Kiki Vandeweghe is heading to the New Jersey Nets in a management role to assist team president and general manager Rod Thorn, a source told ESPN on Monday.

Vandeweghe will essentially replace Ed Stefanski, who left the Nets to join the Philadelphia 76ers earlier this month. Stefanski replaced Billy King as the 76ers general manager.

A formal announcement is expected Monday afternoon.

meh, I never liked him as a potential Isiah replacement anyway. overall his tenure in Denver isn't really all that impressive.

he took a capped out crappy team and made them a perennial playoff team. he made some mistakes but he still turned the franchise around. he's a HUGE upgrade from isiah.

Well that's true, but... eh.... I think I like Rick Sund better as a replacement. Either him or steve patterson. Even though it was kind of jerkish for him to resign on the Blazers the way he did just cuase his contract wasn't extended, he was the guy who spearheaded the whole stop paying for overpaid garbage philosophy that the blazers are using right now.

it's a removal of an option. we don't know who would want to come to ny and work for dolan. now there's one less choice.

There are a number of guys I would be interested in. This is a reclimation project so we need a reclimation specialist. We need patience and a guy who is very good with the media has NBA experience can handle NY understands talent etc.. the more I think about it--one name comes to my --John Calipari. He was overruled trying to draft Kobe and if he was able to draft him--he would have never been out of the nBA. He's turned around two lost programs in college but wasnt given 100% authority with the Nets in player personell and that is what the GM needs.

tru dat! tru dat!

Well what could we expect? We know that Dolan is an idiot who will give Isiah more time than he deserves so, there's not much we can do except that hope that some good candidates are available when we need them to be. At the way things are going it's looking like Isiah will be here to waste our lives as Knick fans for the duration of the season. Hopefully he gets fired no later than that, and hopefully there are still some candidates available that will be willing to rebuild the team intelligently at that time.

calipari is an interesting choice. he got some moxy, loves the camera, and is good with the press.

but can he remain a gm without getting involved with the coaching? he's a coach 1st and foremost and i don't know if he can stay away from the tunnel like isiah...

Technically even Glen Grunwald would be an upgrade over Isiah. Even though they were never a championship team at least he was able to build the Raptors into a playoff team, which is more than Isiah has ever done. But I think we can, and should look to, do better then Grunwald. I don't really know much about Calipri's Nets tenure or College tenure though, but him wanting to draft Kobe at least means that he's a competent drafter.

And of course there's also the option of getting a Vice President from another team but I'm not sure if that's the best way to go.

Calipari would relish the opportunity to dump Marbury.

Calipari is a defense-minded coach. I thinkt he role of GM is better suited to his talents i.e media talent evaluation handling NY etc.. and pairing him with a young coach who specilizes in defense--my pick would be Tom Thibadeu[im sure that is spelled wrong] Calipari as GM Thibadeu as coach--we will be better quicker.

Calapari would get all his ex players to come play for him

JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

Wasn't Thibadeu one of the Knick assistants who resigned after Van Gundy left? That would put him on Dolan's naughty list. Tom is deserving of a shot I just don't see Dolan giving it to him.

Kiki's only claim to fame is that he drafted Melo and that wasn't a hard choice.

Kiki = overrated.

There was a lot Kiki did wrong in his tenure. Getting under the caps and getting picks was the right moves, but I don't think he always did a great job in his talent eval. That being said, an apprenticeship under Thorn should do wonders for him in the long run. He has the tools to be a very effective executive and this is a good job for him.

I still think we need an old school personnel. I'd normally say one of these hot shot young guys that understand the statistical bent a little bit more and team building strategy would be awesome too- I mean the kind of guys that Portland and Seattle have hired. But I also think the GM here needs to do serious PR and is under so many different constraints that it really needs to be an old school NBA guy with a strong personality, like a Walsh or Colangelo.

Briggs brings up an interesting candidate in Calipari who brings a big name , rep and personality as well. He has always been one to find talent through different channels and he's the right type of guy to come here.

Disappointing. Kiki would've been a nice fit here.

What about the fact that he traded an injured Antonio McDyess and got Camby and Nene for him? That wasn't impressive?

i don't think kiki was great, but a team of dre miller, melo, kmart and camby...that's not bad.

if the objective is to build via the draft, then kiki is not your guy.

but under dolan, i don't think that's an option. so if a guy has to come in, work under dolan, and re-shape the roster on the fly, then kiki is a solid choice b/c that's pretty much what he did in denver.

Looking at a GM's track record per say as projecting is kind of silly in my opinion. The GM represnts the owners spending and the kind of team they want.

Kiki took a bloated team and dumped contracts. All Gm's make blunders and he did his share. Especially passing on Amare TWICE and picking Skita, but it happens and the bottom line is Denver is a good team based on his groundwork.

If KMart came back big that would have been a good gamble.

I also think GM's if young and bright can learn from experience and become better over time. Thorn is a great presence and that combo can perhaps be very intellegent.

What is it that Thorn wants to do?? Rebuild? Rebuild on the fly? Trade off Carter and KIdd? Build thru draft?

A plan, an execution, and a budget are what you work with.

Regarding the Knicks, until those three things are in place you can fire Isiah and still have a disaster until you have a direction with a new GM.

Grunwald might prove to be the greatest GM if you get a plan and stick to it. The circumstances going forward are always differnt that what was done in the past.

I can site one instance where an exec got worse with experience. Isiah.
