New York Daily News -
Mark Jackson is emerging as the favorite to replace Isiah Thomas on the Knicks bench if he is relieved of his duties by new president Donnie Walsh, the New York Daily News is reporting.

According to the Daily News there is some sentiment that Walsh may look to hire Jackson as his general manager, according to a source close to Walsh.

Is Donnie Walsh a UltimateKnicks.com poster?

I want Action Jackson as coach. Next year is a throw away year anyways. Let him get his feet wet right away. I am also interested in Greg Anthony as the GM and Patrick Ewing and Clyde in the coaching staff.

Yup..All Knicks all the time!

Personally I would turn the coaching duties over to Dave Hanners and see what he can do. He did very well with the kids in summer league and there's no reason he couldn't do well as a coach next year with the players (regardless of w/l)

As to Mark Jackson I wouldn't mind giving a guy like Mark a shot - as you say next year and probably the year after are indeed "throwaway" years as we look to get under the cap and make some of Isiah's mistakes disappear. So it's not like we'd be ruining our chances at anything big if Jackson were to bomb.

Greg Anthony: No Thanks.

Mark as GM? No Thanks I'd rather let Walsh do that and just have an assistant to handle the tedious stuff such as paperwork and putting out initial feelers to other teams for trades. Making the majority of Isiah's mistakes go away - while infusing new talent with any remaining players - is a very tough job. Not a job for the inexperienced that's for certain.

Ewing? The guy is merely a big man coach. That's where his talent ends. I really see no reason to bring him here.

Clyde? Like Ewing - I wouldn't mind either or both of these guys being TRAINERS in practice - I think that is where they could help. On the bench coaching? Not so much IMO besides I don't think Clyde wants to coach - he just wants to help out .... and Ewing wants to be a HEAD COACH something he is clearly not ready for.

I know one thing: Regardless of who we hire? Enough with the 5-year deals. We're targeting 2010 in terms of player contracts and we need to do the same with coaches and trainers. Give guys 2-year deals.

Why?

For the Summer of 2010 is the time when we can begin to build up from the ashes left behind by Isiah. Therefore there is no reason to bring in anyone that might carry over into that brand new year - for if things don't go well these next two season in terms of change then there's no reason to carry those people over into that brand new 2010-2011 season of hope.

I'll give Donnie some credit as he has hired coaches in the past that has no experience. Even Isiah was not so bad in INdy, but he takes some riskes and just does not starphuch or just hire retreads for the sake of safety.

He want's Jax, thats good enough for me.

Show Isiah the door. It serves no purpose other than his humiliation to keep him. Not that it would bother me, but your not fully moving ahead if you still have him in the basement.

I agree. It seems Donnie has the track record on going against popular opinion. Him picking The Rifle Man and Cheryl Miller were just 2 examples that Donnie mentioned in his Press Conf. Giving Larry Legend a shot as coach is another example.

Question..JVG and Action Jackson are good friends. Would Mark as GM and JVG back as coach be acceptable to Knick fans?

I totally disagree with this Mark Jackson as coach for the Knicks. He hasn't done diddly since he left as a player. He is a broad caster for goodness sake. He isn't even coaching as an assistant. I'm in favor of an ex-player who has done some coaching as an assistant. I'm not going for Jackson who basically is an empty vessel in the coaching field.

If you are going to hire a someone then hire Ewing over Jackson atleast Ewing is trying to stay with basketball through coaching.

My choice would be to bring in Carisle, he is a very good coach who knows defense and very good with the X's and O's of basketball.

I think it can be done. Doc Rivers and Larry Bird are examples of ex-players with high BBall IQ that had success as HC's without prior experience. Also, the fact that next year is a throw away year gives us a a better chance of him to succeed. I don't like Carlisle in the simple fact that he is not a Knick. Popcorn man has hurt me deep and I don't trust anyone outside the Knick family right now.

Carisle is as much a Knicks as Mark Jackson. If you have forgotten Caarisle served as a player for the Knicks in the 90's.

He played for 1 season and played in 26 games. I think not.

Action Jackson was drafed by the Knicks and played here for 5 seasons. He also won ROY here. Yes. He is a Knick more than Carlisle.

