I agree on not packaging the pick with Zach. I'd let him go without expecting anything but salary relief, but I wouldn't send a valuable asset like our pick along with him. There are, however, a couple of other rumors in the same column that would interest me.
The Indiana Pacers are trying to dangle the #11 pick in hopes of being able to package it with one of their ugly contracts (preferably Jermaine O’Neal). There is talk out of O’Neal’s camp that he anticipates being trade to Cleveland at some point this summer, possibly in a deal involving expiring contracts such as Wally Szczerbiak and Eric Snow.
O'Neal's contract is done when LeBron and the others become free agents. Marbury's salary would make the trade work cap wise. We can throw in some cash and a player like Balkman. The 11th pick could be useful to us. If we go big on the sixth pick, we could pick up a pg in Augustin with the 11th. If we go small on the sixth pick, we could get a useful big like McGee. Or we could package the 11th and Lee to trade up with Memphis, who is looking to move down.
There are a number of teams looking to move down or out of this draft if the right trade offer comes along. One of them is Memphis, who is having serious problems scheduling some of the top players expected to compete for the fifth overall pick. Things are reportedly bad enough that as many as 6 of the top 7 players in this draft (everyone projected in that range of our current mock draft besides Kevin Love) have told the Grizzlies they do not want to play for them. Memphis might thus decide to save some money and slide down a few slots, while possibly unloading a contract (such as Brian Cardinal) in the process. The Sixers could come into play here too.
That way, we might get a quality big and a quality guard with the fifth and sixth pick - maybe Bayless and Love. We'd have to give up Lee and and someone like Balkman and some cash and have O'Neal around for a couple of years instead of Marbury for one year.
