I feel this could be a real cool thread considering the state of our team. We really don't need to waste too much more of our breath on them until the draft. In the meantime we could talk about the upcoming playoffs or other topics such as this one I created. There are a few of us who post here and have zero clue about NYC, me being foremost. I do know a few things but nothing more than the average Joe Blow who isn't from there. So I'd like to be schooled by anyone willing, to connect descriptions with these physical 3D Models. I know I could Google Earth or use Microsoft Virtual 3D but I thought, "hey why not inquire in this format".

After the thread French made it got me thinking of doing the same with my Lady. We want to take a vacation somewhere this yr and very well may choose to go to NYC. From French's thread I learned a little but without physical visuals it's kind of hard to grasp the overlay of the Metropolitan area. So I perused the Net a little bit, looking over some things including searching for Wallpapers of the NYC and found a real kick butt Panoramic one that looks like a shot of some upcoming action flick. It's seriously ridiculous. Anyway, as I was searching I came across IMO some very cool 3D Models of various shots from the major Metropolitan area. I want you all to break them down as best you can. I imagine these models are located somewhere possibly in New York, probably at some Museum. Looking at the Models I realize trying to describe details may be difficult because no matter how comfortable one may be with the area the Models show detail but also show clutter(NY is cluttered and a CLUSTERPHUCH). As best you can break one/several/each picture down and be absolutely as detailed as possible keeping in mind I know very little about the area. I'll proceed to post several Model shots, some shots duplicate various areas of the City(Cities) but I'll enumerate each Model Shot and you can take which ever number(s) you like to take me to school on. I hope to see full participation because it'll give some insight to who pays attention to detail to what they see and also what they know about their home area.

Oh another Note these shots as you will see include major land masses across the bridges except not with as great of detail in the shots. Regardless feel free to comment on these areas too and I mean everything from Body of waters, bridges, building names, parks, public housing, cities(buroughs), etc etc

most of the shots are of downtown/Tribeca/Battery park/South Street Seaport/Wall street/Chinatown/Soho/Village (the shots with the 3 bridges - Brooklyn Bridge, Manhatten Bridge & Williamsburg Bridge)

u used to be able to see the World Trade Center smack dap in the middle of all that, but sadly no more obviously... lots of places to go shopping, eat & shop down in Soho/Chinatown/Village area... young people tend to hang out in this area.

some of the others are shots of midtown, w/the Empire State Building being the most prominent landmark (shot 9)

the big green mass in the middle is Central Park... around there u'll be able to access the major museums (Natural History, the Met) & eat at Tavern On the Green (famous restaurant inside Central Park)... taking ur girl on a carriage ride through there is pretty cool if u can afford the 50 bucks or so it's gonna run u.

i have no idea what area the last image is of... looks like Brooklyn & Queens to me.

^ world trade center, r.i.p.

You used to be able to see that **** from most roof tops in the entire NYC and boardering jersey. It was an amazing sight to see.

I used to tell any tourist......if you wanna know where you are, just look up. If you can see the world trade you were looking south. If you could see the empire state building you were looking @ mid-town. Just to give a grip of where you are in the city. From those two spots you could navigate until you hit central park.....they call it "central" for a reason. Above central park, you are on your own!

I just wanna say that NYC aint what it used to be. There was a time where you couldn't just take the train, get off, skip and frolic like pansies wherever you wanted. NYC had prominant neighborhoods in manhatten. Crime and culture. It was better that way. To me there was more order. Now its just turning into a whore house of trend and commercial caca.

Again I don't feel like googling, but the highest area of land above sea level in manhatten if 172nd street and broadway. Living over there you don't notice.......unless you are on the highway looking up. I used to live over there.

"Manhatten was built on cemitaries where the blacks were burried" - talib kweli said that in a song.......its also true.

African burial ground - here is a nytimes article, good read for those that had no idea.

Above central park, you are on your own!

That's actually a NY Tourism commandment.

True, Columbia University is basically buying up all of West Harlem. Central Harlem is condos after condos after condos (espeically on 7th and 8th Avenue).

East Harlem though is not I would consider tourist friendly.

Don't forget Central Park!

And if you're a NY'er you might as well hit the museum that hosts this crazy exhibit!

The Queens Museum
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

Gentrification is a bastard, ain't it?

I would say those folks are probably going to get pushed into the Bronx but even Mott Haven is getting hit.

TMS, Spree, and K22 thanks for some of the input so far but I was wondering if I could get greater detail.

Take for instance you listed the the names of the bridges but what bridge is what? Plus whats the name of the bridge that's located Midtown that goes across to QEEENS? Is that Queens Bridge? What's the name of the land mass under that bridge? Some of you listed building names in the pic sets but what about others? Take for instance I can see the United Nations building located along the bank of Midtown adjacent to East River in pic 13 but what are the names of a couple buildings in close proximity of it? I found some of these things out by looking them up just now. There are so many other things I like to know..... like the Name of the streets the bridges run into once you come off the off/on ramps? What are the names of the Red Ghettos(any Ghetto for the matter in the pics) near Lower Manhattan that border the East River?

That's the 59th Street bridge -- one end lets out on 59th Street on the East side of Manhattan. The other end lets out in Queensbridge (home of Ron Artest, Mob Deep, etc.) It passes over Roosevelt Island.

This is the Williamsburg (far left), Manhattan (middle) and Brooklyn Bridge (right). The Williamsburg bridge goes from Delancey Street and Clinton in the Lower East Side of Manhattan to Williamsburg Brooklyn. The Manhattan Bridge goes from Canal street around Chinatown and Soho in Manhattan to Flatbush Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Bridge goes from the Financial District in Manhattan to Brooklyn, but I'm not sure what that neighborhood is called.

Yeah, that's the Queens-Midtown Bridge which leads to Queensbridge, aka Crazy Ron-Ron's stomping grounds. The island underneath is Roosevelt Island.

I can tell you the slanted building to the west of the bridge is the Citigroup Center at 53rd/Lexington. If you follow south from there to the pointed building, I THINK that's the Chrysler Building at 42nd/Lexington.

I walked around Roosevlet Island for the first time the other day. It was strange...nothing there has a name- the places seem to be just called "Bank," "Chinese Restaraunt," and "General Store." It's weird there, but its pretty cool to be right on the river like that.

in picture 12, if you look to our right,of the WTC, i think that is the Brooklyn bridge. I went to HS right next to the Bklyn Bridge.. Murry Bergtraum HS... the south street seaport is not too far away, city hall is down the street, china town is also very close, all within decent walking distance....