Jerome James is a Knicks for life I guess then. People need to give up on he's a Knick and all BS. Bringing in players who played for the Knicks in the past is nice but you have to make a smart decision. Are you willing to take a chance on a coach who has never done a bit of coaching over someone who has atleast accomplished some good work. Remember it took Doc Rivers some time before he became a decent coach and some people believe that Doc Rivers isn't the mastermind behind the Celtic recent success, people have taken notice on Tom Thibadeau. Mark Jackons would be a nice change of pace but be real about what he has done. Coaching is tough I don't think the Knicks can continue to bring in unexperienced coaches like Isiah even with some work with Pacers as a coach he isn't very good at all.

Mark Jackson is 20,000,000 more of a Knicks than Carlisle or James, and he is a salt of the earth NYC born and bred St. Alabn's second best PG (Bob Cousy is the best.).

But none of that means anything. What does matter is does he have the chops to be a good NBA coach. I say yes. When you watch how Jackson dissected the game since he was a rookie, hell, since he was at Bishop Loughlin and SJU! The way he used his mental game to extend his longevity while still being an effective player.

So you know he understands the game. We know he has the creative understanding of offense.

One can predict that he will get the respect of his players, especially his PG, maybe even Marbury(I doubt it.).

I think the question is will he be a good game coach?

I can't see why not.

Let's give him a chance!

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

I"m sorry but names like Jackson, Ewing and Greg Anthony being mentioned as our development staff?!?!?

Gotta be a belated April Fools joke. I suppose if I had to, I'd choose Jackson of the three for coach. But that's only if I had' to.

Oh stop it! Jackson is a good coach at best. There are better coaches and we need someone to start instilling defense on this club again. That has been one of our bigger problems on the floor.

And welcome back oohah.

I'm behind Jackson as a GM if Donnie takes him under his wing.

As a coach I am a bit nervous. I'd be a lot more comfortable wwith a guy like Fratello or Hubie Brown as coach for 2 years or so with Jax as an assistant and the GM job going to someone like the assistant from San Antonio.

I think Jackson would be a great coach. He provides Hubie Brown type insight into games when he broadcasts. He wasn't a star in the NBA but was very good. He knows how important team play is. He knows how important defense is. He knows how important chemistry is. He also has tremendous character and a NY pedigree. He can handle the media and pressure. He has the chance to be a fantastic coach. The Knicks need to rebuild relationships with their fan base and bring back pride. Jackson could learn on the job because next year will be one where expectations are not high for success. I think it also needs to be pointed out that Jackson played for great coaches. Carnesseca, Pitino, Riley, Brown, and Van Gundy. I know that whatever happens, I want Isiah gone and I want the next coach to emphasize defense first.

Here's a question. 'If Walsh is willing to wait to free up the cap and let most of these players ride until LeBron is free, then why' would he need to hire a GM? Especially if he is' the GM?

The Answer Man Would Be LOT Less Comfortable With a guy like Fratello or Hubie Brown as coach But It Don't Really Matter If The Answer Man Is Comfortable, It Only Matters That The Knicks Players Respond To The Next Head Coach

Q 4949 - If Walsh is willing to wait to free up the cap and let most of these players ride until LeBron is free, then why' would he need to hire a GM? Especially if he is' the GM?

A. Walsh is President of Basketball Operations. Not the GM. Decisions on cap space, just like team identity and playing personality are componenets of an overall strategy. He will have oversight and delegate the execution of that strategy to his executive staff in the form of cohesive tactics, such as research (Asst GM) and intelligence on potential transactions (GM) and game preparation (head coach)

So, 4949, while "he is willing to wait to free up the cap and let most of these players ride" (say what?) Walsh is still 67. By the time the "magical" 2010-11 season arrives, he will be 71.

He better pace himself.

if they hire jax, walsh would be smart enough to align him with great assistant coaches like he did for bird. bird had great assistant coaches who were specialists in either defense and offense to help make his job easier. walsh would do that for jax so he too would be in a position to succeed. i think also we need to bear with jax through 2010/2011 season an see what he does with a good lineup then. true the next 2 years are throwaway years but we need to see what he does with a great lineup, like what boston did with doc rivers. also if we get derrick rose this year with the second all-time assist leader in the nba, believe me he will benifit greatly.
