This is the key point of what Stern said in an article earlier: 'ownership is prepared to spend money and that there's going to be great change for next year'.

Here's what I think can happen with those very words:

I think dolan will spend some mega bucks and turn this team right side up again.

I think the new management is gonna say good-bye to old luggage:
starbury
James
Rose

That's just under 35 million freed up right there.

We have a potential top five draft coming.

And up coming Un-restricted free agents for:
2008-09
Elton Brand – center
Gilbert Arenas – point guard

And 2009-10
Kobe Bryant - shooting guard

Meanwhile, we can pick up a couple of European players and be the diverse team that we so desperately need.

Why wouldn't this work? Why is something like this impossible? Stern did say there are major changes coming for this club. Why else would the Commissioner of the NBA specifically say that about any team, unless something really big was coming our way?

With the young pieces we have now, and with those' guys on our team, we'd be as good as Boston or any team really. And if we added Kobe, with a few more great years, we'd certainly have a shot. Not to mention a few more bums coming off of our books, by the time it all hapens.

I think it's time to go after Arenas, because now there's talk of him going to L.A. If we are ever gonna compete again, then we indeed need big change and I mean 'really big change'!

We do not have the assets to pull a Celtics. I'll add more later.

But dolan is prepared to spend money. This is something he said he wasn't going to do and Stern has confirmed it.

These three could bring New York all the scoring and defense it could ever want. And with Kobe added on, we'd be a potential champion for sure.
I'll never trust this' team again.

Why would we need assets if dolan buys out these contracts and offers these noted players big contracts? I'm convinced that dolan is gonna spend the money. There's no other reason for Stern's statement.

I find it interesting how Boston had no assets and went and got Allan AND' Keven! I find it interesting how L.A. has no assets and they go after Gasol, after Bynum goes down.

And now I find it interesting again how Gasol goes down and suddenly L.A. has assets again to make a pitch for Arenas?

What lame ass excuses do we have for not having any assets?
I'll never trust this' team again.

well on reason would be that players bought out still count against the cap.

I don't believe that for a second. Excuses, excuses, excuses.

Then pay him to play for someone else. It's that simple.

What you said goes completely against what Stern said. So how can anything count against the cap, if' he says the Knicks are prepared to spend? Doesn't make any sense. That's why I point that out as the key, at the top of the post.

I don't understand what you're saying. What Stern said about spending is irrelevant in terms of where we are. First off, this isn't the NFL. We can't cut everyone and sign the best players on the market. We don't have any cap space for the next 2 years at the very least. Second, we do not have the assets to pull a Celtics. Why do I say that? The Celtics had Al Jefferson(better than anyone on this team and putting up 21 and 11 this year), Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, and many other prospects available for trade. They traded them for veteran players. Kevin Garnett just so happened to want out at that time and they took advantage of it. They also got Ray Allen from the rebuilding Sonics. 2 things: There is no KG out there(and probably no Allen) and we don't have the same pieces to land one of them, let alone both. Most of our players have ridiculous, untradeable contracts that nobody wants. And our young players? Well they're good role players but nobody is giving away their franchise for David Lee and Nate Robinson.

The Celtics had a combination of luck and good position to do what they did. We never really have any luck and we certainly don't have a good position. We cannot turn this thing around in 1 or 2 years. The rebuilding process will be done and it needs to be. NO MORE QUICK FIXES. It always fails here and it will continue to do so. REBUILD.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

excuses? bought out players still count against the cap. if what you say were the case then any team over the cap could just waive all the non-producing players to get under it again, but it's not that simple. in the NBA contracts are guaranteed (well generally speaking anyway).

Of course it also depends on how much money the player is willing to walk away from. but something tells me that guys like Curry, Randolph, and Jeffries, won't agree to a buyout for an amount significantly less than (if less than at all) the amount of money they're currently owed. They basically have no incentive to.

49, we won't have the cap space to sign any notable free agents other than MLE guys until 2011 (unless u plan on allowing D Lee & Nate walk for nothing when their rookie contracts expire)... buying out players doesn't remove their contracts off the cap, therefore it's a senseless absolute last resort move, & doesn't do much to help the roster other than opening up a roster spot... in the Knicks' case, buying out expiring contracts the past couple seasons may have benefitted us by removing the bullets from Isiah's trade gun, but not much else... when guys like Zach, Curry, Jefferies & Q Rich's contracts come off the books is when the Knicks will have any real ability to target big name free agents... Ron Artest is probably the biggest name we have any sort of chance to sign until that time using our MLE.

Stern can proclaim that Isiah Tomas intentionally destroyed the Knicks (which is no-brainer).
To mitigate the damage Knicks will be given a status of expansion team (we are paling like expansion team anyway) with ability to let all contracts expire this year and start from scratch.
Dolan will pay to compensate the difference between contracts this group of garbage-man will get on other teams and current contracts...

Boy I tell ya. You folks are so full of excuses. You guys have no idea what quality is and maybe you never did. Boston did it for years and it took some years before they are doing it again. L.A. Lakers have been doing it for decades!!! The bulls just got real lucky when they picked up jordan, so they don't count. But the teams who win, bring real super stars to their teams and they won an NBA championship or at least knocked on the door for one.

The point I'm trying to make is when are we gonna stop making excuses and start fighting for real solutions. Fuck dolan! It starts with the fans and if you keep beating your heads against the wall trying to argue for small fry type players, then you'll get even less. The Celtics and Lakers have won all of those championships, all of those decades, years with some of the greatest players, because they went out and they got them. They didn't make any excuses as to why it would be impossible! They made it happen. So what's our excuse??? Seriously! Not one of you would defend what I'm saying. Why? I bring up rediculous scenarios to improve this team because I dare to dream big! Why can't you? Why can't we have Tim Duncan or Lebron James or Kobe Bryant on our team??? I don't want to hear about no dame capped out bull****.

I look at the successful Boston Celtics and the successful L.A. Lakers and I say 'in order to win, you have to develop and maintain a competative team to have a chance and the only way to do that is to get some dame superstars on this team - now! We're not competative at all. We haven't been since the Ewing years. You have to maintain that to be able to acquire new quality players on a yearly basis.

I don't want hear about 'what we can't do' (cry, cry, cry). What I want to hear is about bringing some real talent to this team and I mean top notch talent!!! Otherwise what I can guarantee to you's is 'we will always suck until someone finally figures it out'.

You have the two perfect examples. Boston and L.A. That's the way we should have been doing it all of these years. They have everything and we have nothing but a lousy two championships for this franchise and we been around for decades! A complete and utter disgrace for a City this big, with so much to give! We are truely a disgrace overall. Go look up our accomplishments and compare them to L.A., Boston and even chicago. Compare individual players. Their numbers blow our numbers away. I'm hoping isiah and his gang of nitwits are the last of it. We need real change in the brass to bring change to this team. And that's exactly what we fans should be demanding! But what I dont' want to hear anymore is 'I can't do it' (cry, cry , cry). We sure as hell can!!!

Who on this board agrees with this? I don't want to hear excuses!!!
I'll never trust this' team again.
If Boston can do it, then why can't we?
