This is exactly the way we should be building this team into a championship franchise. This is exactly the same script I been saying all this time. This is the only way to make this team great! I can certainly go through two more losing seasons, if it meant getting more top draft picks and opening up the cap for a superstar. A real superstar! Not that Ron Artest crap.


This is on the AP:
If the Knicks are patient and let some of their longer contracts come off the books, they can have salary cap room in the summer of 2010, when LeBron James and Dwayne Wade could be free agents. But doing so might mean two more losing seasons for a franchise that’s endured seven straight.

“I think that in three years we’ve got a chance to have flexibility in the cap. So that to me is one thing we’ve got to protect,” Walsh said. “But in the meantime, I think that we’ve got to make this present team as competitive as we can make it. And that’s going to be the trick.”

One Thomas never figured out since becoming president in December 2003. The Knicks are a mess in the present with no plan for the future, which is why he lost one of his jobs, just 13 months after Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan gave him a multiyear contract extension.

Here's the math:

LeBron's player option is in the year 2010-11

By the end of the 2009-10 seasons, these Knicks will be off the books:
Q - 9 million
starbury - 21 million
Rose - 7 million
Fred - 3 million

Unless Walsh re-signs any of these players to long terms again, there's 40 million off the books right there.

Just in time to offer LeBron a hefty 25 to 30 million dollar contract, with 10 to 15 million more to go after another great star.

Now what is wrong with this math?

Here's the beautiful part two:

In LeBron's first year in NY, will also be Zach, Curry, James, Crawford and Jeffries last year contracts.

Zach - 17 million
Curry - 11 million
Crawford - 10 million
Jeffries - 6 million
James - 6 million

That's a whopping 50 million off the books right there.

What's not to like about this prospect?

We'll have instant credibility, on our way to the finals, with loads and loads of ****'n cap room and all the bums finally gone!!!

I mean would you people be willing to wait for this?! How could you refuse?!!!

And here's the other nice thing about it. What if we did' win someone like Derrick Rose? We'd still have Lee, Balkman, Collins, Morris, Chandler - the very youth movement foundation I have been dreaming about. And these players will be subject to getting rid of also, if they have not improved by then, but how can anyone argue with all of these prospects I have just mentioned?

We are set' if only we play our cards right and wait two more years. Also gives us some more high draft picks, as we continue to play poorly with this present team. And please, no more trades scenarios. They all basically suck.

Not sure if you paid attention that we are next season about 34 mil. dollars over the cap. So you can not simply replace the salaries, that will be gone with a new contract!
In 2010/2011 we still got 28 mil of salaries on our roster. And this doesnt include the 11 mil players option Curry has nor the 10 mil players option Crawford has!!! The salary cap being around 55 mil, that will leave us with 27 mil of room maximum and this doesnt include new contracts for DLee or Nate or any "new" player (even if it where our picks the next two years, who will due to being Top 5 picks earn some money as well.
So getting under the cap with a team that at the moment is about 40 mil over it is not an easy task as you describe it!!!

The contracts that we really got to get rid of in order to have any shot at a Free Agent in 2010 are ZBo making around 17 mil that year, Curry or Craw, due to their players options.
AND NO new contracts running more than 2 years!!!!!!!!

Okay, I asked and you filled in the blanks. More ****ed up than thought possible. isiah needs to be beat'n up. Being over 28 mil' you say? Not too bad.

This is where Stern can come in handy. He's already said change is coming and if he can somehow help a team like the Knicks to overcome it's cap problem, then that might be the trick. It's like trying to come up with the right kind of money to get out of debt, but the collectors keep you as a prisoner. I believe Stern will have to help the Knicks, even if it means changing some rules. I mean after all, he is' the commissioner.

But keep in mind, if we can get LeBron, in his first year, the rest of the bums will be in their last years. If there is anything left over against us, it shouldn't be much. We are that close and yes, I make it sound easy, because it can be that easy, if we play the cards right. So have hope.

God, I hate isiah more than anything right now. What a dumb ass.

Yet I agree that there is hope!!! Just got to have a plan to follow that actually includes cap space in 2010 which Isiah clearly never had!!!

I don't know everything. I'm not that brilliant. As a matter of fact, I've seen some pretty brilliant things said here by other posters. And there are several that are much more informed about caps and contract situations then I am, obviously. To me it's just all common sense until some lawyer lays some rules out in front of me and I'm no lawyer. I make the common sense statement, you's can fill in the blanks. Thank you all.

I just want to know if there where any lawyers, accountants, mathematicians, prophacy advisers, psychotherapists present when these contracts where being signed. Was there anyone present to warn' of possible disasters if these guys didn't work out??? These are the kind of people running our institutions, do I have that right? I mean I wonder who's manning the nuclear plants right now. Those things are like constant time bombs that need 24/7 attention.

I really like Walsh so far because he has already said in his own words 'we are going to 'try' to make the cap flexible'. In other words, he already knows not to make any promises, because he can already see that it's such a mess, such a financial disaster that's it's gonna take some doing to get the Knicks out of it. And this is before' we can really start to make deals to make this team a contender again.

We have a shot at a top pick in the draft. But we equally have to make fixing the cap problem one of our main goals. This can no longer go on. As a matter of fact, it should of ended when Allan Houston ended. Allan was a great outside shooter, but a financial disaster.

Wade and Lebron arent leaving. Nash is the only star I can think of that switched teams via FA and that was more on Dallas than on Nash. Name another.. ?

Build THIS team. Watching Rose last night he's going to be a great pro. Even more sure thing than Beas and I would def take Rose because of his ability to make others better. Great 2 way player

I don't think that the plan is to put all your eggs in one basket by trying to sign a superstar like LeBron, Wade or Bosh. It's to build this team with the flexibility to be able to add players via free agency if the opportunity presents itself.

Focus on the next two lottery picks and be able to add pieces by every avenue available. It's all about maximizing lottery picks and having flexibility to build this team. Donnie has already stressed this plan by talking about how important these lottery picks are going to be and how the salary cap needs to be fixed. It took all of one afternoon to show that he has more of a plan than Isiah had in 4 1/2 years.

If in June 2010, we know that LeBron or one of the other star players who will be free agents at that time wants to play in NY and if, our pick that June is good enough, we can offer that pick, Zach plus cash to a team with cap room who will take the package.

That's a given, but what are the pieces that are going to be avaiable?

You want a sure thing? Push for a superstar like LeBron to come to NY. No more games, no more picking little unknown pieces. It's clear that we need a true superstar in NY to build around. It's already been proven time and time again and the Knick brass never did figure it out.

Here's my case:

Michael Jordan picked up (luckily) by chicago. They built around him and won six championships.

Tim Duncan picked up by San Antonio. They built around him and won four championships so far.

Kareem Abdul Jabaar & Magic Johnson picked up by L.A. Lakers. They built around them and won five championships.

Isiah Thomas picked up by Detroit Pistons. They built around him and won two championships.

Larry Bird picked up by Boston Celtics. They built around him and won three championships.

The same can be said about Bill Russel, Wilt Chamberlain.

Look at the Knicks:
Picked up what they thought would bring championships -
starbury
Francies
Zach
Curry
Houston
Starks
Mason
Crawford
Larry Johnson
Dice
Spreewell
Camby

That was suppose to be the best talent we could get and most of it was junk. A few good pieces to build with, but certainly not superstar caliber.

The Knicks instead are in major debt, with very low talent, because of the attempt over the years to win championships while being too short and definately not as talented. Stop thinking small and think bigger!!! Nothing is impossible! We can have anything we want, once the money is good again and we have someone who knows what talent is.
