Hey guys,

I will be going to NYC with my girlfriend from April 13-20. It will be her first time in the US so I plan to really introduce her to the American culture... we'll just be doing so many things during that week, I can't wait. I have a few questions and hope you guys can help :

- I haven't booked our hotel yet. What website should I use to get rates in USD (since the exchange rate with euro is great for me at the moment)
- which area should we target for the hotel (I plan to spend around $150-$230 per night) note that we'll be using the subway quite a lot to move around the city
- I'd like to take her to one or two sports events : Knicks home finale agaist the Celts (April 14) and one of the two Yankess-Red Sox game at Yankee Stadium. Which website should I use to get tix ? I know I'll have to pay a premium and not go through official websites...
- is there any special event going on in NYC that particular week ?

Thanks for your help and advice, they'll be very much appreciated.

There's constantly special events going on. You just have to decide which one you wanna go to.

Here's some information I found helpful, when I travel:
hotels.com
travelocity.com

For New York City information, try:
nycvisit.com
nyctourist.com

newyorkmag.com (New York Magazine) also has some interesting neighborhood and historical stories, as well as exclusive stories and events going on.

Yankee Stadium offers a tour of locker room, dugout, etc. Cool stuff, if you want to get into the nitty gritty of it. You might wanna also check out other message boards (from this City) to ask people what are some of the places they would recommend in the neighborhoods. This city is so exciting and always' busy. There's just too much to do and not enough time.

As far as a Yankee-Boston game and a Knick game lined up in the same week? You'll have to pull up the upcoming schedules. Network with others who've been here. Prefferably, people you know and ask them' where they went. Good luck and welcome.

I'm trying to get a good deal on the hotel. I only want it to be close to a subway station, so we can move around easily and not be too far away from the good places. I've found some good ones in Long Island, but do you think it'd be too far away from downtown ?

There are also plenty of good deals in the meadowlands and new jersey, but I guess that sucks too ;)

Any advice on which area to stay ? Should I only look in Manhattan, Brooklyn, ... ?

Stay in Manhattan bro, Brooklyn is a long ways away for tourism. If you live to far away from Midtown, you will spend most of your time traveling.

Exactly. Stay close to the action. But try travelocity.com and check with your fight. You might be able to find a hotel included in your trip, at a reasonable price. Especially seeing that you are International. Planning well in advance helps also. Prices are better, just as long as it isn't during special events, like Christmas or some huge convention. And there are hotels that are very reasonable. You just have to look for them and keep on looking until you find something. The prices go up and down.

Are you both travelers, who are just looking for a place to stay for a night, or do you want a nice, securer kind of place? What about Hostels? But try nyctourist.com - they have a listing of hotels, and show the price per night. Check it daily and you will see that the prices come down sometimes. Again, keep trying travelocity.com. If push comes to shove, you might actually have to pay a little extra, just for the convenience. And that's worth it. And make sure you understand their policies.

I know what you mean about New Jersey and Long Island. They do have cheaper prices, but for what your willing to spend a night, you can find some places that will meet your price.

If' you decide that your not going to go out just yet on the first day. If' your not going to hit the ground running, then maybe you'll want to stay a night in New Jersey or Long Island. Or maybe even in Brooklyn for that matter, just to help keep your prices down. And then have another hotel waiting for you in Manhattan. Just another thought.

Also, there might be deals in which if you traveled with other people (a group you can hook up with), who might be coming down to New York, about the same week, there might' be some kind of package that gets all of you a cheaper price to get down here. The best I can give you is some brain stroming and for you to research all of your prospects. Again, good luck.

If you both like to walk, then you'll save even more. A great place for walking. If I see something else (or think of something else) I'll post it.

I don't know about that. Downtown Brooklyn is becoming pretty touristy lately.

I suspect some Brooklynites want to keep tourism out. I agree with keeping it centered mostly in Manhatten, but Brook is coming into it's own. We'll see.

If you've never been to NY and since you're from another country, I highly recommend you do not stay anywhere other than Manhattan. Although the LIRR (Long Island Railroad) is very convenient, and takes you right to Penn Station, (under MSG) in the end you'll end up spending the same amount of money. (costs of LIRR and cab to and from train) Plus things can go wrong, like you getting lost. That is why you should not stay in Brooklyn. First of all, Brooklyn can be a nightmare if you don't know your way around, and secondly, the trains into Manhattan can be confusing and you could end up someplace you don't want to be.

For $200 a night, you should be able to get something decent in Manhattan. Plus there is so much to do 24 hours a day that staying anywhere else would not be as fun.

u probably won't be able to score any Yankees-Red Sox tickets on Ticketmaster, but i'd try there first... if not, then buy them off Stubhub or some other ticket resale site... u can get them at the Stadium too from scalpers but that's an iffy proposition & you won't know where you're sitting til u get there if u can get them at all.

have fun in NY w/your girl.

Major is right. You have to think about getting lost and ending up somewhere you don't want to. Study the maps before you come on down.

Here's an update on hotelplanner.com. I created a sample for a 'group' scenario and here's what I got back.

One of the places that was on the list was a hotel across from LaGuardia Airport, called The Crown Plaza. It's a full scale hotel. It would be 20 minutes from Manhattan with shuttle service. It was in the vacinity of Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium and was in the price range of $149.00 for weekends to $179.00 for weekdays. I put in a random date for about a week in June.

A group deposit would be required. Probably anywhere from $500.00 to about $1,000.00. But you get it back (provided no one goes nuts and destroys things). It really depends on where you stay and some places might not charge that much. The cost of the hotel room right there would take care of your shuttle costs to and from Manhattan.

