Knicks' Marbury plans to return to team after new year
By Andrew Marchand
Special to ESPN.com

New York Knicks guard Stephon Marbury informed the team on Thursday that he plans on returning to the team after the new year, according to Knicks' vice president of communications Jonathan Supranowitz.

Supranowitz spoke with Marbury after Knicks coach Isiah Thomas said at practice earlier on Thursday that he did not know if Marbury would return to the team.

"He has not given anyone in our organization any indication that he will not be back," Supranowitz said.

Thomas' confidence in Marbury's return to the team this season appeared to be waning earlier in the day. During Thursday's media availability at practice, Thomas was asked if Marbury will return to the Knicks at all this season.

"I don't know," Thomas said.

A little more than 24 hours ago at the Knicks morning shootaround in Orlando, Thomas said the Knicks are "expecting Marbury back at some point in time this year."

Marbury has missed eight of the Knicks' last 12 games as he grieves the death of his father, Don. Thomas and the Knicks have given Marbury as much time as he needs.

"Our organization speaks with him daily," Thomas said. "It is very safe to say he is having a very difficult time with this."

Thomas says that Marbury has permission to not be with the team. That differs from a situation earlier this season, when Marbury left the Knicks before a game at Phoenix, reportedly after he confronted Thomas over his demotion from the starting lineup.

The Knicks and Marbury still disagree over whether Thomas gave Marbury permission to leave the team. That move cost Marbury nearly $200,000 in fines, a decision Marbury is appealing. On Wednesday, Thomas said the Knicks would not reconsider the fine.

He probably has a big new years bash to throw.
I want to leave something that's going to stand for a long timeI want to leave a legacy,I want to leave tradition.I want to leave an imprint,a blueprint in terms of how people play, and how they coach and how they respond when they put on the Knick uni.

Maybe he thinks since it's the new year, he can convince Isiah and Dolan that they should remove the fine since it happened last year.

some Knick fans accept mediocrity as excellence .... I don't!

In the scheme of things it doesn't matter when or if he comes back.

Seriously, does he get paid for the time he missed?
How many games was it? Like 10? What's that, $2.5MM?

btw, hit a mall in northern NJ tonight.

Starbury's kicks at steve and barry's are knocked down to $8.98. Now it was a storewide sale of everything at that price or below, but the starbury line doesn't appear to carry the premium it used to. with "the movement" headed up by steph and big ben, both floundering in the league, i can't help but wonder if "the movement" will be moving out.

but here's the real kicker... i went to two different modell's sporting goods stores this week, and neither carried ANY knicks apparel. no caps and no jerseys. you've got your wade, lebron, kidd and carter jerseys, but nothing for the knicks. 20 miles from madison square garden and there is not one piece of knicks paraphernalia in either store. not even a sweat band. NOTHING!!!

it's as if the stores are afraid to be associated with them.

It wouldn't surprise me if I picked up the paper sometime next year and read that Steve and Barry filed for bankruptcy.

Poor Steve and Barry. 2 idiots for associating themselves with Stephon Marbury.

One just opened up where I live and I don't expect it to be around long. Cats down at the barbershop I get my hair cut at have no idea what's up with the Knicks or if Marbury is even playing. They talk about the Blazers, Celtics, and Hornets and even struggling teams like Chicago, Heat, New Jersey.

lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

I dont know what was more annoying, thinking Mabury us back or thinking TrueBlue is back.
