CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Well-traveled Larry Brown has reached an agreement to return to the NBA as coach of the Charlotte Bobcats, a person familiar with the decision told the Associated Press on Monday.

The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because an official announcement has not been made, said Brown was expected to sign a contract on Tuesday. The Bobcats have called an afternoon news conference for what was termed a "major basketball announcement."

Brown will replace Sam Vincent, fired on Saturday after going 32-50 in his one season. It'll be Brown's ninth NBA team and his first coaching job since his messy exit as coach of the New York Knicks in 2006.

The move means Bobcats part-owner Michael Jordan has turned to a fellow former North Carolina Tar Heel to try to get the fourth-year Bobcats into the playoffs for the first time. Jordan and the 67-year-old Brown both played for former North Carolina coach Dean Smith.

LB is gonna have a field day with those guys. The talent and ability on that team is begging for him, and he's gonna mold something good out of them. You think Felton becomes a top 3 NBA pg next Summer?

At least we have a team to root against.

Too bad Isiah couldn't have coached against him just once.
I'll have to live with Nate trying to exact some revenge on him.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Ah man, that woulda been sweet. Isiah vs. Brown.

The Bobcats should be a playoff team next year if everyone buys in immediately. That's why its so important to have a coach in place at this stage in the game. Yeah they just fired sam vincent, but players need to know what's expected of them during the off season. They can do their own research on browns teams and coaching style. Call former players up and review tape. Focus.

I love the Bobcats roster so I'm hoping they can sucseed next year.

That was old news.

Bobcats fire Sam Vincent

CHARLOTTE — Sam Vincent was fired by the Charlotte Bobcats on Saturday after just one season as coach.

The fourth-year franchise entered the season with hopes of making the playoffs for the first time, but went 32-50.

Part-owner Michael Jordan, who has the final say on all basketball decisions, took a gamble in hiring Vincent. He had never been an NBA head coach and had spent just one year in the league as an assistant with the Dallas Mavericks.

Vincent clearly suffered growing pains. He struggled to find a consistent rotation, constantly shuttling Raymond Felton between point guard and shooting guard. Vincent also angered players for questioning their effort and commitment in front of reporters.

While majority owner Bob Johnson gave Vincent a vote of confidence, Jordan was mum on the issue, saying he would decide on Vincent's fate after the season.

Charlotte finished with one fewer win than in 2006-07, despite acquiring Jason Richardson in a draft night trade and significantly increasing its payroll.

Vincent's ouster means Larry Brown could quickly become a candidate for the job. Brown and Jordan have a history from their ties to North Carolina, and Brown's mother lives in Charlotte.

Brown resigned as executive vice president of the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday. Brown's agent, Joe Glass, refused to discuss the Charlotte job Saturday, but said his client is eager to return to coaching.

“Larry is interested in getting back into coaching in the pros or college,” Glass said.

He will most likely be coaching the Bobcats. That is the type of team he needs to coach, a very young team that he can teach and develop into a playoff team.
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

Bobcats certainly underachieved and it was no surprise that Vincent got canned....yet....given Larry Clown's recent endeavors I see no reason to just assume he will go to Charlotte, have every players ear - and him theirs - and have some merry relationship that culminates in a playoff berth next season. With Clown these days you have just as good if not better chance of a mutiny and a meltdown as you do with a rise to riches.

LB In NC is pretty cool in my book.

Last two years I wouldn't even see the knicks in charlotte let alone the Bobcats.

I might have to go to a few games next season.

I wish LB the best and hope he gets to prove that the reason he is "next town brown" is he has been in demand for 40 years, wins, and the avg life span of a coach with a team is 4 years. Somtimes it just time to move on and everyone knows it!

I think most realize that Larry was stupid to take the knick gig (money aside)and work with our clowns and likewise he was the wrong guy to coach our group of sweathogs.

Its all behind us and Larry can have breakfast with his 100 year old Mum often.

I guess we'll find out.

Maybe Bickerstaff(is he still there?) and Jordan will work with Clown? Give him what he wants roster wise?

I know one thing....Clown will like Okafor a heck of a lot more than Curry.

I'd still leave the odds at 50/50 of working or going down in flames until we see what transpires down there. No automatic assumption of success anymore with that guy.

Cos, shame on you.

A coach looking for another job while his team is deep in the playoffs trying to win a championship is COMPLETELY normal.

Just sit back and count down the seconds until the Old Weasel butts heads with Jordan. It's inevitable. NC and Isiah-hating connection or not.

EDIT:

Also, if he makes the Cats better, it's going to make OUR beloved organization look really bad (if that's even possible at this point).

working with larry brown will cause everyone headaches.
but if they CONTINUE to work with brown, the team will prosper.

they will have to break a few eggs next year so no playoffs. but they should expect to get there in the 09/10 season.

I know. LB was a complete bystander in the 05/06 debacle. Got ya.

I never said he was innocent but look at what happened. Did Isiah not also win 23 games with what I would call a "superior" team than Brown's? Was Isiah tanking? No, the team just sucked. Isiah hired Brown to coach a team that didn't want to be coached. I don't think Brown sabotaged anything from the start but probably started doing stupid things on purpose to force people out at some point when the season was lost.

Bottomline is that Brown needs people willing to work for him and when you have an entire team that is the complete opposite of what he wants I think that is a recipe for disaster. I also find it very hard to believe the 2 goofballs when they said Larry wanted Francis and Jalen.

My blame for one season(05/06): 75% Isiah Thomas, 25% Larry Brown.

My blame for 4 1/2 years of sucktitude and embarrassment: 100% Isiah Thomas.

I was actually surprised you didn't drop in to throw in a one-liner insult and disappear for the next few weeks. That's new.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

Both were horrible, so it stands to reason that some here would share the same hostility and spew the same vitriol at Brown, that usually reserved exclusively for Zeke. I have no love for both personally. I dont see, why in your initial post, you were so eager to let Brown off the hook and confused as to why some posters here arent willing to do the same. Seems you have an agenda.

I'm really glad to see that Larry isn't going to be completely tarnished by that scum of the earth Isiah and his enabler Idiot Dolan. At least now, people with common sense can see that Larry had nothing to do with this mess. They were the laughingstock of professional sports before Larry was there and after he left. The only thing laughable now are the ridiculous cries of sabotage by Brown. How exactly do you sabotage a ship that was already doomed and sinking?

Larry paid his one year of penance for whatever he needed to do to survive that circus and now he can move on with his Hall of Fame coaching career.

Completely well thought out, rational, and throughly unbiased opinion here. Y

Great quote from DJ and is a summation of essentially what Billups and Rip had to say in regards being coached under LB.

They both said the guy is hard to play under and at times can be a flat out jerk but he's teaching yiu about the game and how to win and they listened because they respected him for this. I've talked to Rodney Buford personally about LB who was coached by him when in Philly. He said the guy is old school and a teacher of the game. Had no problem playing for him. Said he spent less time watching film but more time in the gym trying to help players get better individually and as a team.
