Pacers have a major news conference scheduled for 3:30. Maybe Donnie Walsh or Bird is stepping down. Is the door still open for Donnie to NY?

The Indiana Pacers have called a press conference for a "major" announcement at 3:30 p.m. today. Both Donnie Walsh and Larry Bird are expected to attend, along with Pacers owner Herb Simon.

It has been correctly reported that Simon met with Walsh on Friday. Initially Simon told confidants that he did not expect to make a decision on the front office soon, but suddenly today the Pacers announced the press conference at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Walsh's future with the Pacers will have some ripple effects with the Knicks, who have had a "very preliminary" conversation with Walsh about a possible opening in New York. Walsh, 67, is more inclined to want to stay in Indiana, but there was some thought that Simon did not want to go forward with the current power structure. It was believed Simon was going to choose between Walsh and Bird, but with both men expected to attend the news conference, there is some curiosity about the speculation that one will emerge over the other.

If it is revealed that Walsh will leave the organization after the season ends, you can expect the Walsh-to-New York talk to go into overdrive once again.

Stay tuned.

I think Bird, an original Indiana boy, would most likely stay in Indy. He's younger first of all. And the native New Yorker would come hom. But he may not want to, because he doesn't want to work under dolan.
I'll never trust this' team again.

I'm not a Walsh lover. I would have preferred West. But Indiana blew it. Bird was one of the all time great players, but he just isn't very bright.

As soon as the PC is over I hope there's a first class jet from New York waiting for him to board A.S.A.P.

I would prefer Colangelo, but I'll certainly take Donnie Walsh. This is the first step for the best news us Knicks fans have had in a LONG while.

I just hope he has full control over the long-term direction of the organization and is allowed to do real bebuilding. If he doesn't, then hiring him means nothing.

Have you spoken to someone and is Isiah out as coach too?

What makes everyone think Donnie's coming to New York? He may retire, and who knows, it might be West.
I'll never trust this' team again.

Be careful what you ask for here. Isiah and Walsh are buddy buddies--you think he would take this job as an Isiah replacement or as a new voice with Isiah still at the helm?