And' I saw a deal from hotelplanner that was offering a $250.00 rebate, fot this stay. Anyway, this is an example of what you can find, if you can get in on a group or get one together yourself. New York City is one of the TOP' International travels, so I don't see why you couldn't get there, with these kinds of deals.

Anyway ma man' I recoommend you do your own researching and hope some of this helps. Do you folks have frequent flier mile programs? I'm probably stupid for asking, so make sure you get in on that deal to. Just don't run up any credit cards.

I don't mind doing this. It's good information for me' to know also and a good exercise to see what I could find. I know people who travel a lot and do a bit myself. Enjoy!

Oh and how do you say 'good luck in French'? Oh yeah.........good luck in French! :)

Stay in Manhattan. Actually, stay in a hotel near Times Square, and don't venture more than, oh, five blocks from your hotel.

Don't talk to anyone, or they will steal your money. Keep your head down, and don't make eye contact with anyone. Don't eat Pizza in New York, or Italian food generally, it's terrible. However, if you must have Italian, The Olive Garden is your best bet. If you want Chinese food, I recommend getting some cans of La Choy and heating it up in the microwave back at the hotel.

Actually, it's best just to stay in your hotel room. They will probably have a good selection of movies.

Check out the Marcel Hotel - its near 23rd and 3rd.

I knew someone who stayed there a bit who said it was pretty cheap for NYC- might have been the work they were doing in the lobby last year- but it definitely seems like one of those cheap but nice places.

I also think I have seen a best western around in mid town area - either the 30's or 40's...

I guess I'll play the contrarian role in this story...

Midtown and Times Square may be indicative of "American" culture, sort of, but it sure ain't representative of the majority of NYC culture. If you want the traditional "touristy" NYC experience it works. If you want a cultural experience NYC in a way that most people who live here do, then those areas are places many here avoid. Of course, some may go to the theater, but mostly it's for those who live there (which means you are probably upper class) and/or don't mind spending significantly more for everything you can get and experience for less most elsewhere, or you work in those areas.

Times Square is almost exclusively composed of tourists and businesses catering to this audience. There are locals who go there for activities, but I think most tend to be very young because they can't go out anywhere else. It's sort of like a giant outdoor mall. Personally, I find it to be mostly flash and little substance, but I grew up and have lived here for my whole life.

Also, you don't HAVE to stay in Midtown, or even Manhattan, but yes, it's the place most tourists choose to stay. There is no guarantee you will have direct access to subways you want, and even some trains in Manhattan change schedules (i.e. disappear, skip stops) late night and on weekends. You can also stay a bit more uptown, or downtown and probably pay a bit less with relatively the same access to subways that you would find in Midtown.

In fact if you stay near 14th st. you will be on the only other street besides 42nd that has a crosstown subway (the L) and express or local trains that go uptown and down. Some younger "hip" folks like to stay near there because much of the nightlife for folks 21-45 is centered in that area East-West. 14 street touches Greenwich Village, the Meat Packing District, Union Square, which are very popular areas for somewhat younger people who live here to spend time. If you and your gf want to shop Soho, which is the real shopping center for designer clothes these days, is below 14th street, and very close. So are a lot of other popular tourist and local neighborhoods like Little Italy, Chinatown, Wall Street, WTC/Ground Zero, Battery Park, Statue of Liberty, Staten Island Ferry, Lower East Side. With the L train you can also venture into one of the "hippest" neighborhood for young adults Williamsburg, in Brooklyn (Bedford Ave).

Downtown Brooklyn actually has better access to major subways that go to both the East and West side of Manhattan, which is convenient because getting "crosstown," East to West or West to East in Manhattan is the most common, difficult, time consuming travel you will encounter no matter what time of day or where you are on the island (with the exception of the far South and far North ends).

Even staying in Jersey, right across the river is not out of the question because the Path Train goes to both lower and midtown Manhattan. This is not usually what folks chose, but I believe it costs less to stay there.

But since you have the Euro on your side this may matter less.

I like tripadvisor.com for hotel info, because it breaks down in some detail, based on user reviews, what each place might offer, cater to, etc.

Everything depends on many factors, regarding what you are looking for, etc. Not knowing exactly what you like/are interested in makes it hard to suggest too much.

Good luck getting Yankees-Red Sox tix. You'll probably have to pay a hefty surcharge because those are "premium" games, but if you're willing to shell it out I'm sure it's possible.

that's a good list Pres, but since it's the guy's 1st time in NY you don't really wannna confuse him w/all these options if u ask me... most of the tourists stay in midtown cuz that's where it's the most convenient to stay (& most congested as well obviously) & has the easiest access to most of the touristy spots, like Museum Row, Broadway, the shopping on Madison, Rockefeller Center, Madison Square Garden, Herald Square, Times Square, Central Park, Empire State Building, etc.

Union Square is an option too but that's mostly a college kids area where all the NYU & art students hang out... there's clubs in the meatpacking district but i'm sure they'd want to explore more than just hanging out at the best young bars & clubs & they can easily get down there if they jump in a cab which would take them about 2-3 minutes at most from midtown at the hours when nightlife starts to heat up... there's plenty of nice lounges, bars & clubs in midtown too for that matter... anyway most of the clubs in meatpacking are way overrated, play crappy music, tiny as hell & exclusive for no apparent reason whatsoever... just MHO.

anyway, basically if you wanna stay in Times Square then be prepared to pay a premium... as others have noted u can save a few bucks by staying at hotels more over on either the East or West sides of Manhatten also, or if u so choose downtown like Pres suggests, but personally if i were u & i were bringing my girl to the city for the 1st time, i'd just go the touristy route & opt for the convenience if u can fit that into your budget.

in any case, i'm sure you guys are gonna have an awesome time... don't be afraid of NY, it's not nearly as intimidating as people might be led to believe... just use some common sense & enjoy.
