WASHINGTON (AP) - Under pressure to increase their numbers, the Army and Marine Corps are sharply raising the number of recruits with felony convictions they are admitting to the services.
Data released by a congressional committee shows that the number of soldiers admitted to the Army with felony records jumped from 249 in 2006 to 511 in 2007. And the number of Marines with felonies rose from 208 to 350.

The bulk of the crimes were for burglaries, other thefts, and drug offenses, but nine involved sex crimes and six involved manslaughter or vehicular homicide convictions.

The military is desperate for recruits so its not surprising that they are now allowing convicted felons to join the military. This isn't a new phenomenon. Playa this is also a pretty good article about just how low the recruitment standards have fallen for the US military.

http://alternet.org/waroniraq/41685/?page=entire
Last year, the New York Times reported that two Ohio recruiters were quick to sign up a recruit "fresh from a three-week commitment in a psychiatric ward" even after the man's parents told them he had bipolar disorder -- a diagnosis that would disqualify him." After senior officers found out, the mentally ill man's enlistment was canceled, but in "[i]nterviews with more than two dozen recruiters in 10 states," the Times heard others talk of "concealing mental-health histories and police records," among other illicit practices.

In May of this year, the Oregonian reported that Army recruiters, using hard sell tactics and offering thousands of dollars in enlistment bonus money, signed up an autistic teenager "for the Army's most dangerous job: cavalry scout." The boy, who had been enrolled in "special education classes since preschool" and through "a special program for disabled workersÖha[d] a part-time job scrubbing toilets and dumping trash," didn't even know the U.S. was at war in Iraq until his parents explained it to him after he was first approached by a recruiter. Only following a flurry of negative publicity, did the Army announce that it would release the autistic teen from his enlistment obligation.

In 2004, the Pentagon instituted a "Moral Waiver Study" whose seemingly benign goal was "to better define relationships between pre-Service behaviors and subsequent Service success." That turned out to mean opening the recruitment doors to potential enlistees with criminal records. In February of this year, the Baltimore Sun wrote that there was "a significant increase in the number of recruits with what the Army terms ëserious criminal misconduct' in their background" -- a category that included: "aggravated assault, robbery, vehicular manslaughter, receiving stolen property and making terrorist threats." From 2004 to 2005, the number of those recruits had spiked by over 54%, while alcohol and illegal drug waivers, reversing a four-year downward trend, increased by over 13%.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, law enforcement officials report that the military is now "allowing more applicants with gang tattoos because they are under the gun to keep enlistment up." They also note that "gang activity may be rising among soldiers." The paper was provided with "photos of military buildings and equipment in Iraq that were vandalized with graffiti of gangs based in Chicago, Los Angeles and other cities."

Last month, the Sun-Times reported that a gang member facing federal charges of murder and robbery enlisted in the Marine Corps "while he was free on bond -- and was preparing to ship out to boot camp when Marine officials recently discovered he was under indictment." While this particular recruit was eventually booted from the Corps, a Milwaukee Police Detective and Army veteran, who serves on the federal drug and gang task force that arrested the would-be Marine, noted that other "[g]ang-bangers are going over to Iraq and sending weapons backÖ gang members are getting access to military training and weapons."

Earlier this year, it was reported that an expected transfer of 10,000-20,000 troops to Fort Bliss, Texas caused FBI and local law enforcement to fear "a turf war" between "members of the Folk Nation gangÖ[and] a criminal group that is already well-established in the area, Barrio Azteca." The New York Sun wrote that, according to one FBI agent, "Folk Nation, which was founded in Chicago and includes several branches using the name Gangster Disciples, has gained a foothold in the Army."

Another type of "gang" member has also begun to proliferate within the military, evidently thanks to lowered recruitment standards and an increasing urge by recruiters to look the other way. In July, a study by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks racist and right-wing militia groups, found that -- due to pressing manpower concerns -- "large numbers of neo-Nazis and skinhead extremists" are now serving the military. "Recruiters are knowingly allowing neo-Nazis and white supremacists to join the armed forces and commanders don't remove them from the military even after we positively identify them as extremists or gang members," said Scott Barfield, a Defense Department investigator quoted in the report.

