate himself

been so long since the knicks had a rookie that i felt was actually going to play

Sweetney is a solid PF...

He just has to work on his defense, especially if Spree is traded KVH (ugh!).
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

I was down on drafting this guy, but after seeing him play, he is more athletic than I thought, but we will see...

Does anyone have high opinions on any of the players taken after him? (Lampe and Vranes not included for somewhat obvious reasons)

There are a bunch of guards and wings out there with a load of potential. Does anyone think any of them will turn into the next Sprewell/Finley surprise?

Sweetney was arguably the most accomplished big man in the draft.

Hayes is ready and will be a very good pro.. was the most ready to contribute at a high level.. big body, good shooter, scorer, very athletic, good size. He was my pick if we didn't trade down. I liked Pavlovic ... Kirelenko like... on the trade down. Cabarkapa was also an intriguing talent (Tskitishvilli-like). Boston made a good pick with Marcus Banks. He was the next best guard available. Lets see if he'll pass the ball though, a shoot first point. Just some thoughts ... Very, very, very happy we came away with Lampe in the second round. He might have the most upside of anyone drafted after Chris Bosh. It all hinges on his athletic upside, he's 18 and still growing into his body and might get much more coordination and explosion when he stops growing.
