Meanwhile, Walsh finally addressed one top candidate many Knick fans want on the bench next season - Mark Jackson, who interestingly enough announced his resignation from YES Network last night.
some Knick fans accept mediocrity as excellence .... I don't!

Yeah what is the love affair with Mark Jackson? What has he done to prove he would be a good coach? I am asking because I havent heard one thing until Walsh showed up and now people are excited about this.

Just because Isiah is bad doesnt mean he should be replaced with just anyone...

I'd rather have Thibodeau but besides that who else is out there? Skiles? Carlisle? van Gundy? We will suck anyway so there is no point in bringing in an experienced coach. But the people doing back flips for Jackson confuse me.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

I like Mark Jackson but as asked earlier, what's he done to be coach of any NBA team?
I don't think Thibodeau would be a good fit or Skiles (rubs players the wrong way). I Like Carlisle, Van Gundy would be good but I'm not sure he'd be invited back with his abrupt departure before. I like Paul Westphal but he'd need good defensive assistants.
We'll just see what happens.

Thibodeau would be my first choice. Jackson may well be a very good coach, but I'd feel better about it if he had some experience as an assistant.

I also prefer Thibodeau. Taking a chance on Jackson as a new coach is a risk that may or may not work. Maybe people are on the Jackson bandwagon also because it might mean Ewing comes back and ends the curse of us not winning a playoff series since he was traded?

Thibodeau, Skiles, Carlisle, JVG, Silas?

why not Starks or Ewing? At least they paid their coaching dues

Head coach is a very important position, why give it to a rookie? Jackson should at least start out as an assistant here or somewhere first OR have two or three extremely experienced assistant coaches

We all need to calm dowm and watch and see who his assisitants will be.

I have to believe he will bring on veteran guys just like Larry Bird did in Indiana.
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

he is a good basketball mind, and probably has the right kind of personality to deal with the changes that will be going on. Is there a downside to this? (assuming it happens)

I wouldn't mind if Mark came on board because this roster is not winning anything and a guy like Jackson might be fine for two years - coaching the kids - as we clean out the veterans and their contracts.

Those of you who still think this roster's problems stem from coaching are really losing touch with what has transpired over four years and several head coaches and dozens of assistants.

It's the players, not the coaches. Carlisle or JVG or Skiles aren't going to come in here and make these fatasses play defense and win games. You guys who believe this, again, just haven't been paying attention.

no only that but those kinds of guys might just grate on the young talent we are hopefully going to be focusing on. I think a guy like Mark Jackson (like Nate McMillan) is a good choice to teach and connect with what will hopefully be a younger team

Problem isn't just coaching BUT coaching isn't something you just pick up on the fly. The detailed preparation for the season, each game, match ups while threading a thin line between massaging the ego's, keeping everybody happy while playing only those who you deem fit.

I do not expect a rookie with great insight to do a good to reasonable job, more likely a bad to mediocre job.

The fact that we're not winning anytime soon or that we have a lot of problems isn't an excuse. Next season should be the start of the right environment to work in, accountability and a clear connection between the effort you put in and the playing time you receive.

Any coach who comes here can expect to lose, a lot, but since we need a total overhaul of the current culture the head coach is not an underrated position.

Agreed and good point.

The lone thing to fear with a new guy like Jackson would be a situation similar to what happened with Sam Mitchell in Toronto for his first few seasons.

Yet I don't see how we can let such a fear cause us to dismiss any possibilities and just go ahead and gun for an experienced coach. You bring the experienced coach on board when you have a team in place to be competitive in the playoffs. Our next two seasons in all likelihood will not be competitive - so you give a guy like Jax a 2 year deal and see how things go.

The difference with sam mitchell in toronto is this; the management could care less about winning consistently. He got a taste of the playoffs then they backtracked into the middle of the pack, instead of improving on the fly.

Eversince the Antonio Davis and junkyard dog was in toronto, they haven't addressed the rebounding problem on their team. REB= WINS

Sounds like you're expecting the team to be in a position to win a lot of games and be in playoff contention and therefore you want a veteran coach to ensure this happens. That's just not going to happen. There is 4.75 years of evidence to support that reality from the numerous coaches and assistants to the numerous players that ISIAH had brought here. They're not winning, PERIOD.

Besides, there are guys like Avery Johnson out there, who can step right in and command respect. If players refuse to respect a coach - they won't respect ANY coach (and we've witnessed that with this roster for years) - so instead of trying to cater to the players with the proper coach (a player coach - or a hard ass coach that demands respect) - why not go an entirely different direction?

Tell the vets to stuff it and trade them - tell the kids it's their turn - and roll with it through the tear down process?

It's not an excuse it's reality. Nobody is expecting to lose just for the sake of "you suck, lose games" but it's reality to assume the team will not be competitive as the overpaid lazy veterans are moved out and the youth is given more minutes per game to develop. In that the last thing you want is a veteran coach who will demand 5M a year and who will get fed up rather quickly with the majority of this roster - as will the players get fed up with the coach ----

and then what? We watch another two seasons of a lame duck coach waiting to be fired while our arrogant worthless vets cry to the media about the coach's harsh treatment, all while watching them win another 25 games?

Now, that's pointless, and what should not be an excuse to not hire a guy like Jackson, or Terry Porter, or Darrell Armstrong (if he's ready) - is "Well, a rookie coach can't win, so we can't hire him."

newsflash: No coach in the world can get this roster of spoiled overpaid lazy out of shape one-way roster of players to WIN GAMES.

That's the biggest point in all of this. No coach can teach this roster to win games.

It's time to get off the quick fix Isiah line of thinking that we've all been sucked into the past 5 years (really, going on 7 back into the layden years even) where we all still feel like we're a 90s Knick team that is just down on their luck and all they need is that one big trade (Sprewell) or that one new coach (JVG - or most recently, LB was that man to be) - and BOOM back to 45+ wins and making noise in the East.

Those days are long long gone. Time for a new direction with both roster movement and coaching.

Get rid of the vets, play the kids and the draft picks, and the best coach for this process? A young guy looking to make his debut (Jackson) - or a young guy looking for a second chance at such (Terry Porter, whatever happened to him! Bucks gave him a RAW DEAL.)

Yeah but I was more alluding to how when they were losing some games and it was apparent some of the vets were packing it in and not trying - Sam went to war with his players - the players went to war with him - and they all took it to the media.

Once those crappy vets got moved out (hmmmm a little foreshadowing here lol?) the young guys started playing hard for Sam .... Colangelo came in and made some quick tweaks --- and suddenly the Raptors played hard and got far (although whatever happened to them this season..lol..)

Back to the point: There's always a chance Jackson gets dissed by the crappy vets - and it goes down in flames - but that's not a reason to not take a chance. Besides, the players who would react negatively to Jax - have already reacted negatively to Lenny, Herb, Larry, and Isiah. So what's the moral of THAT story?

Get rid of THOSE players and get a coach in here not based on THOSE players but on your near-future plan.

What's the near-future plan? *Or SHOULD be* --- Play the kids, get rid of the vets.
