If Shaq retires his money comes off the Heat salary cap??

I dont know how to copy, paste or all that stuff but there is an article in hoopshype that says that if Shaq retires his money comes off the Heat salary cap. Someone please go and bring this article to the forum. My big question here is why Allen Houstons money didnt come off our cap like this??

Houston didnt retire. He was injured. Big difference.

Also, when Houston left, he was still under contract. Regardless if he was playing, we still had him for a year or two left on his contract.

I think when Shaq retires, his contract is expired

Houston did officially retire due to his injuries. If Shaq's salary comes off of the cap, something doesn't add up.

he does'nt come off the cap. but i believe if it's an injury related retirement insurance covers 80percent. now i don't think that gives them cap flexability, but the owner saves some serious dough. and before someone asks, he can't just cancel his contract or anything to that effect. the nbaplayers ass. won't allow that.

As i understood it, you have to be injured and miss significant time before you can be considered retired dur to injury. In that case, lets say Shaq retired due to injury today. The earliest that would free up money for MIAMI would be in two years. So they'd save one year of cap $ on Shaq.

I believe the question is....is Shaq retiring because he just doesn't want to play, or because of injury. If it is the former, his $ comes off the cap. If it is the latter, they have to wait a bit.

That just confused me. The COX faq talks about James Worthy retiring with two years left on his deal and syaing how his money DOES still count against the cap, even if his team isn't actually paying him.

In other words, there is no shortcut to getting a guy off your cap. Only way is thru medical retirement and even then its not immediate.

Even if they chose not to pay Worthy his money, his salary would still have counted against the cap. This is not a loophole. If it were a loophole, we would've had Allan just retire instead of declare medical retirement right?

Any money paid to a player is included in team salary, even if the player has retired. For example, James Worthy retired in 1994, two years before his contract ended. He continued to receive his salary for the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons, so his salary was included in the Lakers' team salary in those seasons. It is at the team's discretion (or as the result of an agreement between the team and player) whether to continue to pay the player after he has retired.


I think the bolded parts explain this a little more clearly.

...the above relates to a non injury retirement.
we would've had Allan just retire instead of declare medical retirement right

I don't think Allan would have accepted not getting paid.
