The Indiana Pacers have called a press conference for a "major" announcement at 3:30 p.m. today. Both Donnie Walsh and Larry Bird are expected to attend, along with Pacers owner Herb Simon. It has been correctly reported that Simon met with Walsh on Friday. Initially Simon told confidants that he did not expect to make a decision on the front office soon, but suddenly today the Pacers announced the press conference at Conseco Fieldhouse. Walsh's future with the Pacers will have some ripple effects with the Knicks, who have had a "very preliminary" conversation with Walsh about a possible opening in New York. Walsh, 67, is more inclined to want to stay in Indiana, but there was some thought that Simon did not want to go forward with the current power structure. It was believed Simon was going to choose between Walsh and Bird, but with both men expected to attend the news conference, there is some curiosity about the speculation that one will emerge over the other. If it is revealed that Walsh will leave the organization after the season ends, you can expect the Walsh-to-New York talk to go into overdrive once again. Stay tuned. PURE KNICKS LOVE
