I'm fine with either Mark Jackson or Avery Johnson. I chose Jackson though.

I want a coach who will instill discipline and confidence while stressing defense, ball and player movement, fundamentals and a solid PG driven offense.
If it didn’t work in Phoenix with Nash and Stoutamire... it’s just not a winning formula. It’s an entertaining formula, but not a winning one. - Derek Harper talking about D'Antoni's System

I want the skipper back. I believe the dust has settled, and he was just about to turn the corner, right the course, and get the team back on track.

It's a shame that someone else will now get the credit for this championship team that he built.

Just read this in Chad Ford's chat on espn.com, on the subject:

Tom (Sydney, Australia): Who's the front-runner for the Knicks job now?

Chad Ford: Here's the order I'd put it in:

1. Mike D'Antoni
2. Sam Mitchell
3. Avery Johnson
4. Mark Jackson

I've been cracking up on all of the NY media reports that Donnie Walsh is moving at a snail's pace on the coaching search. Can you blame him? If he can get a coach like D'Antoni, it's worth the wait. Mark Jackson isn't going anywhere.

I would rather have an assistant coach of a winning franchise who's ready to step up and become the man.

We need somone who can change the culture of this franchise, but he and the new GM must be on the same page
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

Thibodeau. When ever the Knicks have had good teams, we had a coach who emphasized strong d. Holzman was a defensive genius. Hubie, Riley and Van Gundy demanded their teams play tough d.

I like everything about Sam Mitchell. I wish we could get Stan Van Gundy, but Sam is basically the same guy. I'd love to have him lead our team back to respectability.

anyone of the rumored candidates would be fine by me except for Karl & Flip.

i like Jax tho cuz the thought of bringing Ewing in as an assistant to work w/Curry & Zach appeals to me.

Thibideau or Jax. I know I would like the way a Thibideau team would play. I also think Jax would be a great coach and teacher. Thibideau was mentioned when they gave Chaney the job. He was the man back then.

I would love D'Antoni - but the situation here in NYC is its going to be a while before we have a good team & I doubt any top candidates would really want to suffer through a 20 win season.

I would love Ewing - he deserves a shot.

Whoever we bring in- they need to be prepared to be patient.

My first two choices are Avery Johnson and Sam Mitchell. I don't get the feeling that Sam is going to get fired so I will go with Avery.

You don't think D'antoni can make us the suns of the east? We have a lot of young athletic players and if we land a top pick this summer it could really make a good fit (Rose). We don't play D anyway and unless we trade everyone I don't see this changing any time soon.

Couldn't agree more I don't understand why this hasn't be done already. When the Knicks first got Curry Ewing should have been the next call. I would be happy with Avery, Mitchell, D'Antoni, Thibodeau and hopefully whoever the next coach is he will be given all the room necessary to shape this team.

Tom Thibodeaux would be the best choice, and a choice we should have made years ago. He should have been the Knick coach instead of that loser Chaney.

Who we bring in as coach is irrelevant as long as this roster is intact.

Tom T won't miraculously have this band of morons playing NBA level defense.

DAntoni won't have this band of terrible shooting morons playing like the Suns offense did.

Avery Johnson won't have this band of idiots playing 67 win playoff basketball.

Until at least 3 of Marbury, Zach, Q, Crawford, Curry are gone? You can forget about greener pastures.

Also I would be very wary of Avery, DAntoni, Mitchell - etc - because now you're talking about guys who will be looking for the big payday and will demand 5 years - and want 5-6M per year to coach here thus locking us into another regime of coaching.

Of which will be an epic failure as long as half this current roster is still here. Why people don't see this - or - don't feel compelled to talk about this - is confusing to me.

This roster is atrocious and no coach can win games with it. Isiah showed, pre-Zach, the best you can do with this team is 38 wins if it's fully healthy.

If anyone's having dreams that Avery, Sam, Tom T, Mike, etc....are going to change that without having a brand new roster...well, you need to be pinched, cause you are indeed dreaming.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Now, as to personal selection, I still say there's no reason why Dave Hanners could not be given a 2 year deal (which lines up with the summer of 2010 cap savings attempt walsh spoke of), and be free to play the kids big minutes while management finds new homes for the majority of our "franchise cornerstone veteran" core.

Even if not Hanners? No coach should get more than a 2 year deal given the state of the team and what must be done to improve the roster and how long that might take. You don't lock yourself into a coaching plan of 4-5 years when in 2 years your roster is going to (or at least should) look a lot different and there's no telling what that roster will be.
