The Commercial Appeal has learned that the Grizzlies have traded Pau Gasol to the Los Angeles Lakers for center Kwame Brown, rookie guard Javaris Crittenton and first-round draft picks in 2008 and 2010.

The decision was made that the Grizzlies could no longer move forward with Gasol on and off the basketball court.

The deal allows the Grizzlies to gain salary cap relief, as Brown is in the final year of a deal that pays $9,075,000. [READ]

GREAT deal for the Lakers! I think this makes than an elite team in the west now. Gasol/Bynum is an excellent pairing that will complement each other well.

Wow, that's all they got for Gasol? Great trade for the Lakers. If they can get back from this 9 game road trip and get Bynum back healthy, they can be a scary team come playoff time.

I guess this means Kobe will want to stay.

Unless they want to trade Bynum, which I doubt, I don't think they have enough to get Kidd. They might be able to get someone like Cassell though.

not a bad deal for memphis too, kwame expires this year, and they get essentially 3 first round picks.

they now have crittendon, lowry AND conley, and conley appears to have the starting job locked up, so hopefully they move lowry and crittendon, both are very talented, lowry especially.

Grizzlies deal star forward for salary cap relief

Also today, a Grizzlies source said that forward Stromile Swift has been traded to the New Jersey Nets for center Jason Collins.

The Grizzlies and Nets have been discussing a deal for the past week, and it is expected to be finalized on Monday.

To that end, Swift had a meeting with Griz coach Marc Iavaroni and general manager Chris Wallace Friday, was sent home and did not practice with the team. Swift will not play in Saturday's game against Utah at FedExForum.

More details as they develop.

That would be great for the lakers balance wise. Odom would be in the way as is. The problem is What the heck would NJ do with Vince, RJ and Odom. This would have to be a blockbuster mega-team deal.

I remember when the Lakers traded Shaq. I thought they would go into a tail-spin for years. They managed to be mediocre for a few years before now getting back up to that pedestal. For all the flack Kupchack has taken, he is a million times better than what we have here. Great trade for the Lakers and a solid way to unload Gasol for the rebuilding Grizzlies.