The New York Times noted that the neo-Nazi magazine Resistance is actually recruiting for the U.S. military "urg[ing] skinheads to join the Army and insist on being assigned to light infantry units." As the magazine explained, "The coming race war and the ethnic cleansing to follow will be very much an infantryman's warÖ It will be house-to-houseÖ until your town or city is cleared and the alien races are driven into the countryside where they can be hunted down and ëcleansed.'"

Apparently, the recruiting push has worked. Barfield reported that he and other investigators have identified a network of neo-Nazi active-duty Army and Marine personnel spread across five military installations in five states. "They're communicating with each other about weapons, about recruiting, about keeping their identities secret, about organizing within the military." Little wonder that "Aryan Nations graffiti" is now apparently competing for space among American inner-city gang graffiti in Iraq.

I wonder Playa do they put the gang bangers in with the white Supermacist?

What are you retarded? Have you ever served a day of your soft little life in the service? Have you ever worked any kind of job that involved you getting your fat ass up from behind a computer and getting your hands dirty? Have you ever met/seen/spoken to a real soldier? Im guessing all the answer is no to every question. I would love to see you have the balls to say such a thing in person to a combat vet from any war. I bet my grandfather who served in world war 2 would still be able to knock you on your ass. Your a pathetic coward who hides behind a screen and bashes real men who put their lives on the line for trash like you. Ill tell you, Ive served 7 years in the Army Infantry and I never met one "murderer" or "rapist". Perhaps if you had the balls to put your name on a contract you would have the priveledge of serving with patriots, but since you dont, since you are just a coward, you can bash them on a basketball forum to your little ***** ass hearts content.

Its disheartening to see this. I believe that people deserve second chances, but there needs to be a line. I know I wouldnt want to have someone convicted of manslaughter holding a rifle covering me in combat. If they need more recruits, they should raise the pay. Start the pay off at 60k and see how many qualified applicants they get once they pay the market rate. Good article tho

I am sorry if i offended you, that was not my intention. I just don't see a difference between a person being killed by a burglar or a person being killed by American soldier who was told that its his right to kill, given orders to do so etc.

Your grandfather fought in the last war that was honorable because America was actually being threatened. It saddens me as an American that we are murdering and raping the Iraqies for no good reason. No i never served and i hope and pray that i will never have to kill a person in my life. War is horrible no matter how you spin it. People die, little kids see their parents die in front of them and vise versa. I really don't care what you or anyone thinks of me as a person but to go "put your name on the contract" one has to have quite a different view of things than me. And i've spoken to a couple of vets, one guy who is in some Board of Vietnam Veterans Organization in Queens NY.(don't remember the exact name)just met him coupla weeks ago while birdwatching in Forest Park. We had a very deep and insightful conversation, wonderful guy. Anyway he told me that every single vet he talked to is against wars. So i'll take his word for it.

As for the definition of "murder" and how you've never met a murderer, well lets just say when you take someones life that only means 1 thing. And you can call it whatever you want. Self-defense is different but i thinks its pretty clear at this point that the war in Iraq was self-defense gone wrong. At this point you can make an arguement that Iraqies are the ones self-defending. And if you think you've never met a rapist, well you never know with these things, but you can believe whatever makes you feel good, thats everyones right.

If you disagree with the war then thats fine. But to label the soldiers as murderers is disrespectful to a degree that I find hard to articulate. Although I have never met you, you come across in your posts as an educated and reasonable person. Im surprised that you are taking this side.

If you want to define murder as it is detailed in the NYS Penal Code Section 125.27 sub.1 "A person is guilty of murder in the first degree when: (1) With intent to cause the death of another person, he causes the death of such person or of a third person; then yes, all these soldiers are murderers, along with every soldier who has ever killed in history. All the American soldiers in World War 2 who killed Nazis during the liberation of Europe are murderers. Any person who has ever killed in self defense is a murderer.

But I would think that you would agree that there is a fundamental difference between killing and murderering. If you want to side with this coward who wants to call people who are PATRIOTS murderers because they put there lives on the line to protect our country then fine.

The mother of a murderer. Would you tell her dead son is a murderer? Ask her how she knows her son is not a rapist. Ask her if she knows the definition of murder.

Tell the family of my friend who I served with who gave his life for his friends and for his country that he is a murderer. If the Urbina family gets upset, tell them about the definition of murder and ask them if their son was a rapist. Tell them he died for nothing. A flesh and blood man died for nothing.

