"I obviously wasn't in Isiah's plans," Marbury said. "He talked about the guards going to be here next year. Maybe I'll be in Donnie's plans. If not, it will bother me not to play basketball here. I feel I got something to prove. I feel like I'm motivated in a different aspect after what I went through this year. I don't want to play anywhere else. I feel I have five years left at a high level. I'm 31, not 40."

There was something else in the article where Walsh says Marbury is a key player.. Isn't this quite the turn of events?

"I really want to sit down with [Marbury] at some point," Walsh said. "I know he was injured. I know about what happened earlier in the season. I do want to sit down and know what the issues are because he's a good player. I don't know where Marbury is and he's a key player."
Sounds like Walsh is just gathering information at this point.

I like to think the last thing that went through his head - other than that bullet - was to wonder how the hell Stephon Marbury ever got the best of him.

Marbury is key to our rebuilding effort. His expiring contract will get rid of $20 mil in the salary cap. He damn sure is not key to our future beyond next season.

I get the feeling Marbury won't be bought out but will be here to play out the last year of his contract. It's not a bad move to give him the opportunity to play good soldier and prove himself so he can find another team after next season. Next year is a wash for the Knicks anyway.

Theyll either use Marbury for the year or trade him for a good serviceable max contract[like knyon martim or maybe oneal] that goes 2-3 years where we take 1st round pick[s] back as well.
That is the going rate for giving team that kind of cap space.

Marbs is still under contract and he is right, the dude is only 31. Whatever.......all I know is Walsh is in charge and not Isiah.

If Marbs does stay, Isiah can't coach this team......that would be stupid.

Isiah can't coach the team anymore, no matter what. That's just stupid.

Isiah shouldn't be allowed to come into the Garden again without paying for a ticket. Even then that might be too much access.

Guys- Marbury said the same friggin thing after Larry Brown got run out of town.

Based on past performance, his 'need to prove myself' assertion means nothing. He has learned nothing. And he might be 31, but he moves like a 40 year old out on the court.

If there is a way to move his contract to get a good player back or add picks or help in off loading Zach or Curry, then great.

Otherwise, he should be bought out to clear a roster spot for a young NBDL type undrafted player.

marbury is a "key player" for a couple of reasons, namely his $20 mill. contract. he is an asset that could be traded for draft picks and cap room or we can wait him out and receive some cap releif when he leaves. he might play well or he might not this year. either way i think we will draft someone anyway to replace him ( rose, bayless or mayo) and he will not be a knick by 2009-2010 season, the season of purge.

There's two reasons to want Marbury "to stay".

1. If Jermaine ONeal were truly healthy (and he expires 2010 just how we want our cap to line up), and we have a trade lined up to get Zach out of town, then you trade Marbury for ONeal.

2. Buy out Marbury and let his 21M come off the books next summer.

There's no other reason, except of course, if we were to get Crawful out of town and go back to 0304 and let Marbury gun away and see where it goes and then let him expire at season's end.

Marbury is no longer a threat IMO. This team is going nowhere special next season with or without him. As long as he is not recycled into any new players that extend beyond 2010 there is no problem here anymore.

Zach is the #1 problem on our team now. That's the clown that has to go before anyone else.

If Walsh is planning to rejuvenate Marbury again as one of his first mainstay moves then we're screwed yet again. Not in case it's for 1yr and 1yr only. They better not try and keep him here past his contract.

Im sure marbury is sincere and not wanting his legacy to be "Crap Space".

Buying out Him and Isiah at the same time is a lot of money!

Best thing for Marbury is to get him in shape so he can have a career after, contribute to the knicks next year, or as a trading chip dump either this summer or into next season.

His juice card is dry now as he enters into a contract year.

This is Walsh talking Marbury up so he can raise his value in the slightest.

Two choices, neither includes buying him out:

1) To the degree he sincerely wants to play, a motivated Marbury could be a good thing, both while he's doing it for the Knicks next season and possibly increasing trade value beyond an expiring contract.

2) To the degree he continues to be a 31 year old spoiled, self centered child, you tell him to stay home (a la Bulls & Tim Thomas), then you deal him at the deadline or let the contract expire.

What happened to Marbury playing for Italy??

Even if Walsh came in with the thoughts of keeping Marbury which I doubt. Since it doesn't help the goal of cap flexibility for 2010. After watching Marbury for a season, he will change his mind.

Not nescessarily even watching. After having a coach complain 5 times a day, he will definitely change his mind.
