Kerr Will Let D'Antoni Talk To Bulls, Knicks

May 5, 2008 - 4:30 am
Chicago Tribune -
Suns coach Mike D'Antoni has been granted permission to talk to the Chicago Bulls and the New York Knicks , the Chicago Tribune is reporting.

Citing a report by KTAR-AM 620 in Phoenix, it appears that Suns GM Steve Kerr has had a change of heart, after previously declining to allow D'Antoni to talk to other teams.

The Bulls roster is way more enticing to D Antoni than ours. The young Bulls have athletes (Thomas, Deng, Gordon, Noah) that can fit D Antonis vision for a free flowing offense.

I believe he has two years left on his deal at about 8 million. We would really have to overpay to get him to come here instead of Chicago.

Not interested in D'Antoni. We have no components for a smart and aggresive fast break, motion offense team and we need to get our guys to play defense. D'Antoni would be a horrible fit.

If I recall correctly D'Antoni didn't like Marbury's style of play and was instrumental in getting him traded. I'm not interested in D'Antoni personally but I don't see this guy coming here with Marbury still on the roster even at just 1 yr or a half yr.

BLUESEATS CAN YOU CONFIRM THE ABOVE WITH QUOTES FROM THE PAST?

I think he wants the Bulls job it's been noted this is his Top choice mainly because he thinks he can turn Hinrich into Nash and they have the other pieces on the team to run his style of offense. Our name is in the mix but I think it's to his liking only because he knows how desperate we are and he can use us as a means to bargain with other teams.

I'm sure this may not matter to DW if D'Antoni doesn't truly want the job because Mark is his prime choice but if DW is trying to create/maintain this nitch that coaching this team is the prime job, he's selling himself, this franchise, and it's fans a little short. I get the feeling he's trying to show how desirable this job is by giving this perception of "Oooooooohhhhhh look how many people I'm interviewing for the job my door is being beaten down by all these interested coaching prospects."

You take out the New York relationships and I don't see too many candidates truly wanting to come here to coach. I could be wrong but this is the vibe I get. DW needs to stop the charades, hire the guy he wants, get him in place well before the draft takes place to get the coach's input on the kind of player(s) he may be most interested in coaching(draft and current roster).

I agree that his Phoenix system would most definitely not work in NY. Having said that, I think the Knicks owe it themselves to listen to what he has to say. I'm sure he'd ideally like to implement the same system, but maybe he could devise something new from either (1) his past failures, (2) around the personnel in place, or (3) a combination thereof.

There are only so many Steve Nashes around... I'm sure D'Antoni realizes that, just like I'm sure he realizes what a disaster this roster is. If he wants to interview, let him interview!

Nothing to lose at this point, except 60+ games.

True, I'm short on time right now, can't look for quotes, but the bottom of this page has stuff by D'Antoni talking about the improved mood of the club after the Marbury trade, and elsewhere he said people think Marbury should be a great PG but he doesn't see that as his strong suit.

In short, D'Antoni knew Marbury had to go ) to improve the chemistry of the club and B) to impliment his Euro style of ball movement.

I don't think anyone will argue those points anymore.

Why couldn't the Phoenix style work in this town? Obviously we dont have the players right now that could play that system, but isn't it documented that we dont have the players that could win in any system? After we hire a coach, whether it be D Antoni, Johnson, Jackson, etc, the coach must implement a style. Its Walsh's job to go out find the players that fit said style. So this notion that we dn't have the players to fit D Antoni's style is pointless. As I said, we dont have players that fit any style. We have a team of odd parts.

I dont think Walsh or anyone for that matter is trying to move forward with this team.

Thank you

D'Antoni will want no part of this right now. If he interviews it will be for show and heirs, nothing more.

King.. what do you think of D'Antoni as a coach? Do you think his style can succeed and when I say succeed, I mean win a championship.

D'Antoni needs to sit out a season and reevaluate his coaching system. Trading for Shaq isn't the only reason why his team failed to make the Championship game this year. Noway are the knicks hiring him either.

I don't like D'Antoni with this group. He seems to be a free wheeling kinda coach and this roster with Special Nate, ZBo and Dinglebury will eat him alive. I really want Action Jackson as head coach. I want a different approach and Helicopter Man is a different approach.

I think folks underestimate how good phoenix played defense. not this year but last year- yes, they were wide open and gave up a lot of points- but they played wide open and created a lot of possessions- both for and against.

limiting possessions by playing slow ball doesn't equal playing defense.

if he is rational, he goes to chicago.

Nobody want Lee gone, but if you expect the team to get better they have to trade Talent to get Talent! By the way Lee isn't all that great people!!!

D'Antoni would benefit more with the Knicks roster than the Bulls. The Bulls players are not set for the running game the KNicks are more set for the running game. With Nate, Chandler, Crawford and Balkman and even Lee the Knicks are more set for running than the bulls.

I agree those five players would fit into what D'Antoni might try to do- but you are talking about very minor role players- none of whom can hit outside shots- and the key with D'Antoni's system is spacing, passing and hitting the outside shot.

And you conveniently overlook our plodding front court- offensive black holes.

I think the Bulls roster is a lot more developed for what he might look for- lets face it- they did finish with a better record than us- that wasn't an accident.
