Trail Blazers request waivers on forward Darius Miles

Pursuant to NBA procedures with regard to career-ending injuries, the Portland Trail Blazers have requested waivers on forward Darius Miles, General Manager Kevin Pritchard announced today.

An independent medical examiner jointly appointed by the NBA and the NBA Players Association examined Miles and determined that the damage to Miles’ right knee is severe enough to qualify as a career-ending injury.

Miles has missed all of the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons, last appearing in a game for the Trail Blazers on April 15, 2006.

“Given the serious nature of his knee injury, we agree with the doctor’s conclusion that Darius has sustained a career-ending injury,” Pritchard said. “This allows Darius and the Trail Blazers to move forward and achieve closure to this matter. To his credit, Darius worked hard to come back, but his body just didn’t allow it to happen.”

The 6-9 forward appeared in 145 games for the Trail Blazers after arriving from Cleveland in exchange for Jeff McInnis and Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje on Jan. 21, 2004. As a Trail Blazer, Miles averaged 12.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

The third overall pick of the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2000 NBA Draft, Miles played six NBA seasons with Los Angeles, Cleveland and Portland. He appeared in 412 games, with career averages of 10.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists.

Good thing is Isiah got fired before we could ever get him. Good thing he's gone forever now.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

The Knicks medical staff would have had him playing in no time at all!

Thats always upsetting, i feel for the guy. All things come to an end so nothing unusual, just makes me thing about how Malone and Stockton had a specifically designed warm up routine, i bet it has to do
with them both being such durable athletes.

Yeah man, glad you said it. Most around here are so full of themselves, that would rather use this story as an opportunity to launch into more anti-Zeke sentiment, or half-jokes, rather than acknowledging the abrupt end of a career and dream. This might not reach Darfur/Tibet levels of outrage, but it still sucks nonetheless. Well, at least Miles has a few mil to cushion the blow.

Miles made a crapload of money & never lived up to his hype... why should any of us have any sympathy when he's probably lounging around on his yacht someplace sipping on crystal & bangin' bball groupies every other night?

u wanna know who i have tremendous sympathy for? Jay Williams out of Duke... the kid coulda been a superstar but the injury squashed his dreams before they were ever realized... Darius Miles had every opportunity to fulfill his dreams & never did, not because of injury but because he either just wasn't good enough or just didn't wanna work hard enough to become the player he coulda been... i have no sympathy for him... he's made his money.

C'mon TMS. First of all, one doesnt have anything to do with the other. What does his performance level have to do with his knee essentially disintegrating and ending his career? Besides, why is "hype" being held against him? Blame the scouts who misread his talent level. Why is that his burden? Its not as if he was Kwame levels of unproductive. And I dont know how you get away with questioning his work ethic.

I've acknowledged the fact that we wont see him begging for change anytime soon, so this isnt a case of misapplied sentimentality. It just sucks that a young man, to whom basketball was an obvious life-changing constant and dominant force, had his career taken away from him because his body failed him.

We lose sight of the fact that these cats put their bodies through hell to compete at such a level. Miles was still young and obviously trying to figure out his game. Could have possibly realized his potential and become a world champion at the highest level imaginable. Now that wont happen. You need to respect that.

Tms - I totally disagree with you on the jay williams comparrison. Jay Williams nba transition was just as bogus as Miles career. At least Miles showed enough to get the money he got. Jay got hurt in a motorcycle accident.....probably being a dick, cuz if I'm not mistaken, he didn't have any protection on.....giggity.

Miles had the wrong attitude, but he was on the verge of being somebody, his body just didn't agree.

I do think its funny that Q-rich, his best bud, is also a shell of himself do to a crazy injury. I wonder if Q was in Portland would he have a similiar diagnosis.

Too bad he doesnt have a college degree to fall back on . Here's to hoping he uses his time wisely and gets an education. The millions he has can go by very quickly if he is not smart about managing it.

Boogieman(knickscity)

Let me tell you a story about a kid from East St. Louis,my hometown named Darius Miles (nick named Dirty Miles cause his clothes were always dirty). He grew up in the worst rat infested projects you could ever imagine. His mom was dirt poor, ill and unemployed. He used to play pickup games in Lincoln Park for money and was for the most part unbeatable, a 6'9" linky kid with pg handles and a 7' footers wingspan and Dunking over everybody!

The catch, he wasn't the smartest kid, couldn't score high enough on his ACT to get into the right college program and believe it or not had nobody to direct him as to what to do.

Darius played at the 7up shoot out, a local tourney in St. Louis and dunked on so many other national top rated college prospects and McDonald all Americans when he was in the 11th grade! He had 47 points and 18 rebs in the championship game.

He was invited to the McDonald game his Senior year and put on another dribbling and dunkfest. He was approached by NBA scouts and it changed his life, his moms life and probably genarations of people in his family. FU*$ck college if you are good enough to make it to the pros.

D.Miles gift is basketball not General Studies which is what alot of NBA bound players major in.

I agree that some kids become better players in college, but if they are hard workers which can not be taught, they can achieve great success and develop in the NBA a la J.O'neal, Tmac, Kobe,Garnett,Mont Ellis Andrew Bynum, Rashard Lewis etc... all players who were raw talent their first couple years in the NBA and went on to be great players.

Miles probly had his own warm up routine - some buds, some shots, some weeds...

There is a longer list of kids that flamed out also who might have served best to go to college.

If money is the measurement than the kid is hugely successful and very wealthy.

As a fan it sucks to see wasted draft picks and money (for your favorite team of course)wasted on players that don't produce. I don't begrudge any player getting his money for his value.

Miles road the wave of High School kids that were thought to be the next Kobe or KG, or Tmac and the NBA fell on itself to make sure it was not lost.

Like it was said earlier, Im glad he did not end up a knick.

I feel for the kid and hope that he saved his money. His last contract was pretty good, so I imagine he should be set for life. I hear TMS in his comments that this kid is probably on a yacht somewhere sleeping with fine a** females, so I really cannot feel that sorry for him, but I do feel bad that he cannot pursue his career, especially given that he will not have much to fall back on with no college degree. Jay Williams at least had the Duke connection and came from a well off family. He will probably parley the few mil he got from the Bulls into a law degree or something and still end up making six figures for the rest of his life. Miles is probably not going to have that option.