Tell these men that their friend, my former squad leader Staff Sergeant Christian Engeldrum, who was killed on the same road as my friend Will above was a murderer. I would love to see what your face looked like once EMS scraped you off of the floor. When the police take your report explain to them the definition of murder, and how you felt it was entirely appropiate to say that.

I know you hate something like this. So cheesy, right? How could anybody love this country where we rape and pillage innocent countries, where we have no respect for the environment and big oil rules everything, or whatever it is people like you say. Ill tell you what, I love this country, and I have the utmost respect for any person, man or woman who serves it, whether that is a police officer who puts his family and his social life second for a job where he is despised and hated by the very people that he tries to protect, or to some 18 year old kid is standing on a corner in Baghdad, serving a country where a large percentage of the population would agree with you that they are equal in name and status to rapists and killers. It seems that the people who sacrifice the most are loved the least. Well I for one, will never forget the men who protect us.

very touching izybx, and i cannot and would not take anything away from the sadness of the personal situations which are affected by war. 4 thousand of our fellows died and countless others were maimed and crippled. And pretty much everyone who was there has PTSS and are scarred mentally. Those guys and girls are heroes and i never said they werent except if they've killed someone then they are murderers and i don't have a problem with the word. I have a problem with the concept of killing people for no good reason, thats right. Call me a coward or whatever you want. Iraqies who killed our soldiers are murderers too and to their people, in their culture they are heroes too. I am not taking sides, i try to see it from both points. It seems like the position is the same, both Americans and Iraq people are murderers and both are heroes. And the United States of America made it happen.

And why are you asking me if i'd ever "ask this guy's mom if he was a murderer or rapist" ? When family members get involved its a different thing. When someone close to you dies these types of discussions are rude and pointless. Oh and by the way, big part of being an American is accepting other cultures and other views and if you don't agree with that then you are not being patriotic yourself imho.

I think what izybx and other may suggest to you is that your definition of a murderer and its implied implication is waaaaaaaayyyyyy off base. If you lump murderers and killers into one group you are a bit naive in the least and quite daft too. Just MHO. I mean, we have all killed some form of life right? Bugs, animals for food (directly or indirectly), etc, right? That's why we have different shades of grey and include the morality behind it.

I understand what you are saying. There is a difference between killing an animal or some other lower life form and a human life tho. Its like this, its ok to kill and eat a cow but its not ok to kill and eat a human. Thats the common perception. I am a vegetarian myself and i don't wanna eat neither. Just like i wouldn't want to participate in anything that involves murder. I don't care how ethically or morally "good" or "right" murder or killing is. Only 1 exception- self defense. Now if, god forbid, there is a Hitler-like threat, an invasion, i believe its ok to kill in order to defend one's homeland from occupants.

Any other kind of killing is wrong and dishonorable. But even i make a distinction between different kinds of murder. However, even in self-defense its still murder, except its justified. And i am naive and daft, i really don't expect anyone to share my point of view.

Playa, you post a video of some soldiers acting unprofessional and abusing animals. Do you think that it is okay to judge a large group of people by the actions of a few morons on video tape. Do you think that I can find videos on the internet that would show whatever group/class of people you identify yourself acting like fools? Im sure I could, but would that prove some point?

So what exactly is your point by showing that video?

Defend your position even tho you know your wrong. You wont eat meat, you respect every culture in the world, and im sure that you would go out of your way to avoid slandering any sex/racial/ethnic/religious group because thats just wrong. But its perfectly okay to call the people who make it possible for you to sleep at night murderers and rapists. The words roll so easily off of your tongue, and the rest of the mindless cattle around you bobble their heads in agreement. We are the great satan right? We are a classist, racist, oil guzzling, earth hating, violence loving, unenlightend evil society right? Theres no point arguing with a person like you with your distorted perception of America.

military personel going insane in iraq doing foolish stuff.

I am ex military many yrs ago when being at war meant something, this war is a an unjust war.

I believe there are quite a few military personnel doing imbecellic things compared to this video.

How soon you may have forgotten Abu Graib in Guantanamo Bay Cuba and all the gross positions people were made to pose in, degrading even women openly even going against their personal religion.
