EWING'S UPSET OVER NO COACHING CALL
By MARC BERMAN

May 28, 2008 --

ORLANDO - Patrick Ewing has a beef with Knicks New York Knicks president Donnie Walsh - because he didn't get a phone call during the Knicks' head-coaching search.

Ewing, an Orlando assistant coach, attended opening night of the NBA's pre-draft camp - his son, Patrick Ewing Jr. of Georgetown is slated as a late first-round, early second-round pick. If he chooses, Ewing will get a chance to talk it out with Walsh, who arrives tomorrow. Ewing joked the media should set up the pow-wow.

"There's nobody who is an assistant coach who doesn't want to be a head coach," said Ewing, who has been an assistant for five seasons and is credited with lifting center Dwight Howard to the next level. "Unless you've already been a head coach and you're older and you're just putting in hours until you retire. I'm young. I'd definitely want to be a head coach one day. And I'm disappointed I didn't get a call, yeah.

"I think I'm an up and coming coach. I think I'm going to be a good head coach one day. Even if I don't get the job, I felt I deserved at least to get an interview."

Mike D'Antoni mentioned he'd consider Ewing for an assistant's position, but sources said he was being diplomatic when put on the spot.

"When I get a call, I can answer that question," said Ewing. "Nobody's called me. I still consider myself a Knick. I still want them to do well. I wish Mike all the best in the world. I hope he starts the turnaround process."

Ewings a up and coming coach? Says who?

Ewing's bitching and self proclamation is enough to say no!
I'll never trust this' team again.

he did good work w/Yao & Howard... why shouldn't he be at least granted an interview to see what he could do for our bigs? i don't get ur opposition to this considering the guy was probably the greatest Knick to ever put on the uniform... God forbid he teaches any of our guys how to play w/a sense of pride & passion while wearing that uniform.

I don't have anything against his play as a Knick. That has nothing to do with it.

I just have a problem with people who cry out loud, when they think they didn't get a chance. Tough luck I say! If they don't call you, then they don't call you.

Personally, I don't think we'd be missing too much with this guy. I mean Howard and Yao clearly don't need too much help as it is.

And if Ewing is such a lifter of talent, then why isn't anyone knocking down the door to get him? He's showing impatience. And if he was a lifter of talent, then how come he didn't raise all other big men, he's worked with, to another level.

I think I have a legit point. I don't like babies and when I see one, I run away.
I'll never trust this' team again.

Yeah you can say the same about kareem, at one point he couldn't get job in the NBA point blank. No matter how you look at it, it is little ridiculous that he is not affiliated with the knicks at this point. He also is been crying a little bit to much. think about it, how is herb williams managing to dodge bullets, because of his personality.

he's got a job & he's happy doing it, why should he complain? Ewing wants to come back to NY badly... why is that a bad thing? i don't get it... i don't like complainers either but to me this is not Ewing complaining... he was classy enough to wish Mike D well & expressed his desire to see this franchise become good again.

I base class on different kinds of things. And Ewing, to me, is not a class act off the court. I can see that you want him in NY and that's cool.

But can you sell him to us, other than alleged turning Howard and Yao into major stars? These two already had obvious tools for him to work with. I don't see any tools that curry and zbo bring with them. I'm just not convinced of this said power. I just feel we need more proof than that.

Mind you, I have nothing against his play on the court for us, he was great for us and showed a lot of pride. He did his best for us. But that's all separate to wanting to be coach. It's a different story.

don't get me mistaken, i'm not saying Ewing's a class act as much as i'm saying i don't consider him expressing his desire to coach in NY as complaining.

as for his coaching ability, i'd be open to giving him a try... Mark Aquirre is an Isiah guy, & Herb hasn't done much to develop these guys from what i've seen... IMO this team could use a guy to come in & show these guys what it means to put on that uniform & represent this city w/some pride... it's not like any of our players are stepping up to do it.

I think Ewing is at least as valuable as Herb on the bench. I do not think you have both of those guys as your assistants.

And if you wanted to take it a step further, his decsion to force a trade has left the franchise in a ridiclous mess since, so as doe-land hardly ever forgets this may just be a pesonal issue.

Larry Krystowiak is 6'9" Mark Iavaroni is 6'8". Rudy T was 6'8". Larry Bird was 6'9". Phil Jackson 6'8". Paul Silas 6'7". Not sure the extra 3 inches makes him any less capable.

I'd love to get Ewing back here-he is my favorite Knick of all time. But he seems a little whiny to me in this situation.

Ewing really has only been doing the assistant thing for a few years. He seems to be acting just a little too conceited at this point.

BTW, If I was Orlando, I'd be pissed.
