Whatever happened to this guy? Before he was traded to the Knicks he was averaging between 16 and 21 ppg and 6 assists every year on nearly 40 mpg. Then he comes to the Knicks and goes 11 and 3.5 on 28 mins. Now with Houston, he's going 5.5 and 3 in 20 mpg. This guy is only 31! How did he crumble so fast? Are there some injuries in play here? I mean we all know he's a prima donna, bad teammate, non-team player, yada-yada, but how did he get so ineffective at the things he previously did well?

I think the Knicks destroy players' careers. Quentin Richardson was never this bad but when he came here he played like utter crap.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

Yeah, you notice how people suddenly lose family to violence and get tied up and robbed, as soon as they start playing for us?
I'll never trust this' team again.

That's what happens when you get by on athleticism so much more heavily than skill.

also what happens when you're collecting a huge contract & lose the passion you once had to be a great player.

Francis's greatest asset was his speed and leaping ability... as his knees got banged up and he aged he clearly lost a step (or 2). He went from being "the Franchise" to "the Albatross".

i think you guys are totally right about losing athleticism and not having a game to compensate. plus he was a total pain in the ass teammate on the level of a stephon marbury.

Steve Francis has a drinking problem and his skillz has eroded over the yrs this is why the magic got rid of him For Trevor Ariza(how the mighty have fallen).

John Lucas has residential program in Texas for doped out athletes who he promises a second chance to, Remember roy tarpley, richard dumas oh how about Lewis Lloyd. Francis was a great player, but that program runs about $1,000.00 per day on average for a month. There is conditioning, counseling, prayer and oh yeah, Lucas has his motivational TALK that did not work when he coached.

Francis in 2006 :"My daughter just turned 1," Francis said. "I'm getting ready for my wedding coming up (on Sunday). I'm 29 now. I think it helps to have that type of stability. I think it helps ... knowing I'm going to go home every night to see my family. And in basketball, it helps me stay focused." ( what where you focused on before stevie ?)

John Lucas made comments about steve in 2006> Steve is as gifted an athlete as LeBron (James) or Kobe (Bryant), any of them," Lucas said. "Every year he doesn't make the All-Star Game is an embarrassment.

When you skills erode this quick, injuries or substance abuse is usually the main culprits.

In a time and day, where athleticism was the new flavor of the month, steve was just what the league wanted. He was ONCE traded for T-MAC and then Trevor Ariza...You do the math.

At 6'3 and dunking on front court players with ease is what espn and the league adored after guys like jordan were about to retire.

Yup.

Anyone with outerworldly athletic talent were called future stars. It didn't matter that there only known skills were to be able to take guys off the dribble and jump real high. In the team game Steve Francis was horrendous but no one seemed to notice.

Steve Francis actually does have symptoms of alcoholism. The yellow eyes and the reddish skin. He gained weight. Cried in public over playing time.....

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

I can't fault the guy cuz he might be dealing with depression. A millionare, star athlete....family. Why be depressed? Only the mind of the individual can explain that.

Steve could very well just be a bitch. Hope the dude is ok though.

hmm, dunno if i agree w/u on that one... 22 / 7 / 6 type #'s in his best year are nothing to sneeze at... at his best i thought Francis was pretty dynamic & definitely would consider him to be a very good player... not at the elite level but at least on the 2nd or 3rd tier of stars in the game playing during the time.

He was a great numbers guy but an awful team guy. Awful. What you saw in NY was just an unathletic version of what he was in Houston. He didn't come here and forget how to play the game. He never knew how to play it. The loss in athleticism just put the spotlight on it.
