Doug Collins to Become Bulls Head Coach

May 29, 2008
BY BRIAN HANLEY Staff Reporter

Doug Collins will become the next Bulls head coach, according to a source.

The source said the deal is expected to be announced "sooner rather than later."

Expect one of the other candidates general manager John Paxson interviewed to be one of Collins' assistants.

Paxson has said Collins has one of the best basketball minds around, and chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said he loves Collins despite having fired Collins in a controversial move in 1989.

Collins coached the Bulls from 1986-89 and took the Bulls to the Eastern Conference finals. He also coached the Detroit Pistons and later coached Michael Jordan on the Washington Wizards.

Collins is an intense, fiery coach, who will remind some of Scott Skiles, who was fired on Christmas Eve.

Recently, Collins said he didn't want to leave his broadcasting job with TNT. Since then, the Bulls landed the No. 1 draft pick.

"I know Doug's got the itch [to coach again]," a league source said. "I think the Bulls' youth intrigues Doug more than the Phoenix [Suns] situation. He's a teacher That's what he likes to do.
"He might have been leery about the veterans on the Suns, including Shaq.

A native of Benton, Ill., Collins starred at Illinois State.

This came out of nowhere??? I think Collins is to soft for this team, they need that hard A** coach again to make them play up to their potential & stop stealing #1 Lottery picks.

I think it's a good hire. He did a good job with the pre-Jackson Bulls, only problem was Jordan didn't like him. I don't think he's soft at all. He won't be the hard ass that Skiles was on them but he'll instill some discipline in them.

Thank God. Now we no longer have to listen to him critique NBA games.... which usually consisted of him getting halfway through analyzing a play then going off on his "See this is what we used to do with Michael..." tangent that usually then led to some intelligible comments that had nothing to do with anything going on anywhere in the universe.

And to Chicago: Their roster is just plain f'd up now. Good coaching hire - need roster work.

LOL... F' the Bulls. They are such byatches it's ridiculous. They screwed us by taking advantage of our incompetant owner, they get 2 lottery picks in a row, unload lots of salary, have a chance to become awesome, then whine and whine that D'Antoni picked the Knicks, then they somehow get the #1 pick, and of aaaaaaaaall the coaches that have been available recently, they choose Doug Collins. lmao.

I guess you don't have to be a good GM in order to take advantage of Isiah Thomas. It's like convincing a coked up prostitute to sleep with you.

He will be a bag of bones by mid season. He is the incredible shrinking man whenever he coaches. Maybe when the Bulls play the Clippers they could have Dead night, the fans could where tie dyes along with Bill Walton and Collins could be the dancing skeleton. In addition to his issues with anorexia, I am sure his communication abilities have changed and he will have a big impact on a young team.

I thought for sure Doug would take the Suns job. I guess everyone knows that the Suns are on the way out since they have an old team. D'Antoni probably saw that and siad later. Shaq is like a big red flag in his old age no one wants anything to do with him.

It's weird that everyone is talking about how screwed the Suns are. When they made the Shaq trade, most people heralded it as a good move. I've repeatedly said it was one of the dumbest trades in recent history. No shock to me that people think the Suns are doomed now, even though nobody has admitted how silly they were being over thinking that acquiring a guy who is 8 years past prime was a good move.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Yes it was a terrible move. They should have stuck to their guns and went wih Marion. If anything Marion is coming to end of his contract and that could have benefitted the Suns. Besides you think that Grizzlies would have given them Gasol for Marion who actually fits their team better than Shaq. Well maybe not as Gasol trade was one of those NBA made fraud move similar to the Celtics with Garnett.

If they kept Marion, they would've been lost in the 1st round just like they did with Shaq. It was a lose-lose situation whether they traded Marion for Shaq or not, the Suns went all in with their chips. Its not like they would've been more competitive with Marion. It is just time for their window to close.

Absolutely. They certainly could've gotten Gasol. IMHO, Marion is better than Gasol and that would've been a steal for the Grizz.

They were WAY WAY better with Marion than they were with Shaq. The lost cause was Marion's personality issues. If they were going to trade Marion, they should've gotten younger, not older. Awful deal. Besides, Marion rocks.

I don't disagree. They got older instead of younger, that's why their window closed. And they were better with Marion, but you knew they would've came up short again this year with him.

I think that between the Lakers, Spurs, Hornets, Celtics and Pistons, it would've been tough to win a championship this year. I won't say impossible, though. However, quite frankly, last year I felt like they outplayed the Spurs and deserved to win that series. Too bad that series was ruined by a crooked official and a power-abusive commish. Had they beat the Spurs, they were NBA champions last year, IMHO.
